TaylorMade MySpider X Designer

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

WHAT WE TRIED

TaylorMade MySpider X Custom putter interface – The online design interface that allows golfers to create customized versions of TaylorMade’s Spider X mallet.

YOUR CUSTOM BUILDER

Dave Wolfe – MyGolfSpy writer and putter fanatic. I’ve tested hundreds (maybe thousands) of flatsticks.

BUILDING A MYSPIDER X

When it comes to custom putters, some companies follow traditional human-based design channels as I documented with Bettinardi’s custom putter program. Others have online customization interfaces with myriad options. The great thing about designing putters online is that you get to see a mock-up of your design right away. While it’s cool to see the computer rendering of the putter, I always wonder how that rendering will compare to the finished putter.

Last year, I explored the expectation versus reality story using the Toulon Garage online interface. Today, I’m going to put the TaylorMade MySpider X designer to the test.

MYSPIDER X BUILD OPTIONS

The number of options is probably the most significant aspect. Adding a couple of stamps is not the same as controlling every aspect of a putter’s design. With this in mind, let’s take a look at what you can customize with the MySpider X program:

OPTIONS: MYSPIDER X

  • Head: Spider X
  • Dexterity: Right and Left
  • Neck Options: 3 (2 for left-handed)
  • True Path Alignment Options: 2
  • Alignment Options: 4
  • Head Colors: 16
  • Weight Colors: 11
  • Face Insert Color: 11
  • TaylorMade Badge Colors: 11
  • Sole Plate Colors: 7
  • Spider X Badge Color: 10
  • Shaft: KBS Tour CT Putter shaft
  • Grip Models: 1
  • Grip Colors: 14

If my math is correct, the MySpider X designer gives you around 150 million MySpider X permutations.

HOSEL OPTIONS

You can choose from three hosel options: single bend, slant or flow neck. If you are a lefty, the flow-neck option is not available. These necks will influence how the mallet swings. The toe hang of the single-bend neck will make your MySpider X play like a traditional mallet. Both the flow-neck and the slant-neck will increase the toe hang, making the mallet swing more blade-like.

Most Tour pros playing the Spider Tour and Spider X go with the slant neck.

The alignment scheme contains two separate design fields. First, you decide if you want the True Path alignment element. Of course, the adding or omitting of this large white design is an aesthetic choice as well. After you decide on the True Path, you choose either a short sightline, a single sightline, a T-sightline or none at all.

Then come the colors. You can stick with a theme or channel the chaos. Not all colors are available on all parts, though, so monochromatic builds may be limited.

Finishing out the build, you will select a length between 32 and 36 inches in quarter-inch increments. The final choice will be selecting one of the 14 colors of SuperStroke GTR 1.0 putter grips.

DAVE’S MYSPIDER X: HELLO JOKER

My overall impression of the MySpider X interface? Quick and easy. If you know what you want, you could probably go from the first click to purchase in five minutes or less.

For me, there were two main design questions. The first was whether to include the True Path element. While I have gamed a Spider Tour for a while, I have not spent that much time with the Spider X. It was tough to tell from the computer if the large white top would be helpful or distracting. Ultimately, I went with it since it seemed to be a key Spider X feature.

Deciding the colors also took some time. If you need things to match, you may want to start with the soleplate since that has the fewest color options.

INTERFACE ISSUES: MINOR

I have just two real criticisms of the design engine. First, under the body color options, you need to click a small arrow to see the last color option. Since none of the other color menus requires this, I can see how someone could miss the arrow and the additional lime green color option. The other part of the interface that is functional but counter to the rest of the design is the grip color selection. All of the other colors are selected by picking a colored box but grip color selection requires scrolling through a list.

You have only one grip to choose from. So if you are not a fan of the SuperStroke GTR 1.0, you will need to add a grip once you get your putter. Adjusting lie and loft will also need to be done at your local shop since these options are not part of the interface.

COMPLETING THE THEME

Once I established my Joker theme, I knew that the stock MySpider X headcover wasn’t going to get it done. Thankfully, I came across the Joker headcover from Pins and Aces Golf Co. It was the perfect capstone for my build.

SATISFACTION AND VALUE

I am very impressed with my MySpider X. The online build images were representative of the actual putter I received.

Your MySpider X will cost $420. However, if you are planning on buying a stock Spider X in a shop, you should think about the MySpider X option. The retail price of the Spider X is $349.99. If you have already set aside the $350 for a Spider X, spending that additional $70 gets you a whole lot of options.

THE TAKEAWAY

The MySpider X design interface is great. There are  millions of options, both aesthetic and functional. While $420 may be a healthy investment for a putter, the $70 upcharge from the stock offering is very reasonable. Plus, it took only 16 days from clicking “Order Now” to FedEx delivering my MySpider X.

      Hi
Has anybody had an issue with the colored insert.? Some people saying
the feel is not as good as the standard white.
I have ordered an X with orange face.
      Would love feedback here.

Love the look of your Joker. I have been having a major issue trying to order My Spider X Putter. No matter what length you choose it defaults to 35″. If someone didn’t look at this close it would be more than a nasty surprise. I have been at it since Friday night and no matter what length I choose once it is in my cart it is 35″. I will be calling Taylormade on Monday, can’t wait for the reason. My guess “Ya sorry due to Covid we only have 35” putters so we waste everyone’s time figuring out a design only to send them a putter that is too damn long. LAME!

Wow, some people seem quite perturbed about how others spend money. I totally loved designing my Spider X. I’ve also got a Newport 2 and a Phantom 12.5 as well as several Odyssey’s and enjoy each – do they ( or any other clubs ) make me a better player ? Likely not, but the mere possession of such nice clubs enhances my enjoyment of this Greatest Game and so why should anyone else worry about how I or anyone else spends money.

