Yet Another Milled Putter Company

Yet Another Milled Putter Company

I suspect a number of you reading this find yourselves asking:

What’s a Toulon?

Long-time MyGolfSpy readers and industry insiders will, no doubt, recognize the name. Toulon Designs’ Founder, Owner, and resident Head Cheese (or perhaps, Cheese Head) is Sean Toulon, former Executive VP with TaylorMade-adidas Golf.

After 16 years with the company, Sean left TaylorMade during its most-chaotic summer. At the time there was talk of retirement, but clearly Toulon hasn’t quite got the golf bug out of his system.

He’s started his own putter company…again.

toulon

Toulon has always had a certain affinity for putter design. He previously founded the Zevo putter company in the early 90s, and was the head of product creation at TaylorMade when its Rossa line and iconic Spider designs were created.

Your takeaway should be that Toulon isn’t just some random guy, one-too-many deep in a glass of Pinot, who thinks if Scotty can, he can too.

Toulon already has legitimate industry cred, and now, we’re told, he has genuine aspirations of taking on the big boys in an already crowded putter market.

We Go Way Back

I got to know Sean Toulon a bit during his time at TaylorMade. Over the years, Toulon and MyGolfSpy crossed paths several times. Often pleasantly, sometimes less so, but Sean is a guy I came to trust to shoot me straight…even if it was often off-the-record.

There’s no better example of the generally friendly, but sometimes complex nature of the relationship than the time Toulon introduced me and the editor of another media outlet to Gary McCord.

Toulon introduced my colleague by name and raved about the great work his team did in helping get the TaylorMade message out. He then turned to me and said, “And this guy is an asshole“.

I suspect he was half-kidding. A fair assessment regardless.

In his position, I’d probably have done the same.

Needless to say, I like Sean quite a bit, and certainly wish him well with his putter business.

About Toulon Design Putters

Here’s how the Toulon Design Twitter Profile describes the upcoming putters.

“Dedicated to crafting putters as finely tuned instruments, possessing both rare beauty and exacting precision.”

While details are relatively scarce at this time, Toulon has released the names of four models:

  • Madison – Toulon’s hometown
  • Rochester – Home to Oak Hill CC and Walter Hagen
  • San Diego – Home to Torrey Pines, and a good portion of the golf equipment industry
  • San Francisco – Home to The Olympic Club, San Francisco Club, Lake Merced, and Harding Park

General descriptions of a couple of the models have been posted on the Toulon Design Facebook page.

toulon-sole-plate

Given Toulon’s roots deep inside the TaylorMade Empire, my assumption is that Toulon Designs will release a new model every 6-8 weeks and may occasionally re-release existing models with distinctive, science-driven, finishes (AKA white paint).

I kid…at least I hope I’m kidding.

We’re planning to check in with Sean soon to get a better understanding of exactly how he plans to distinguish his company among the bevy of boutique putter brands already earning a living off variations of the classic Anser.

Is there room for another?

As always, let us know what you think, and stay tuned.

Toulon’s website (http://www.toulondesign.com/) doesn’t work. It won’t allow you to look at any putters nor prices. Hard to sell them with the engine behind the company isn’t functioning…
Also, no mention of what these will retail for, which probably means they’ll be on the same price range as a Scotty or Bettinardi putter, which is an awful lot for an untested, new piece of equipment.
I’m hoping he’ll take a page from his former TaylorMade brother, Dean Snell – and put a high quality product at an attractive selling price and build a brand!

My father hired Sean for Taylor Made back in the day.
I sold more putters for Sean than anybody else when he was the man at Lotus Golf. Who? Right.
      Sean had done this before.
Respectfully what’s different this time around?

I don’t get it , do people think that we ,as golfers will entrust ” another ” putter manufacturer ,who will just put a version that is possibly 2 millimetres different in way or another than another manufacturer. That may have worked with drivers but I will be damned if they can take my Ping Anser II and redefine it once again. ENOUGH I say !!

