Spy Kicks: The Best Golf Shoes at the BMW Championship

The Best Golf Shoes at the BMW Championship

As the field continues to shrink, so do my options for the best golf shoes of the week. And to avoid sounding like a broken record, I wanted to switch it up and show some love to some of the underdogs—those whose shoes have gone largely unnoticed.

I’m constantly reminding myself that what’s cool to me may not be cool to you. Not everyone salivates over NIKE or Jordan Brand golf kicks the way I do. With that said, here are some of the best (and most under-appreciated) golf shoes I saw at the BMW Championship.

Sepp Straka in Sqairz Golf Shoes

Sepp Straka in Sqairz Golf Shoes

Sepp Straka has been one of the few Tour pros to sign a shoe deal with Sqairz. Alongside names like Nick Faldo and John Daly, Straka has quietly been giving the people at Sqairz a lot to be excited about. His lone Tour win in February came while wearing the Sqairz Speed but the model he’s been wearing recently doesn’t look like any I’ve seen before.

We can’t move on without mentioning that since their inception, Sqairz has been a great tester for us here at MyGolfSpy. The Sqairz Speed was crowned the most stable golf shoe in our 2022 spiked golf shoe testing.

I’m sure some of you are much more familiar with Sqairz than I am. If you’ve worn a pair, love your pair or have any experience with the brand at all, feel free to leave me a comment. I’m genuinely curious about your experience.

Hideki Matsuyama in the ASICS GEL-ACE PRO M STANDARD

Hideki in ASICS GEL-ACE PRO M STANDARD

Hideki Matsuyama has always done things a little differently and that includes his golf shoe selection. The 2021 Masters champion wears the ASICS GEL-ACE PRO M STANDARD, a little-known performance golf shoe from the Japanese running shoe giant.

ASICS isn’t new to the golf scene but their footprint in North America is still fairly fresh. The GEL-ACE PRO M STANDARD happens to be ASICS’ first real Tour offering with traditional styling and spiked tooling.

And unless you’ve played with me (which I know you haven’t), the chances of you seeing a pair of these in the wild is slim to none. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give these a go. If you’re a fan of ANY of ASICS running shoes, you’re going to get along with the ASICS GEL-ACE PRO M STANDARD just fine.

Scottie Scheffler in the NIKE Air Zoom Tiger Woods ’20

Scottie Scheffler in Nike Air Zoom Tiger Woods '20

If Tiger Woods isn’t wearing his own shoe, someone’s got to do it, right?

The NIKE Air Zoom Tiger Woods ’20 has been world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler’s choice of golf shoe for this year. Interestingly, Scheffler had been wearing the NIKE Air Zoom Victory Tour 2 in last year’s Tour Championship.

You wonder that if NIKE had introduced a new version of the TW signature shoe, would Scheffler have switched but something tells me he’s content with what he’s got. If you remember, Scheffler was still using an old NIKE fairway wood up until he signed his recent deal with TaylorMade. And it recently came out that he still drives the same Chevy Suburban he had in college.

It’s safe to say Scheffler sticks with what he knows and that’s OK with me.

Tyrrell Hatton in the original adidas CODECHAOS

Tyrrell Hatton in the adidas CODECHAOS

Do you buy new golf shoes every year or are you still rocking a pair from a few years ago? If you’re in the latter group (I’m definitely not), then Tyrrell Hatton is right there with you.

Hatton is still wearing the original adidas CODECHAOS shoes from 2020. Even though adidas has released not one but two new iterations of the CODECHAOS since then, Hatton is content to stay with what he knows works.

Maybe Hatton has been reading MyGolfSpy content and knows the adidas CODECHAOS took home the title of the best spikeless golf shoe of 2020. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the newer models are any worse or better but it’s not something we can just disregard.

Obviously, adidas nailed it with the first version of the CODECHAOS and Hatton is proof of that.

Mito Pereira in the Under Armour HOVR Drive 2

Mito Pereira in the Under Armour HOVR Drive 2

PGA TOUR rookie Mito Pereira was seen in the Under Armour HOVR Drive 2. Similar to ASICS or Sqairz, you don’t see a lot of Tour pros wearing Under Armour golf shoes.

Yeah, yeah, I know Spieth does but he has his own Under Armour shoe. The HOVR Drive 2 is the Baltimore sportswear brand’s Tour offering for the masses. Despite the original HOVR Drive taking the top spot in our 2021 spiked golf shoe testing, the HOVR Drive 2 finished towards the bottom of the pack in our 2022 spiked golf shoe performance test.

BUY Under Armour HOVR Drive 2

Showing Love to the Little Guys

Have you tried any of the golf shoes on my list? Drop a comment below and let me know. Often the shoes we tend to overlook turn out to be hidden performance gems.

If you’re stubborn like me and unwilling to give some of the smaller brands a try, I suggest you put aside your ego and give them a go. We can do it together, OK? All jokes aside, golf is about wearing what you want. Don’t let anyone give you grief for your golf shoe. Enjoy what you wear and you’ll enjoy the game that much more!

It’s all about the true shoes. All these major companies have a narrow trash toe box. You can get a quad E shoe but their still gonna give you bunions. Can’t believe true is the only company that has separated itself in this area

I wore mine for the first time Friday. I rode in a cart and my feet hurt for days. I need to get an insert with a higher arch support. Thankfully I wasn’t walking or it would have been worse.

I am a huge fan of SQAIRZ, as they are the most comfortable golf shoe I have ever worn. I have a lot of foot problems and pain, and these shoes have really helped solve my problem. I also like the look, as they help my line up properly on both my full swing and putts. I will not be wearing any other golf shoes going forward.

