The Creator Classic Suffers Its First Dud

When Luke Kwon won the inaugural Creator Classic a year ago, there were more than 118,000 people watching live on the PGA Tour’s YouTube channel as he sunk the winning putt.

This year? Only 27,000 people were streaming live on the Tour’s channel as Brad Dalke claimed the title with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

That dramatic decrease in live viewership underscores how the Creator Classic will have to continue evolving in order to hold our collective attention.

I was a big fan of the first edition we saw in 2024, writing that my impressions were overwhelmingly positive. The format was cool and there seemed to be a lot of positive energy around the event given a star-studded field of creators.

The second showing at TPC Sawgrass, won by Grant Horvat, was also a strong showing. I noted how there were still some tweaks to be made in order to keep things fresh—but the Creator Classic had a solid formula and plenty of buzz.

With the third edition at Philadelphia Cricket Club, the Creator Classic used teams for a creative format that was light on star power but still interesting overall.

The fourth one is the first time you can say the Creator Classic laid an egg.

There was no energy in this one

The field did not include Horvat, the Bryan Bros. or anyone from Bob Does Sports.

That wasn’t a good omen as just 12 players teed it up for individual stroke play. Several players had no shot right from the opening hole, so the competition came down to a few of the top players who have consistently been threats to win these.

Dalke was clearly the best player the whole day and easily won the four-man playoff.

The format was fun last year but didn’t deliver much of anything this year. It raises the question why this event has everyone competing on their own ball with no handicaps. It cuts half the field out of contention immediately.

But the weaker field and boring competition wasn’t the only contributor to the lack of energy. There were very few fans in attendance, which didn’t help. The stream itself seemed to labor as the Tour still insists on having too many cooks in the kitchen when it comes to announcers.

What makes YouTube golf great is that it’s just commentary from the players. I don’t know why the Creator Classic is determined to make this look like any other PGA Tour event when it’s supposed to look like a YouTube golf match.

All we need is one or two announcers. Let the golf speak for itself.

The live streaming aspect can be a benefit when the vibes are good, but it can also be a detriment when things are slower. I think moving to an edited version of the event could be a good decision.

The Creator Classic has been a successful experiment so far, but it can’t keep going to the same well on repeat moving forward. This is not a serious competition. Mix up the format and do whatever is necessary to add some juice.

There was a novelty to the first few editions. That novelty has faded.

What will the next Creator Classic look like? Hopefully something fresh and exciting.

Final leaderboard

For those of you who are interested, here are the final standings from the fourth Creator Classic.

Dalke, Sean Walsh, Micah Morris and Luke Kwon all qualified for the playoff (two current Good Good members and two former Good Good members).

In the end, Dalke was too much for everyone. The former U.S. Amateur runner-up shot 3-under on the nine holes (when you include the playoff birdie), which is impressive given the thick rough and fast greens of East Lake.

He won $100,000 for the victory.

I don’t even watch pro golf, why would I want to watch some trustfund babies getting paid simp money to goof off in front of a camera? Hope this stuff dries up and Bob does sports has to go back to greasing rich parasites in a hotel lobby.

I like to watch a lot of YouTube golf strictly for the entertainment factor alone. I usually look into my favorite’s channels once a week or so and I had no idea this event was even going on. But I also wouldn’t have made it a point to sit down and watch it live streamed either. That’s the beauty of YouTube golf, watch it whenever you want. I agree with the article, release it post-production and let the “creators” release on their own.

They need to make it a similar format to the LIV duels. All the mind games you get to see from Phil, Rahm, Sergio, Poulter etc add a layer of content that we never get to see on the PGA tour. Edit it and streamline it for you tube consumption. Pairing youtubers with PGA stars like the duels format would be great. I can do without the female youtubers. give them their own event or pair them up with LPGA greats and have them use the red tees against a PGA/Youtuber pairing. PGA could also Use some of the Good Good formats like a gauntlet. lets see scotty go through a gauntlet of Garrett, Sean, Micah, Kwon, Dalke. That would be great content. lets see Nelly Korda go through the same gauntlet. there is so much potential for some great content here. PGA creator classic just seems so stiff and lacks imagination. Anyone that says the you tube golfers cant golf clearly isn’t cultured in the you tube golf game. this event being live is just bloated. film and trim then release.

