We Asked Golfers For The Best Place To Buy Used Clubs. Here’s What They Said

I’m a thrifty fella so I’ve have always been intrigued by the used club market.

But there are so many options, so many sites, so many promises. How can one sift through the myriad of marketing to find the best place to buy used clubs?

Like many of you, I’ve wondered if buying from somewhere like 2nd Swing or Global Golf is really a better value. So I asked real golfers to weigh in on their experiences with used club shopping.

One retailer dominated the results. Can you guess which?

Let’s dive into the data.

Where do you buy used clubs from most often?

It’s plain to see that golfers mainly are purchasing used golf clubs from two retailers, 2nd Swing and eBay. (This aligns with my personal preferences, although they have no bearing here.)

It’s interesting to note that those two alone make up nearly half of the overall data.

Key findings

Besides asking golfers for their preferred used club destination, we also asked for qualitative feedback as to why they chose that particular retailer or site. This led to some very interesting data points, including the following.

#1: 2nd Swing is the most trusted place to buy used golf clubs

Based on the data from our survey, respondents named 2nd Swing as the most trusted/reputable place to buy used clubs. This same sentiment was echoed in regards to customer service, where 2nd Swing also beat out the rest of the competition.

#2: eBay has the best prices and provides the most value

Of the 13-plus retailers, eBay was mentioned the most when it comes to price and value. This was the No. 1 reason those who took the survey bought from eBay over any other used club retailer.

#3: 2nd Swing has the best selection

While eBay might take home the crown of best prices, 2nd Swing was picked as having the best selection of products. A quick scroll through 2nd Swing’s site (or a stroll through any of their retail locations) makes this very apparent and the survey respondents surely felt the same.

I have had good success with both 2nd Swing and Global Golf, and would highly recommend either.

2nd Swing for the win. I paid $50 apiece for 6 PXG 0311XF forged irons w/ graphite shafts. These clubs originally retailed for $350 apiece! They were listed as “very good” condition. When I received them, it was obvious the condition was “like new”. All other aspects of the transaction (packaging, shipping) were flawless.

I have bought clubs over the years from Ebay and 2nd Swing. I used to love going into 2nd Swing stores in Minneapolis when I went there on business but retired now. Still buying from both of the 2 most popular sites. I will not buy from Global Golf because they do not show actual pictures of the clubs. I don’t want to be buying and returning. Ebay is the best for me but selling with them is very expensive.

It helps to know what you need & what you should be looking for & Ive used My Golf spy for years now to identify great not good 3-4 year old clubs. I never buy new clubs why pay double? But I’ve been measured & fitted & tinkered for 40 years now still use lead tape now & then on a wedge.
Best prices are local sales – here in San Diego club manufacturing produces some pockets of really good stuff cheap. As a young man I played tour prototypes that didn’t make the cut occasionally bought cheaply from individuals. Employees can buy a limited amount of merchandise I have some friends in that category. Bargain barrels at local shops are great for single wedges & hybrids. But EBay still has the best selection. If I don’t love a club I relist it but I’ve got grandkids & other beginning golfers I’ll help too.

Recently purchased a duplicate set to keep at my son’s house. New stiff Graphite Design driver shaft for an old X stiff Ping G of mine, Tour exotics 3 wood & hybrid GD shafts, my same Mizuno older forged irons all from eBay, wedges from local shops barrels & an old Rife putter from the garage. I reclaimed a bag from a son in law & added a glove, balls, my 3rd best golf shoes – total cost for complete bag under $450.

2nd Swing has better selection. Sometimes Van’s, once in a while PGA TOUR Superstore. You can try the clubs out. eBay worries me because there is so much counterfeit clubs out there. I don’t trust individual sales on eBay. Sorry, not sorry. Used clubs are great if you get fit for them.

