We Asked Golfers Why They Play the Titleist Pro V1. Here’s What They Said.

When it comes to golf balls, the Titleist Pro V1 family needs no introduction. Year after year, it’s among the most played and trusted balls in the game—on Tour, in weekend bags, and yes, across the MyGolfSpy Forum. It’s been the gold standard for decades.

In our latest Forum Poll, the Pro V1 lineup finished second overall, but that’s only part of the story. The bigger question is why. Why do golfers keep choosing the Pro V1 and Pro V1x over the countless alternatives on the shelves?

We turned to Forum members to share their own reasons—and their answers show there’s no single path to putting a Pro V1 in play.

Tradition and Familiarity

Sometimes, loyalty comes down to habit, availability, and maybe just getting some free at a tournament.

“Every year when we attend our Member-Guest tournament, each player gets two dozen Pro V1 balls. Then at Christmas my son saw that I had Pro V1’s in my bag, so that’s what I got.” – CrazyGolfNut

“I kept winning them during our men’s league so it became my default. Tried a Chrome Soft years ago and tore the cover with a chip—never went back.” – TheIslandGolfer

In other words, for some golfers, the Pro V1 becomes the “default” ball not because they chased it, but because it’s always been there.

Performance That Proves Itself

Others landed on the Pro V1 after putting it through its paces. Biases, marketing, and price tags aside—performance won them over.

“I was never a user of Titleist balls. I had a bias against their marketing. I had a ball fitting this year and the best ball for me was the Pro V1… all the numbers proved it, so now I only play that ball.” – MattF

“Just started to play these actually… using the Pro V1x was a world of difference for my iron game, giving me the extra spin and height I was missing. The extra carry and short-game spin are just a plus.” – JAYER38

Data, feel, and results don’t lie. For these golfers, the Pro V1 wasn’t about reputation—it was about finding a measurable edge.

The Simple Answer

And then, of course, there are those who cut straight to the chase:

“I find lots of them on the golf course 🤪.” – cnosil

Sometimes the best golf ball is the one you don’t have to buy.

The Takeaway

The Pro V1 family inspires loyalty for a variety of reasons: tradition, trust, performance, or simple availability. Some golfers play them because they’re handed out at tournaments or found in the rough. Others use them because fittings and testing prove they’re the best ball for their game.

What’s clear is that the Pro V1 remains a touchstone—a ball that golfers measure others against, whether they stick with it or explore alternatives.

So, why do you play the ball you do? Is it data-driven, convenience, or just what ends up in your bag? Jump into the Forum and share your story.

I look for balls and there are a lot of them. All the top line balls are pretty good for me, I do happen to bomb super softs. I played tpx for a while this summer. I played Bridgestone. Maxfli tour. Chrome soft as well as the Supers. My joke is I don’t play anything that has an aggressive name. Warbird, diablo, speed, kaos, etc.

But really in the end, I do just play best with ProV’s.

In the 1980s/early 90s, I swore by Titleist DT 90s. Tried different balls over the years. Really liked Srixon Z Star, but golf shops didn’t always have them. So went to Chromesoft, good distance but not so great around greens. A teaching pro recommended V1x, and Ive stayed with it. Especially after a fitting landed me with T200 irons, I figured Titleist ball ought to be good with Titleist irons. Recently did a ball fitting. It confirmed Pro V1x.

I play with Pro V1X since it is the best ball for putting, always straight out of my putter face, and conssistence distance, always close or into the hole. Aside from that I have no complaints for PRO V1X playability from the tee to the green. I used to balanced and mark lighter point in balls in salty water, stop doing that since no need for PRO V1X. I am 69 years old, 12.8 Index, still playing from the whites tees.

My game is not great. I don’t keep a handicap but basically a bogie or slightly better golfer. I have tried most balls, many of which I’ve found (I don’t use ones that have obviously been there a while or are scuffed). While I have not scientifically tested them, I don’t see a bit of difference in my game regardless of the ball I’m using.

Pitch a few balls 10-20 yards on the green, and then you’ll know why pro V1 is king. Plus the feel sound off the putter and driver is perfect. Z stars are close but not enough.

      Nice article Andrew.
Agree with MattF and JAYER38. Ball testing first and foremost.
      Keep up the good work!

Was playing Member’s Mark ball for most of season (and was happy with it) until ball test results showed it didn’t travel as far as ProV1 for my swing speed. Sure enough, changed back to ProV1 and saw greater distance on all full swings and produced more sub-80 rounds that dropped my index 1.5 strokes.

As the adverts say, it’s the Number 1 ball in golf, and it’s proven it with so many wins compared to the others since its introduction

The analog answer is to take a few balls you are considering for a practice round. Maybe an early evening 3-4 holes where you hit multiple tee balls and irons including chipping and putting. I usually do this once a season to see if I can outhit my ProV1. A few years ago I switched to a TM TP Tour ball. They did go further off the tee but I hated them around the greens and of all the silly things I hated the sound on putts! Crazy. Anyway I shortly went back to my ProV1. I only use a ball for 6 holes and have dozens of slightly used ProV1’s in my garage that I give to my sons who appreciate my largesse. If I can find ProV1 “Practice” balls I buy them to save a few bucks.

The practice balls are hot garbage. Avoid them at all costs. You would be better off with the TM than those. Most are 2nds and can be off center/unbalanced and go everywhere. You think its YOU but it NOT….its the crap ball you saved money on but now give up multiple strokes per game because of it.