For the first time it was streaming on all the creator’s channels at the same time. I watched on the Good Good channel and there were 15,000 viewers on there alone, so I’m sure they had a lot of total viewers.

I don’t understand why people watch YouTube golfers golf on YouTube or on TV. I don’t want to watch crappy players. I see enough of that when I play with my buddies on the weekend. Our culture loves crap. It’s the only conclusion I can come to.

It’s giving the NOBODYs of the world HOPE that they may one day be in the limelight like this. THAT is the problem with the social media world now.
Somebody at the PGATour was advised that they need to get on the bandwagon of this stuff and make sure the popularity eyes on them, so they invented this silly event

You must get to play with some great players bc most of the YT golf players can play – just not at a pro level. But what makes their shows are their personalities. Something every PGA broadcast totally lacks. Not sure why the PGA can’t solve for that when they produce the Classic

Luke Kwon and the others from taco golf and taco adjacent channels like Sam and tooms are all around +4s. Bryan bros while insufferable have played on the PGA tour. Dalke played in the masters. Grant is also a +4~. Wouldn’t call any of them bad golfers by any stretch of the imagination.

You are a much better player than I am. All the players I watch are scratch or better. Plus they talk about their shots and are pretty funny. I enjoy it. I don’t watch 15’s or above as I agree it wouldn’t be enjoyable.

Besides the PGA Tour channel, Good Good, Sabrina and Gabby (maybe others?) were streaming live on their channels as well. Go ahead and add those up. If you’re a fan of YouTube golf, this was a good event.

Would much rather see an all female event with their ebullient personalities on full display and streaming on their own channels. Cailyn, Alyn, Sabrina, Gabby, Sophia, etc would draw much more attention.

Even 100,000 isn’t that great. YouTube golf isn’t good. It’s like watching reruns. They all do they same stuff over and over again. They piece together clips that make them look good, but they’re all just some single handicap players. Like the guy who wins the club championship every other year at your home course. I don’t see fans lining the men’s league tournaments either

There’s an often-used mantra – “stick to what you’re good at” – and for most of these it’s not golf, it’s entertainment. Peter Finch is a great golfer, but he just can’t seem to get his head in the game when it comes to playing competitive golf and never really has done.

It would have been better if they’d let the individual creators live stream their rounds. The way they’ve been filming these things makes them as bland as tour coverage. Only even watched because Peter Finch had a live stream link on his channel, and frankly would have rather seen every shot of his worst round of the year than what they actually showed.

They are forced to be restricted because of broadcast control rights, they are only allowed to get certain ANGLES, close ups and DETAILS etc because the course, the sponsors and the main TV network for global rights get the say on what can and cannot be done. They don’t want everything completely mic’ed up, they don’t to show every angle of the course and greens and close ups of shots and balls etc, it’s all carefully controlled

Bottom line is that “creator” golfers are simply not very good and many are actually quite irksome, smug and conceited people.
When you are hard to like (naming no names) and not as good as you think you are (naming no names) why would anyone tune in to watch?

You can see better golfers down at your local course.

Naming no names of course but I wonder if that’s why the YouTube channel with the best videography on all of YouTube hasn’t grown at all and I believe shrunk in subscribers while every other YouTube golf channel has blown up ? I’ve been wondering about that for a while

The bottom line is that the best creator golfers were playing the LIV Duels. That stream on Phil’s channel has 500k views.

BDS, Horvat & the Bryan Bros are the best of YouTube golf and none of them were there.
