This Could Be the Most Underrated Brand in Golf

Do you know what the second most popular U.S. shoe brand is?

If you said Skechers, you’re either lying or made a really good guess. But the truth is the truth. Outside of NIKE, Skechers is the best-selling casual shoe brand in the United States.

Why then, when looking for a new pair of golf shoes, is the brand with the giant “S” logo often an afterthought?

When I was in middle school, I was obsessed with NIKE and Air Jordan. I am, to some degree, still that same 12-year-old kid who just wanted to have the coolest shoes. If NIKE and Jordan were the top of the sneaker pyramid, it always felt like Skechers was at the bottom.

To me, Skechers were always just the shoe that janitors wore (no offense intended, I was a janitor all through college to support my family). And my opinion largely stayed that way until I started testing and reviewing golf shoes for a living.

Over the past two years, I’ve worn, tested or reviewed hundreds of golf shoes. And none are as underrated or underappreciated as Skechers.

Yep, the kid who wouldn’t touch Skechers with a 30-foot pole is here to shout it from the rooftops: Skechers are the most underrated golf shoes on the market!

No, I’m not trying to brownnose the brand or anything like that, I’m just calling it like I see it. When products stand out in testing, it’s my job to highlight them. If my job is your game, then it’s my responsibility to shine a light on products that punch well above their weight class.

That, friends, is why Skechers should be on your radar.

Why Should You Care?

No, Skechers aren’t perennial winners in the typical sense. But when put up against the likes of adidas, PAYNTR, Under Armour and more, Skechers consistently outshines and over-indexes in two key areas: comfort and value.

Let’s talk about it. If you care for nothing else but comfort, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more comfortable golf shoe. The spikeless Skechers Go Golf 2 Rover Slip-In was one of the most comfortable golf shoes to ever grace my foot. The same can be said for the spiked Go Golf Blade GF.

But they aren’t just comfortable. The other thing Skechers always nails is value. Value is not determined on price alone. It’s rare that the cheapest offering in a test win’s the esteemed “Best Value” award.

Skechers Golf Shoes

Value is, instead, a combination of price and performance. Any product given an award for Best Value has performance that far exceeds its price.

If there ever was a prime example of this, it would again be Skechers.

They aren’t the “cheapest” golf shoes on the market. But with most models around the $100-$120 price point, they provide performance that stacks up to shoes nearly twice the price.

(S)ex Appeal

Skechers golf shoes

For lack of a better term, the reason Skechers is so underrated is because the brand lacks “sex appeal.” No one is buying Skechers for flashy styles, cool looks or to impress the cart girl. You won’t catch the handsome Brooks Koepka or charming Scottie Scheffler in a pair.

Isn’t Matt Fitzpatrick just the perfect Skechers brand ambassador? Anyways …

If Skechers could fix the stigma that they aren’t cool or hip, I think they’d easily gain some market share from the big dogs.

That’s much easier said than done.

Until then (if they ever get there), they’ll continue to make underappreciated, great performing products that consumers should pay attention to.

I bought the go golf pro 6 at the start of the year and have been thoroughly impressed. The arch fit is great for supporting underfoot, and the outsole has tons of traction with 7 spikes and the use of the new tour flex pro. The only reason for me no longer wearing them is a nagging ankle injury that has me moving to a more boot or mid style shoe. For the price the performance and comfort can’t be beat!

I’ve been a Skechers wearer for many years now. I usually walk my rounds and have found that their shoes have great support but more importantly superior comfort. I’ve never experienced any foot pain or gotten blisters over all the many rounds I’ve played in Skechers footwear. Five out of five star brand!

Have been wearing Skechers golf shoes (and athletic shoes) for around 8 years now and they are extremely comfortable and very well priced. Also come in Wide sizes which I require and not all brands seem to produce.

I have been a FJ guy for decades. I have enough FJ shoes that I rotate them and not one pair see’s more that 3 months of action each year. As the trend moved towards the lighter more running shoe type of golf shoe, I of course went to the FJ shoes. They were not comfortable. When the time came to replace one of my FJ shoes, I tried the more traditional FJ’s they too were not suppling the comfort I was accustomed to. I have found myself gravitating to and purchasing Addidas and New Balance shoes. I have not tried Skechers, but I might take a look at them for my next pair.

