Wilson Dxi Superlight – Details

Pop quiz time:  What job did Bob Mendralla have at the Wilson Golf before becoming their “Master Clubmaker” for the next fifty years? FLOOR SWEEPER.  Talk about working your way up the ladder.

In This Corner…Weighing In At 270 grams….

The 2012 Wilson Staff DXi Superlight driver!  Wilson has combined two of the more popular recent trends (lightweight driver tech + stealth black finish) into this new design.  This ultra-light will be the lightest driver Wilson Golf has ever produced…weighing in at 270 grams total.  It has a D2 swingweight and will be 46 inches long. It will also have the thinnest crown they have ever produced.  It will incorporate something new that they are calling the “Wilson 5-zone Face Technology“.  Which basically means it allowed them to save some weight and at the same time expand the sweet spot.

This new Wilson weapon will be equipped with the Matrix Ozik shaft and the WinnLite grips which saved an additional 24 grams.

The bold sole graphics are a little Blue-Light-Special-ish including all the deep, wide grooves on the face. Ghost the crest on the face. Tone it down and make it a little more ProStaff Tour worthy. And when will one of the makers bring out a flat black top and bright face. If you think Aesthetics are important, make the club look like a serious club instead of a Blinged-up, Big-5 weekend special. But I am anxious to give it a try. I have always played Wilson irons. And if the driver performs, you can put Sponge Bob on it for all I care, I know how to use a can of spray paint.

I love my current DXi driver and will definitely give the new DXi Superlight a go. Tried a friends Taylormade Superfast with this shaft and loved it. I’m a huge Wilson Staff fan. My bag is full. FG Tour irons & wedges, DXi woods & hybrid and a Vizor putter. Since changing to Wilson Staff I have had my best and most consistant year ever. Can’t wait to try it!

It would be great if Wislon provided an opportunity to demo this longer term. Not just a “demo day,” but a loan out to hacks like me who love & use their equipment.

Aside from the “Superlight” graphic on the bottom, I think it’s a very nice looking club and the 450cc head is a step in the right direction. I really like the Wilson crest on the face.
If the club delivers better distance and accuracy than the Smooth and doesn’t sound like a tin can like the Spine, I’ll take a look. Bought both of those and neither excelled. The Smooth wasn’t particularly long and the stock shaft didn’t like me. The Spine was very long, but sounded awful and mishits were brutal and unforgiving. I like where the DXi line is going, but the Superlight graphic needs to be in 10 pt type and much less pronounced. Classy beats flashy every time. Gaming the Cobra ZL at the moment, which is fairly long and far easier to find fairways with.

The driver looks good and I am sure will perform well but it needs to be lower priced to have any chance of selling. The major brands, Taylormade, Callaway, Ping, will be fighting over that $300 price point and secondary brands, Wilson, Cobra, Adams,Nike, etc., need to get lower to be able to generate any significant sales. Sorry if this rains on their parade but it is reality.

Price means nothing if the technology really works. A better mousetrap always stimulates sales. Consumers will stand in line to purchase…..if it simply works.

But, this tech is old. I worked for Ram with the Featherlites…after 6 months…dead issue! The only one that got it right was Stevie Dunn..his Pennyweights sold nicely for a couple more years after the rest of companies ‘bailed’. Revisited tech hardly ever works out..no matter who introduces it.

What does the headcover look like? That’s what we’ll see over Paddy’s and Ricky’s R11 or Razr or whatever else they decide to play….

For all those that think the LOGO on the face is a turn off. If I saw an imprint on my golf ball in the center of the fairway a long way from the tee, I might be glad it was there. Otherwise if you can see it while you are addressing the ball or swinging, you need more than a swing coach.:)

the whole thing looks cheap–how sad that Wilson, the maker of my beloved 1967 Staff Blades (the first clubs I ever shot a sub-par round with) has sunk to this level.

I’m 71 years old and an old “Wilson” believer. A “D0 swing-weight” is great for my swing. I just bought Adams 9088 UL, it helped me reach the par 5’s in 3. Will not hesitate to buy another driver with a swig-weight of D0

BTW, I notice a general concensus that all the comments are on cosmetics. That is NOT what they are selling…interesting that essentially no one commented on the main selling feature? Therefore, I must assume that most buyers are concerned with cosmetics rather than technology…kinda’ weird for a hardcore bunch.

