You put your 3-wood on a short tee and send it down the middle. Two holes later, you have the same club from a clean fairway lie and produce a low, thin shot that barely gets airborne.
It feels like two different swings. Usually, it is not.
The tee gives you something the fairway does not: vertical room for error. With the ball elevated, the clubhead can arrive a little higher or lower than intended and still find the face. From the turf, the bottom of the swing and strike height must match much more closely.
That is why the fix should begin with contact, not another swing thought.
The tee may be hiding your contact pattern
A 3-wood struck from a tee can produce a good shot even when the club bottoms out slightly behind the ball. The clubhead has room to pass through the strike without first colliding with the ground.
Move that delivery to the fairway and the result changes. If the swing bottoms out too early, the club hits turf first. If you react by standing up or trying to lift the ball, contact moves low on the face and the shot comes out thin or topped.
You do not need to drive the club sharply down like a short iron. A fairway wood still favors a relatively shallow delivery. However, the club must reach the ball before the turf, with the brush point beginning at the ball or just beyond it. Learning to control where your swing bottoms out is the first priority.
Make sure your fairway setup is not a tee setup
Many golfers make their fairway wood setup look too much like their driver setup. The ball creeps toward the lead heel, the stance gets wide and the upper body leans away from the target. From the ground, that can move the swing’s low point behind the ball.
Use these starting checkpoints:
- Play the ball forward but not as far forward as you would with a driver. One or two ball widths inside the lead heel is a reasonable starting point.
- Narrow the stance slightly compared with your driver stance.
- Feel your pressure centered or slightly favoring the lead foot.
- Keep your chest from drifting behind the ball as you try to create launch.
The objective is a shallow strike without hanging back.
Let the miss choose the correction
Do not treat every poor fairway wood shot as the same problem.
A heavy strike usually means the club reached the ground too early. A topped shot can indicate that the swing’s low point moved upward or that you backed away from the ball. A low bullet may come from contact low on the face even when the face and path are functional.

The correction should match the evidence. Do not move the ball back because one shot was thin or force your weight forward because one was fat.
Use a tee-height ladder
The jump from a comfortable tee shot to a ball sitting on the ground can be too abrupt. Make the transition gradually.
Begin with the ball on a low tee. Hit three shots to the same target at about three-quarter speed. When two produce solid contact and a playable flight, lower the tee until the ball is barely above the grass.
Hit three more. Then remove the tee and place the ball just ahead of a chalk line or painted range line. Your goal is to contact the ball and brush the turf at the line or slightly beyond it.
If contact disappears at one stage, move back up rather than pounding poor shots from the turf. The drill preserves the motion while gradually removing the tee’s assistance.
Decide whether the shot and club fit
A clean fairway lie does not automatically make 3-wood the right choice. Tight or wet turf, an uneven stance or a ball sitting slightly down can make contact less predictable.
Before pulling the club, ask whether enough of the ball is exposed, whether your normal strike carries the trouble and what a slightly heavy or thin miss will cost. A higher-lofted fairway wood, hybrid or layup club may produce a better scoring result.
Some golfers discover that their 3-wood is a reliable alternative to driver but not their best club from the ground. That is useful information, not failure.