2nd Swing is pretty great in my experience, but so is Mike’s Golf Outlet (https://www.mikesgolfoutlet.com/). MGO is the best place to go if you’re looking for clubheads only. I originally discovered them on eBay, but I’ve also gotten good deals buying directly from their website.

I’ve bought a couple drivers and a putter from Callaway Pre-Owned “like new”. Can’t much tell the difference from “definitely new.” No complaints, and their customer service is good.

If you know what you’re looking for, you can obtain the best deal on eBay. However, looking carefully at photos and trusting in the seller’s rating is important.

Actually estate sales near country clubs. A little morbid but some of those guys had tons of clubs. Other than that E-Bay if you are careful to shop.

I lived in the 2nd swing store near Chicago for 2-3 hours every week during the season 20 years ago before that store closed. I have purchased a couple of sets of irons in Mint condition from 2nd Swing and was very pleased. They are usually a couple years old but mint is brand new with irons still in the wrappers. The store is Disneyland for a hacker like me. Right now there is a set of XXIO 2022 X irons, graphite shafts in mint condition for under $400. For an old guy like me, 72 and a 12 HCP, that’s a pretty good deal.

When I’ve looked at Second Swing I thought they were overpriced, I believe it was SS that sold a counterfeit Scotty Cameron and when they found out they checked their inventory and found they had bought several counterfeit Scotties. I know that can happen to anyone now as they even hijack legitimate serial numbers

Used clubs are priced way too high and are a rip off. Just buy new you’re much better off.

Gotta say that 2nd Swing is very good, but my “go to” is Global Golf (which is, I believe part of the WorldWide Golf Group. My experiences with GG are that the equipment is priced competitively (and sometimes even better), Customer Service is great, and shipping time (at least to Florida where I live0 is speedy! I know some folks just point and pay as soon as they find something they like, but I like to check all of the sites and work off that info. Global Golf more often than not ends up with my money and I end up happy with my purchases…which are many if you ask my wife!

If someone has bought from most in the pie chart, does that mean they have a club buying problem? Asking for a friend . . .

2nd swing is great, so is Callaway Preowned and I have bought some used clubs from PGATSS when I find something I want in the store near me. I wish there was a 2nd swing in Colorado as I could probably spend hours perusing the used clubs there.

I’ve been a 2nd Swing customer and fan since the 1990’s (before their contraction and reexpansion). They simply cannot be beat in terms of trade in value, selection of used clubs and their airplane hanger sized candy stores in Scottsdale, Dallas, DE, Md, and Minnesota. A bonus is free fitting with purchase of even used sets and 30 day “playability” return/exchange guarantee). Their YouTube video reviews are a huge help in starting a used or new club search. They also have rare putters and head covers for sale. Enough said, the numbers show the public agrees with me ! I’ve dabbled on e-bay but you can get surprised and burned–be careful.

Used to be 3balls.com but then they sold it to Global Golf and it’s never been the same. They had good values too. I find 2nd Swing to be pretty high priced for used clubs. I’ve had better luck buying used clubs from ebay or locally at Joe and Leighs instead. Golf club prices have gotten too expensive so finding a used option is often the better option.

What I love most about 2nd Swing is just how accessible they are for trying things out. If I just want to try out a few wedges for 10 minutes, come back with a pair of woods, then try a driver with specific shaft out, I can without hassle or some snooty kid who looks down on us “hackers”

100% agree. I went to 2nd Swing in Columbia, MD several years ago to upgrade my driver. Booked a bay with a fitter and got there and first thing they did was optimize the TM RocketBLZ I was gaming. Then tried several different used drivers and non beat my TM so stuck with it. They didn’t charge me for the bay. Have been loyal customer ever since.
Used Global Golf back in early aughts as I got numerous good deals from them. They were great at under promising and over delivering. Bought a couple drivers that were rated “very good” and both came with plastic still on heads.
Debating now whether to go full fitting for new clubs or just continue using 2nd Swing and upgrading with 2 to 3 year old clubs.
