Tony Finau WITB: Mostly Predictable—With One Notable Outlier

Tony Finau is well liked, family first and rarely chases attention. He’s quietly become one of my favorite players over the years. Finau’s bag evolves slowly and deliberately and while most of it follows a familiar pattern, there’s one club that stands out simply because it never leaves.

Below is Tony Finau’s current setup.

The driver changes, the setup doesn’t

Finau moves forward with PING’s LST line as new models are released but the setup philosophy stays locked in.

His current G440 LST is played with significantly reduced loft, around 7.1 degrees, paired with a Ventus Black Velo+ shaft profile designed to keep launch and spin under control at high speed.

The one club that never leaves

The Nike Vapor Fly Pro 3-iron has survived multiple iron cycles, multiple bag refreshes and years of Tour equipment turnover. That alone tells you it fills a role that nothing else has replaced.

In a WITB video, Finau recently said this about the NIKE Vapor Fly Pro 3-iron: “My trusty driving 3-iron. I’ve been hitting this for 10 years which in golf club years is about 80 years old. I’ve hit more fairways with this than any other club in my bag. For that reason, it’s just my favorite club.”

Whether it’s launch, gapping or a specific flight Finau relies on, this club continues to earn its spot.

The putter evolves quietly

For years, Finau stuck with a PING PLD Anser prototype, resisting the move many players made toward larger mallet-style putters.

The switch to the PLD Custom Ally Blue Onset 5 marks his first real move away from that pattern. It offers more stability than his previous blade without abandoning the clean look he prefers.

Final thought

Tony Finau keeps one of the most consistent golf bags on the PGA Tour. The putter change in the summer of 2025 was a big one for him. The real story will be when (if?) that NIKE Vapor Fly comes out and what it is replaced with.

I know there are a couple of other pros who keep those Nike irons in the bag. I wasn’t playing golf at the time, but they must have been onto something.

I’m frankly surprised that someone involved in the development of those hasn’t replicated it elsewhere. There must be one hell of an NDA covering those things…