I was interested in TaylorMade’s online personal design putters and a few different times went through the process of designing a putter at their website. I was pretty close to pulling the trigger, but the number of customers who left reviews at the TaylorMade website complaining of the poor paint/finish quality dissuaded me. Not a good sign.

I had bought one of these. After just a couple of rounds, the paint started to come off. I will give kudos to Taylor Made customer service though. The issued me a refund even though it had been customized. I hope they’re doing better with quality control. Great company to do business with.

That’s always going to be an issue with painted steel body putters, they’re going to wear and/or they’ll have issues with the finish. They’re nice looking new, but they’re expensive for what they are and there’s a premium for the custom finish.

Not sure about the Joker, I would have gone for Kermit the Frog.

As a HUGE fan of all things Batman, I love the putter design here. I’ve messed around on TM’s site and find it pretty easy and intuitive to use. I’ve also messed around with the TM Spider putter in my local shop and think it seems to roll fairly well. Right now I’m really loving my EVNROLL ER2B at the moment, but If I get a new putter in the future, I’ll seriously consider this option. “If you’re going to do it, do it with style.”

It’s seems a large price to pay for style. You should fitted first for the proper club. Toe hang, length, grip options, loft. The last two being extras here. One would think that clubs aren’t selling due to the shutdown and in most places playing was also limited. I got fitted 2 years ago and am happy with my choice. I believe that more time spent on serious practice would yield better results.
P.S. I’m off to the driving range to practice my putting.

I work on course. I can tell you rounds are way up over last year, and that’s with being shut down for 6 weeks. Cub Sales are almost double what we did last year. Balls forget about it, we can’t keep them in stock.

Other than resort destinations that rely on large groups and most people have to get to via air travel, the golf industry as a whole is one that has seen increases across the board since the pandemic started.

Every once in a while they release a center shafted chalk version in their vault; would absolutely love it if they could toss center shaft as an option in the custom shop, really the only thing holding me back from purchasing.

I don’t think any of us reading this blog are going to win a tour event or make a living with our game – so we might as well have fun with the things we can control. From golf shirts, to hats, to bags, club clovers, and custom golf carts, this is just another expression of having fun with our game.

I get your “theme”, but damn that’s one fugly color scheme. Best part is the non-TM headcover! ????

I didn’t see any option for a longer shaft. I have back issues and a 34″-35″ length allows me to practice only for about 5 minutes before the discomfort sets in. All of my putters are 38:-39″ for that reason. The additional few inches of shaft length really helps me to practice for longer period of time.

somebody is laughing all the way to the bank! buildind that putter would probably cost 50-60$ selling it for 420$ is ridiculous! paying that price just means golfer have too much money! bought a cclone of that putter for under 100$ and sure it performs just as well. Sad that mygolfspy encourage that kind of marketing as if 4220$ would make you a better putter.

Appreciate your review but what kind of ridiculous technology goes into a putter to pump up the price to $420? Does guess that price includes a “no three putt” guarantee? Putting is such a feel thing, in my experience it’s yet to be proven that a really really expensive putter allows me to drop more putts. If that were true, one of these would be in my bag right now. But again, it’s all about feel. And in that vein, I don’t feel like I need to spend that much money to drop putts. But if you do, more power to you!

Golf is a sport played by many people with excess cash flow. The putter is about the only club in the bag where it’s design isn’t limited by performance as much as other clubs. In reality, mass produced putters should be the cheapest club in the bag as their construction and manufacturing processes isn’t anything near what is required for other clubs, especially drivers and woods. However, it’s really the only club that can be different in an artistic sort of way. The end result is people collecting putters like crazy and paying any sum for them because they can. People like to be different and the putter is one of the only ways to express that on a course. We’ve seen this before with club head covers and less so, the bag.

I would say putter values will reach a day of reckoning when the people start looking in their closets at the 15 Scotties they have and realize they all look the same and realize there is nothing special about them as the local golf shop now has 15 of them on their indoor practice green. However, the trajectory of putter prices is so steep that the day of reckoning won’t actually make any putter “cheap”. The level of inflation golf equipment value is tremendous and it may continue depending on if any of the new “COVID golfers” stick with the game. If new golfers leave, we could see the bottom fall out of the used market but that is only if people stop thinking a nasty used Scotty Cameron is worth only 10% less than new retail. We haven’t even scratched the surface regarding the number of good fake Scotties floating around out there.

I play golf. I don’t have excess cash flow. I set a golf budget each year & use my money wisely. You’re a fool if you pay only 10% less for a “nasty” scotty putter, you can find a ton of really nice used ones at 2nd Swing for at least 33% marked-down, and discounted more if they’re “nasty” it’s all about where and how you shop.

Won’t let me reply to the person who last replied to you, but (1) why are you so concerned how someone else spends their money? And (2) I suck at golf, but I guess I have “excess cash flow,” so it’s fun for me to make anything more fun and personalized, who cares?

Very cool looking putter Dave, and a perfect headcover, one of the best creative ones I’ve seen.

I used the My Spider X in the spring to create my design, it is much less “shocking” than yours, but has gotten tons great comments, I went with the Royal Blue Body and Black accents. It looks really good.

I found the site pretty easy and straight forward to use as well.

Dave, that putter looks great! I too have been to the TaylorMade site and “played around” a bit, really need to make certain which neck suits my stroke first, but even at current pricing, the multitude of options/choices available for this model are similar to an “off the rack” Cameron Phantom X model.