Been wearing SQUAIRZ since December as I needed more support for a left ankle issue.. They have a solid feel and a very comfortable toe box. Once the heat subsides in Phoenix I’ll be back walking more courses. They are especially good on courses with short steep hills around the green complexes as my round at the Boulders would attest. I plan to get the mesh version next as soon as I can get some skins in my mens’ club events !

I buy a new pair of adidas codechaos every year: the most comfortable spineless show with the most traction/stability I’ve ever tried. If I’m walking a round, I’m wearing these. If I’m riding, probably Footjoy Prol SL carbon.

As a disabled golfer who has problems bending and to tie my shoes I found Skechers Go Golf Torque Twist. There’s a twist wheel that tightens and loosens the nylon laces so the shoes are snug and like most Skechers, comfortable, soft, yet supportive.

After wearing alternating 2 Ecco pairs of shoes (which I love and still have) for years, I got a pair of Adidas CodeChoas which I also love. I then saw the FJ Traditions. First got the black shoe/black saddle and found these to be the lightest feeling, most stable and best fitting shoe I’ve worn, and they are a great price. Took me 2 rounds to get the white and blue Traditions. Love the look, fit is best ever, very stable, and make me remember playing with my dad. Traditions for life!

I have worn the ASICS. An extremely comfortable shoe. Right now I wear Athalonz. What a great shoe! Comfortable and durable. Only complaint is if it is dewy or wet out they tend to slip in the grass.

I have tried numerous different golf shoes in the past looking for the “perfect” fit. I recently purhssed a pair of Sqairz shoes as I liked the claims on the infomercials. I am not sure sure if they actually give me more distance off the tee, but they are the most comfortable and stable shoe that I have ever worn. I will continue to buy these shoes in the future.

I have always worn Footjoy. From my first pair, to now. I’ve worn FJ for over 23 years. I currently game the FJ Originals, which are very comfortable, as I have a wide foot, and their wide means wide. Had a pair of the Contours, which I wore for probably 15 years, and one of the cleat inserts came out with the cleat once changing cleats. So, I SuperGlued the insert and the cleat in the sole. Wore them for a couple of rounds(discontinued by this time), and then bought the Originals, which are in there 3rd season. Going to buy one more pair(in case they discontinue them) of these, and should be good through retirement, as I am not hard on shoes. Don’t like the athletic styles, especially with the mesh, with dewy fairways, or lite rain. Cooler weather too. Dry and warm is what I want in a well made golf shoe. Footjoy gives me that…

I started playing golf in the 1950s when everyone wore heavy addle shoes with leather soles and 12 spikes on each sole. When spineless stunner soles became available in the 90s I went to them but I still like the solidarity of dress-style shoes. Most of my shoes are at least 20 years old because when you have several pair and clean and polish them regularly they take a long time to wear out.

Amen…..I also have about 20 pair and never wear the same pair for two rounds in a row.. my first pair went clickers clack on the sidewalk around the clubhouse. At 9 years old, I thought I was somebody in them. Now I have mostly FJ’s but also wear Ecco, Cole Hahn & Duca de Cosma.

I wear G/Fore almost exclusively. I have four pair with one being several years old. Fit, feel and quality is the best in my opinion. I also have a few pair of FJs and Adidas pro models. Those are also very nice and I do rotate, but the comfort and style of G/Fore are my favorite especially walking. I have not tried their “sneaker” type golf shoes, but their leather ones are of high quality. Last FJ Premiere I bought, the leather didn’t seem to be the same quality as in years past.

I wear only Footjoy Premier or MyJoys and whatever preceded them including the original Classics since the early 70’s. My reason is only Footjoy makes a NARROW width and a great shoe as well. So, the hell with all other companies

I have three pairs of Sqairz. I bought the first pair as the I wanted to try to help a right foot problem that other shoes had not solved. Immediately. the pain went away. I am a Senior player and walk 8 out of 10 rounds and only ride when they make me in tournaments. I have been asked several times how I like them and I always answer the ” right foot problem” which is not what is what the person thought I was going to say. I do believe that I am more stable, and thus more distance( one of the claims) but I am not chasing distance beyond the 225-235 normal drive with a single digit index. I am a huge fan of Sqairz and want to support them.

For me the adidas CODECHAOS, I have the 360 tour textile spikeless, fit well in their regular shape are still wide.
I have not yet come across SQAIRZ GOLF in Europe.
ASICS is very well known for running shoes.
Nike everyone will know, for me they are narrow shoes.
Under Armour is known to me as a fitness brand.

I am a golfer with a long narrow foot and it is very hard to find any of the major shoe companies other than FJ that carries golf shoes in an A or Narrow width. I wish the shoe companies would address this issue as I know there are lots of golfers that would love to try other brands besides FJ. But then again, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

Very comfortable and decent traction for a spikeless shoe.

Love Asics running shoes—especially the Cumulus and Nimbus—but the golf shoes are a No Go if they’re not in Wide sizes. And I vaguely remember reading that these golf shoes aren’t.

Otherwise, I’d buy a pair. So get it together Asics. I’m not asking for New Balance levels of width choices, just something besides a narrow-feeling D

I’ve been wearing Sqairz since last year and I like them quite a bit. I love the wide toe box giving my feet space to breathe in the shoe. The stability is great and I am currently wearing the Augusta special print so they are also more eye grabbing than some of their other pairs. My only complaint is the spikes wear fairly quickly, however, since Sqairz offers free replacements it isn’t a monetary hastle.