When it is said and done, and if the technology is commoditized, it is all about physics. When that become common sense, it will be challenge to differentiate.

Some chose because of color to match golf bags; some just SC haters; if the price is above $5,000, there is a market for that; the Anser type is just a safe bet, and for conforming to USGA, so they can have marketing and pro level appeal. But, let’s look at the histories, as everyone, “always” goes back to their trusty “old” putter, no exception. Even when pro switch brand, the new brand will match the specification and characteristics to a fault just to “match” what was ingrained, through all the false strokes (No, I won’t call it yips) and millions of compromise of making those putts feel proper, yet, technically wrong regardless.

And we know it has nothing to do with the putter, when you step up to address the putt, you mind has made up through your eye sight and reading the line and drawing from your memory, either been there or watch others or trust your little black-book. Then there is the weather, moisture, grain, wind, That is 80-90% of putting to begin with.

Then your physique, and your mental state, maybe what you ate last night or this morning or number of hours you slept, the toll on your body, from travel, last one or two rounds, bad round and/or good round, someone said something nice in the parking lot, in the locker room, or someone just wasn’t nice to you or attempt to kidnap you, a bar fight? LOL! Forgot your energy bar and you are down the stretch, can’t focus, your shoes leaks, you caddie throw up, yeah, we seem it all. And who has Tiger Dad’s mental boot camp or Se Ri Pak Dad’s infamous cemetery camp out to develop mental toughness, to actually execute those “must made” putts. You get the gist!

The putter is such a small element in making putts, it is more of a bragging right!! Oh, yeah, the “circle of T” stamp, circa 19xx, why not 14xx and stamp it King James II of Scotland, circa 1457. Because that is how my putter will be stamped! LOL! And everything will say “colf” instead of “golf”. Thank God, golf over take Archery for popularity, or should I say thank King James II of Scotland !! Is might made of GSS, more adjustability than PXG, more sexy than Jason’s Ghost Itsy Bitsy Spider, mine will have Victoria Secret lingerie name with UMC MMA tattoo…

When dynamic green technology matures, where contours are random every day. When Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and USGA puts some limitation on how a colf ball should be, when we can count on the longest ball will never exceed 300 yard and make the game decide on the great equalizer, a la putting on green, we will truly enjoy colf as it should be.

Golf business is hard! Hail to Mr. Sean Toulon and may his venture will be successful, as I am not found of big companies and off the shelf products, but, love the boutique product with unique values! Golf is hard, but, thanks to continue innovation in value that we rely on those colf nuts like Parson and Toulon to prolong our passion with “golf”…

I agree, I can’t say the world needs another Anser style putter (too bad that was the design sketch he decided to let the public see first), but will hold judgement until I can see the whole range.

Which BTW, is not possible because there is no ‘website’ to speak of. Word of advice to all you up and coming entrepreneurs – DON’T release a website link that just goes to a page with a logo. Have something there that people can look at, it’s very irritating otherwise and does not show much business acumen.

Sean Toulon created some incredibly good golf equipment at Zevo all those years ago and I had the pleasure of meeting him at the time..i couldn’t understand why retailers wouldn’t take it on board..the product was great! So Sean propelled Taylor Made new product sales to great heights and seems typical after all the good work,a company and a valued employee part company! Sorry to see that..however if Sean would look at Williams Racing Golf website and get excited..then Sean please contact me / us..to talk!
All the best with Toulon putters meantime,
      cheers,
      James W.

I dig the logo and work on the bottom, very cool engravings/stamping. Those plates that will be screwed into the bottom are a cool touch and the color range iw sweet , but personally, the bumpers/rollers on the back of the above pictured model look like every other Anser style putter.
I’d be interested in seeing his other models and what they do with the faces and necks/hosels, but this first impression from an overall look/design stance…….meh.

I like what companies like Bellum-Winmore, Xenon and Tyson Lamb have done recently with the blade putter head designs.