Hardorcore doesnt just equal “buy what the manufacturer is trying to shove down your throat”…i.e., light driver…asthetics falls under the scope as well. Bottom of this thing looks like a billboard.

I agree that technology is important, but the fact of the matter is that this brings nothing new to the table that deserves addressing. Seriously–light driver technology is a mixed bag.
The first series of Cleveland 270’s were 3 star clubs at best, but the next year–the shaft match was so much better that they could easily be 4 1/2 star clubs.I find the Ozik Shafts to be a mixed bag as well. I found them to be more consistent when they went under the Apache name. So basically addressing techno issues without swinging this one is a real shot in the dark.
As Zappa would ask, “Is that a real Ozik…or a Sears Ozik?” With all that in mind–cosmetics are all I can address with any real sense of credibility.

The superlite Driver phrase is OVER! Integra Golf introduced the 175 gram head (last year) and for X amount of months the sell thru was quite good. Once the Honeymoon was over it went on Dead Stop. Same with the Featherlites in the early 80’s…that ship has sailed long ago. It may be good for Seniors an Women but for the general populace…the party is over! Watch this puppy sink an already Titanic type company.

Bottom of the club looks Krank Golf. Wilson should stick with irons. Oh and how about just a little more text on the bottom of the club,,e.g. the Ricky Barnes or Paddy Harrington model

I the crest should be at the top, to point the directions of the ball. They should make the white line on the face a little thinner. Instead of the glossy finish at the bottom, they should make it a matte finish, to make it last longer and less scratchy. The letters are just too big. Keep it small. I don’t know about the letter colors, just seems out of place. I’m pretty sure that they want it to stand out, need to keep it…I don’t know.

I am intrigued by this one. My old Dd6 Driver was the most accurate driver I’ve ever owned. If Wilson Staff really picks it up a notch in the distance department, and this club is as accurate as my old Dd6, I would probably end up buying it. I agree that the bottom lettering is a bit Garish, but I love the Staff Symbol on the face and the alignment mark. I really like the understated look of my old Dd6, and I love the understated look of my Ci9 Irons. Even so–if this thing hits it a ton, and holds the line, I could be convinced to live with the lettering on the sole.

Take a page out of the HP book and sell them for $99 and they will sell millions in this economy. You learn just how bad the price points on new clubs are when you try to trade-in a $400 driver and are offered $78 as the best offer from the PGA Value Guide.

I think it is a great looking driver. Nice proportion nothing way out there. I would definitely give a try. I think Wilson is making a solid line of clubs all they need a couple more big time players carrying their bag to get people interested in what they are offering.

Sad to see drivers looking like Nascar Race Cars.

I like my 9015d Adams simply because well, besides the sole there no graphics and useless decorations. Clean look at address, deep face and shallower topline. Perfect.

That giant SUPERLIGHT kills a very good looking driver IMO should be smaller and above the DXi the lines on the face would look really slick if they ghosted them in so they dont stand out so much. Other then that looks sweet from the top, do you know if it will come in a tour version with a less closed face?

Very nice look, a little overkill on the wording, but I like the idea of 450 and being light, super huge faces tend to make folks forget how to hit a club.

Get rid of the logo on the face! Topside looks really good. Bottom side, big bold white letters look cheap and the loft should be hidden. Red, black and white combo doesn’t work, try red back and grey maybe…

I like the looks from the crown and face shots but I would have to agree with Mr. Jacobs’ comments on the graphics. Total buzzkill. I know they don’t affect the performance but they just look so Costco, low rent import that if I hit the club and liked it I would have to spend the time to tastefully blackout everything on the bottom except 9* and Wilson Staff. Wilson Staff should the largest font on the club and everything else smaller. Much smaller. However, I like the face graphic. I grew up playing Wilsons and would love to see them stay a viable brand with a bit more respect.

For me the most important part is the crown, the face and the sound. The face could be a bit deeper and the head a bit “narrower”, but then again this driver class is not for me. The SUPERLIGHT could have a smaller font, cause it makes the driver look cheap – the same with DXI. What happened with the Pd line?

Great to see Staff getting back into the game…grew up on the FG17s…none better, ever…Nice looking driver with the exception of the face…Don’t like the line design & forget the logo center face…too busy…Why is it that when these designers see empty space on a club, they feel an uncontrollable urge to put something there?..Look @ the timeless, classic designs of the past or Mizuno or Fourteen w/their current designs…Less is elegent & classic, more just cheapens the look…In my humble opinion…Forged4ever….