Probably will never try them as I have found Adidas 3D Boost, ECCO & now GFORE as my best fits. Every FJ was horrible on comfort. New GFores look good & fit wide! Sketchers? IDK

Same pair of Skechers GoGolf for about 8 years now, at 20 to 25 rounds per year. Very comfortable and don’t at all feel the need to replace them yet. Waterproof? Probably. Though I’m in San Diego and they’ve been tested only a few times. Don’t recall any problems. Kudos to the young lady who fit me for them at a south Orange County Skechers store. She measured EACH of my feet and found that my left foot was a size 12 and my right foot was nearly a 13. I had visited a podiatrist a year earlier and neither he or his staff measured my feet before the exam. You’d think that would be routine.

I’ve had several pairs of the Skechers Go Golf Torque Twist – which is their version of the BOA laces. The eyelets are made of pieces of cloth?!? They do NOT last. Granted, the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn, but they don’t last more than a season. It breaks my heart to know I’ll never buy them again. Skechers replaced one pair, the other was beyond the 1 year warranty (barely) and they won’t do anything about it. Seems criminal that a golf shoe, that gets worn less than 50 times, wears out and the company does nothing about it.

When I’m golf shoe shopping these days, the first thing I look for is comfort. Next would be waterproofing, then, can I get them in a color other than white. I’ve walked out of the store a few times with Skechers.

I need an extra wide golf shoe. Tried Skechers a few years ago and was blown away. They fit great, were very lightweight, and I was paying well under $100 a pair. What could go wrong??? I do not want the spike version and bought spikeless. Found the “nubs” lasted around 6 months. OK for a nice dry day, no good for wet or damp conditions. Sadly I left Skechers and went to New Balance. If Skechers comes up with a spikeless shoe that last longer I’ll be back.

Good article! I like Skechers Arch Support sneakers, but I’ll never purchase another pair of their golf shoes. Three months & three days after I bought my first pair of Skechers, my sock & foot were wet after the round, and saw the heel separated. No problem, I go down to the local Skechers, 2.2 miles away, with my original receipt. Sorry we can’t take them, you’ll have to contact Customer Service. No problem. Call customer service, they told me to email us photos of both shoes and where the shoe is damaged. Take photos & email. 2 weeks later still no response by Skechers. I called, oh after looking into the issue, we received the photos but cannot open the file. Please resend in jpg format. Ok. Resend photo’s again. 2 weeks later, no response. So far a month has gone by and still no resolve. FF 3 months later & still no resolution. Yet, I had an issue with Sqairz shoes. The issue was resolved by Customer Service in less than 10 days. Not to mention, I got a call from Customer Service a couple of days later, the shoes were on back order, would you like a different style? The shoe issue was resolved in 10 days, a new pair was sent to me & issue was resolved in less than a month after the inquiry (BTW the Sqairz shoes were 11 months old). Skechers Customer Service needs work in my opinion.

I have big ,wide feet. Finding a pair of schools that are comfortable for 18 holes is though. Even tougher is finding a comfortable and performing golf shoe. I have three pair of Sketchers that I rotate. All three spiked. Most comfortable golf shoe I have ever wore.

I noticed this past Saturday that my 4-ball were all wearing Sketchers, and my last 3 pairs have all been Sketchers.

I think that brand has quietly grown and stolen a decent market share. Was a market that needed some wake-up.

Hi Gregory. I have a boney heel and have trashed many other shoes by wearing out the heel & getting blisters similar to what you describe – but not in the Sketchers. Their liner mesh has lasted well for me.

Two thoughts : I use volume reducers to make sure my feet do not move in the shoe (Sketchers give great “hug” to my foot, but are quite a “high volume” or “deep” shape) I would do this in many brands. Also I’ve only used the Go Golf “Pro” line of shoes.

Here in Ireland only best made shoes remain water proof more than a year and Sketchers do great in that regard.

I have been wearing Scechers golf shoes for the past 4 years. I love the comfort and support they give me on the course when I walk. I wear the spikeless and could not be happier with my choice to wear the brand. I’m not out there to win a fashion show, I’m out to play the best game I can and Scechers has done me right. I would definitley give then a try. Thank you!!

