Rhoback Apparel Review

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

What We Tried:

Rhoback Golf Apparel. Your dad’s favorite apparel brand and your mom’s favorite golf influencer’s favorite apparel brand. I put three popular Rhoback items to the test including a Rhoback polo, quarter-zip and hoodie.

Who Tried It:

Connor. Director of Soft Goods Testing and resident sneakerhead. I believe golf is better with a pair of cool shoes and comfortable joggers.

What the heck is Rhoback?

That cute little dog logo you’ve seen on the shoulder of influencers and golfers galore? That’s Rhoback. Based in Charlottesville, Va., (a few hours up the road from MyGolfSpy HQ), the guys there set out to create apparel that can seamlessly transition from activity to activity.

I’ve been wanting to give their stuff a try for a while. That time has come.

Rhoback Polo Review

Rhoback Golf Polo

Let’s start with the Rhoback polo. Available in various colors and patterns, the Rhoback polo is great on and off the course. The lightweight construction provided great breathability and stood up well both in the humidity of Virginia and the dry desert heat of Arizona.

My favorite thing about the Rhoback golf polo is the collar. Man, did they nail the collar design. The thicker-than-most collar lays perfectly flat at all times, no matter how many times it is washed. Ever used those little eye-stays in a dress shirt? The collar of the Rhoback polo has a similar effect.

This fixes the detail that most often plagues otherwise solid golf polo shirts: the dreaded “bacon” collar. A wavy, drooping collar is a surefire way to keep the cart girl away.

The fit was true to size. Long enough to tuck in (if that’s your thing) and fitted enough to keep the material from interfering with your swing or putting stroke.

Rhoback Q-Zip Review

Rhoback Q-Zip

Perhaps the quintessential piece of golf clothing is the quarter-zip. And no one takes it more seriously than Rhoback.

Between the slick patterns and comfortable fit, the Rhoback Q-Zip is hard to beat. I’m a particular fan of the fun houndstooth patterns but they have plenty of solids and stripes for those of you who are a little less adventurous.

The Rhoback Q-Zip provides ample warmth from the chilly wind and even UV protection for your sensitive skin.

Did I mention it’s soft? Rhoback’s Q-Zip is the most comfortable quarter-zip that’s ever graced my torso. I did find the arm length to be a little long for my liking but that’s neither here nor there. Not enough of a problem to keep me from playing in it.

Rhoback Hoodie Review

Rhoback Hoodie

The Rhoback hoodie is quite possibly the softest piece of clothing I’ve ever owned. Man, is it soft. It’s the perfect weight for lounging or for a night out.

The form-fitting Rhoback hoodie is also great for the golf course. It’s light enough and provides UV protection for a sunny day but provides coverage and warmth when it gets a little chilly. The polyester and nylon blend provides perfect stretch for freedom of moment on the course or on the couch.

My one gripe? I would love a kangaroo pocket. It’s just personal preference but somewhere to keep my hands nice and toasty is always a welcome addition.

Once You Go Rhoback, You’ll Never Go Back

Rhoback Q-Zip review

All in all, the Rhoback golf apparel lineup is flat-out awesome. The well-designed, well-constructed polo, quarter-zip and hoodie are expensive but worth it if you’re willing to spend a couple of extra dollars for quality. Whether you’re on the hunt for your new favorite polo or the softest hoodie to grace God’s green earth, you can’t go wrong with a little Rhoback action.

I love the hoodies. They’re perfect for golf and mild FL winters, generally. For the budget-conscious, you can find 20% off promo codes with a quick google search.

$80 for a hoodie, even with the discount, is still about $50 too much for a hoodie IMHO and $80 doesn’t count as “budget conscious” for most.

With all due respect, 20% off of $100 is still $80 for a hoodie. As I mentioned in the Lululemon shorts article, golf has seen a really odd sudden departure from “grow the game” to significant cost increases in promoted golf merch.

That’s fair. I’ve gotten more than the $80 (x2) value out of mine. All of the cheaper options I tried fit poorly and affected my swing. YMMV

Wow, a shocking amount of people on here commenting care more about price than quality. There are always 10-20% discount codes for rhoback gear online, so spend 5 minutes to make your purchase worthwhile.

As someone who owns a decent amount of the brand (no t-shirts though), I can say that the material holds up incredibly well to constant wear and washing, and the fit is as good as it gets, form fitting without being tight. Living in central texas, the polos never stick to your skin in the 105 degree heat with 50% humidity. They don’t stretch and they don’t fade, and you aren’t having to replace them every other season. The hoodies work great in the gym or at the pub.

I was also a bit surprised at the description of the “target audience”, as I’ve typically only seen younger (<35) people wearing the brand.

Nice looking shirts. But for the “budget-conscious” golfer (i.e. have to buy cheap) they are a bit out of my price range. The Hawaiian would be my choice if I were to get one, but that’s more than I usually pay for two shirts. But if I could afford it … yowza!

Costco all the way baby! Wonderful polos under $20 (Greg Norman polos at Costco are the bomb)… hell, it is costco from underwear outward lol… from 61 year old cheap male who doesn’t care anymore what other people thank.

2nd the Costco. Scored a $20 Greg Norman polo and a $15 Callaway polo earlier this spring. Same Costco had Callaway golf shorts, got a couple of pairs for I think $20/shorts.

Great looking selection, I’m sure quality is awesome. But $89+ for a shirt and $120+ for quarter zips. Maybe I’m just old and cheap. But here in east TX heat and humidity, nothing seems to last long. Comfortable, cotton and inexpensive works for me.

$68 for a T-shirt??? (which I don’t believe should be worn to a golf course anyway) I can get about 10 really super soft Tees at Wally world for 68 bucks. And they wonder why it’s hard to get new golfers into the game. After you spend $ 2500 to 3000 for a full set of clubs, a couple hundred on shoes, about $250 for clothes, $50 for good golf balls and around $100 for greens fees it gets really expensive. What’s next….. $40 underwear and $25 socks ??? (probably have those already) It’s not surprising people think this is an elitist sport. Okay…. rant over

Sick rant, dude. But you’ll be relieved to learn that Rhoback hasn’t yet managed to eliminate their competition. You can still get your $25 Pebble Beach polos and shorts at PGA SS, along with used clubs, sub-$100 shoes, and non-tour level golf balls.

I agree with both commenters. I have found that Donald Ross and Ashworth when on sale are the way to go for upscale polos. Especially like that Donald Ross offers sport fit and classic fit.

Hear me out, I like the look of their clothes. I love reading all the positive reviews. But for God’s sake – we’re going the wrong direction with $80-90 polos and $100 hoodies and $120 quarter zips. I don’t care if they do a Tom’s shoes style of donating an equal item to the homeless. I’m having a hard time paying $80 for a polo that feels just as fine as the $15 polo at Costco even if it commemorates a once in a lifetime event like attending the Masters. This doesn’t grow the game. It grows somebody’s paycheck – or worse, the credit card balance of someone foolishly chasing the influencer brands. While we’re at it, get off my lawn.

Great point, Scott. I don’t love the direction the pricing of golf gear, in general, is heading.

Agreed. I wait for Old Navy to go on sale or stop by my local Goodwill occasionally to find polos in good shape for $7 (nabbed a Johnnie O for that recently, with tags!).
