Watch For These 2 Setup Changes In Pro Bags This Week At The Masters

If you want to know what matters at Augusta National Golf Club, don’t just watch the swings. Look at what’s in the bag.

Every year, a couple of subtle setup changes start to show up as players prepare. They’re not about chasing distance or testing new gear. They’re about controlling trajectory into firm, sloped greens.

Two adjustments, in particular, stand out.

Higher-lofted, low-bounce lob wedges

Around Augusta’s greens, versatility matters more than anything. Tight lies, shaved runoff areas and elevated greens force players to hit a variety of shots with the same club. If you’re short-sided with very little grass to work with, a higher-lofted lob wedge with lower bounce can help.

The added loft helps launch the ball higher while the lower bounce allows the club to slide under the ball cleanly on tight turf. The result is exactly what players need at Augusta: height, spin and the ability to stop the ball quickly.

A good example is Rory McIlroy’s lob wedge setup when he won in 2025. His 60-degree wedge was bent to 61 and featured low bounce (60-08LB @61), giving him the ability to hit high, soft shots from a variety of lies without the club bouncing into the ball. It worked.

Higher-lofted fairway woods for approach control

At the other end of the bag, the same theme shows up.

Augusta’s par-5s, especially 13 and 15, reward players who can hit high, controlled approach shots that land softly. That’s not always easy with a long iron or even a standard fairway wood.

That’s where higher-lofted fairway woods come into play.

With more loft, players can:

• Launch the ball higher
• Create a steeper descent angle
• Hold firm greens from long range

Some players take it further by adding a 7-wood or 9-wood. For example, Tommy Fleetwood has kept a 9-wood in the bag all season and there’s no reason to change that this week. It gives him a reliable option to hit towering shots that land softly.

Others stick with a more traditional setup. Even in his win, McIlroy’s highest-lofted fairway wood was just a 5-wood and in 2024 Scottie Scheffler’s highest-lofted fairway wood was the 3-wood.

There’s no single “right” way to build a bag for Augusta. But if you look closely, the theme is usually to hit it higher, land it softer.