I would like to try them but I am unable to find them in a wide width. Their standard width is not wide enough and the extra wide is too wide. Lately I’ve been going the Vijay Singh route and wearing my trail running shoes on the course.

Many years ago I bought a pair of black slip-ons for work. I found them very comfortable, but wasn’t brand conscious until my son said, “Dad, you’re lucky”. I asked him what he meant, and he said “because you have a pair of Skechers”. They were a new brand at the time. A couple years ago, I bought a pair of Skechers Golf shoes. All my other golf shoes have been Footjoys, but the Skechers quickly became my walking shoes, and the ones I take on trips when I plan to golf.

If you look at Adidas shoes, they’re basically copies of Skechers nowadays.
The ZG shoes pretty much are the same as the Skechers. Plastic type with a very cushioned feeling. Wipes clean easily.
I’ve worn Skechers for over a decade. Good shoes. Not the most stylish, but they have always stuck to their own designs focused on comfort

Just bought a pair of Footjoys and even though they were on sale, they were a bit pricey. However, next pair WILL be Skechers. Funny thing is, I have three other pairs of Skechers for casual use. They’re all great shoes. The only negative…I’m not sure about the ‘Slip-ins’ particularly for golf. If the golf shoes are as good as the casuals, I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.

I have hard to fit feet. I am now wearing the Skechers Rover Slip Ins. Fit like a glove, can walk 18 comfortably. Surprisingly good grip. Not as good lateral stability as, for example, my Puma Ignites, but not bad either. All in all, my favorite shoe since Puma discontinued the FAAS Lite. Really like these.

I own two pair of Go golf Skechers. One pair Spikeless the other spiked. I have a very wide foot. This is the only brand in Extra wide that truly fit. I got 80 rounds last year walking out of the spikeless pair. The leather has a hard time holding up in early morning play. Tried to replace with a different brand to get the cool factor but I guess I’m just a nerd at heart

Being from Denmark, I’ve been a happy and faithful ECCO-customer for all my golfing career. Until Putin invaded Ukraine, and ECCO did nothing but continued their quite significant support of Putin’s Russia. My ECCO’s are now in the garbage bin, and I’ve converted to Sketchers. Not quite as luxurious as ECCO, but equally comfortable – if not more – and much better value. Bye bye Putin. Bye bye ECCO.

My last two pairs of golf shoes have been Skechers. My next will be, too. About half my golf crowd, too.
My criteria for golf shoes, in order:
      (1) Comfort! Without this, no shoe is worth it.
      (2) Stays waterproof, or at least water-resistant. (Some of the big names lose their water-resistance in less than a year.)
      (3) Stability in the golf swing. (I don’t have a particularly violent swing. I’ve never tried golf shoes that didn’t pass this test, so I don’t worry about it.)
Against this set of criteria, Skechers wins. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to be pushing their golf shoes very hard; they don’t even carry them in the Skechers outlet near me.
The only brand that ever did as well for me — you’re not gonna believe me — is Crocs. But they got out of the golf shoe business a few years ago.

Hey Conner I know several pair of golf shoes and what golfer doesn’t. I have Footjoy, Ecco, Under Armour and 3 pair of sketchers . I have a wide foot and I also walk my very hilly golf course I play in Canada . Sketchers are not sexy, but very comfortable . I would highly recommend giving them a try. They are at a good price point and they are starting to get some nicer shoes. Please note I have a very fashionable golf wardrobe so looks are important to me, but my feet thank me when I wear my go to sketchers

I’ve used Sketchers trail shoes for golf for 3 years. It’s the only shoe that I’ve used for golf that has lasted more than a season and a half. It also has maintained it’s waterproof feature for more than a year. Bought my wife Sketchers golf shoes last year and they are now on their second year with no real wear. Never had that experience with any other brand of golf shoe. Most lasted about a year.

They were super comfortable and gave me great support. I’ve had several pairs since. I have a few pairs or shoes and rotate between my FJ’s and Skechers.
And I’ve always been a form follows function guy.
But I think some of the Skechers are good looking shoes.
