These 10 YouTube Golf Channels Are Losing Viewers

Yesterday, we took a look at which YouTube golf channels are growing.

Now it’s time for the opposite side of that equation. Which channels are going backwards?

There is a major caveat here in that many of these channels are still very successful. Their viewership numbers are formidable and their content is still worth watching in many ways.

However, something is holding them back from their previous baseline.

In most cases, the culprit is the increased competition of YouTube golf. There are a lot more high-profile channels now compared to five years ago. People only have some much time.

But in some situations, the channel quality has deteriorated.

Sorted by percentage decrease, here are the 10 YouTube golf channels that are losing the most viewers over the past 365 days (relative to the previous year).

Peter Finch

  • Views in the last 365 days: 27 million
  • Percentage decrease: 2 percent

Just a slight decrease here for Finch, one of the more likable personalities in the YouTube golf space. I wouldn’t read too much into it. I think this is more attrition from competition as opposed to a content quality issue.

Danny Maude

  • Views in the last 365 days: 39 million
  • Percentage decrease: 7 percent

There are a few channels on this list that used to have a monopoly in their respective corner of YouTube golf. Maude has always been one of the dominant instruction channels. With so much instruction available now, it’s hard to grow from his previous numbers.

Random Golf Club

  • Views in the last 365 days: 11 million
  • Percentage decrease: 9 percent

The next two channels are niche offerings that are being hit by the YouTube algorithm because they are going for quality over quantity. Random Golf Club has some of the best production values among YouTube golf channels.

No Laying Up

  • Views in the last 365 days: 7 million
  • Percentage decrease: 11 percent

Copy and paste from above. NLU has its core audience but there isn’t a need to chase views. Their goal is storytelling and serving their own fans.

Good Good

  • Views in the last 365 days: 118 million
  • Percentage decrease: 13 percent

Good Good remains one of the goliaths of YouTube golf—and the brand is way more than a YouTube golf channel at this point—but viewership is down. They were one of the only channels doing match and/or challenge videos. Now they are losing out to Grant Horvat, Bryson DeChambeau and others.

PGA Tour

  • Views in the last 365 days: 249 million
  • Percentage decrease: 23 percent

While the Tour isn’t a traditional YouTube golf player, it’s worth noting that they have really struggled to retain viewership. Their overall numbers are high because of a massive database of evergreen videos but the lack of creative original content is concerning.

Rick Shiels

  • Views in the last 365 days: 91 million
  • Percentage decrease: 26 percent

The move to LIV hasn’t panned out so far for Shiels. I think this might be a case of fatigue with Shiels given how long he has been around. At least LIV Duels has been successful.

BustaJack

  • Views in the last 365 days: 8 million
  • Percentage decrease: 34 percent

BustaJack is a smaller match-based channel that doesn’t have anywhere near the production quality as others. It’s still a decent channel but the market is in a tough spot for them.

GM Golf

  • Views in the last 365 days: 39 million
  • Percentage decrease: 35 percent

The activity level on the channel has gone down but it’s still very solid content that is watched at a consistent clip. I tend to like Garrett Clark in this format more than most of Good Good’s videos.

Micah Morris

  • Views in the last 365 days: 9 million
  • Percentage decrease: 50 percent

While Horvat has exploded in popularity after leaving Good Good, Morris hasn’t gained much traction and continues to lose viewers.

Those having a go at Rick for signing with LIV are probably attempting signal their moral rectitude whilst typing their fake outrage on their Chinese made Iphones put together by slave labour.

“Fake outrage” is a bit hyperbolic. I’m disappointed that Rick signed with LIV, and I have unsubscribed. In fact, it’s his own hypocrisy I found to be a turn off. To my recollection, he had been critical of their events since its inception, but then happily, excitedly became an ambassador? But I’m not angry about it. I rarely think about him as I watch vids of Peter Finch, the Average Golfer and St. Andre.

Regarding the iPhone bit, well, smartphones are tools for work as much as anything else. Still, I think about ditching mine—but not for the slave labour bit, I just wouldn’t mind simplifying my life. Besides, spending $1k for a new one just seems like highway robbery.

But I get it. Some people love LIV. I’m just not one of them.

Youtube channels are simply oversaturated and the content has run its race. There’s nothing really new to do, and so many of the content makers are fairly irksome, smug and conceited people and not a single one of them is as good as they think they are. Most clubs up and down the land have several better players.
I simply don’t care WITB of average club golfers on Youtube, and I can’t be bothered to watch yet another pathetic attempt for “a hole in one” or whatever video has already been done ad nauseum.
They are mostly self indulgent, narcissitic, ego massages for the makers lapped up by dreadful sycophants.

Youtube golfers are like comedians, but probably with an even shorter shelf-life.

Rick burned his base with the LIV sell out move. I stopped when he started being hypocritical about it and found better stuff like Iona Stephens chanel and carried on watching Pete get better and better as he’s worked on himself.

I unsubscribed from Rick Shiels as soon as he announced the Liv partnership, I’m not endorsing that sort of thing by continuing to watch his content.

Let’s not underestimate the growing frustration with the increasing frequency and duration of advertisements on YouTube. The current ad placement, occurring approximately every two minutes, significantly disrupts the viewing experience, rendering many videos nearly unwatchable. Even short videos are now interrupted by ads lasting up to a minute, which detracts from user enjoyment and engagement.

Same. I’m sure Rick got paid a ton of money, and that’s great for him and his family. I get it, and I don’t blame him. I’m on Youtube for entertainment, however, and I don’t need to support someone who works for such an oppressive regime so I immediately unsubscribed.

All indices going down for the US. The reality of modern day US is a lot more nuanced. And perceptions are lot worse when you have autocratic wannabe at the helm. The faux outrage from the people about Liv is comical. Pearl clutching nonsense

I’ll put this point up just to drive it home:
      It’s off-season now for golf!!!
May be when the Ryder Cup week happens we’ll see more action and activity from all these channels
but for now, golf is done for the year, officially, the majors are done, summer is gone, everybody is back at school or work.
What the content guys should do is grab some of the Hollywood types who play golf and do content with them. We don’t see much of them any more since they changed the format for Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and I am sure many Hollywood types are also unemployed since many shows are not being made in LA, but elsewhere around the world and if they are not big enough name actors in the A- or B-list higher echelons they ain’t flying out to Europe or Down Under just to do a 2-week stint on a project.
So the viewing may be slightly down for now, but golf season is done, people are more focused on the NFL and MLB for now, waiting on the Ryder Cup and then what? What else in the Autumn and Winter? Play a few with the names from the PGA, LPGA, Euro Tour and LIV Tour who are all on vacation during the off-season. You know for sure dudes like Bryson will be doing more content with many people, as well as all these guys on these other channels.

      I’ll chime in.

-Rick Shiels is the OG and I still watch him and Finch both equally. Very good content.
-Good Good is meant for 12 year old boys and the content was always awful. They’re toast along with GM.
-Micah Morris. Dude is absolute dud of a human and nobody wants to watch him hack it around for 86. He’s done.
-BustaJack. Two mid golfers. Anything else exciting? Nope. Done.
-Grant Horvat. Is putting out good content for the most part but he might be done within 3-4 years.
-Don’t even get me started on anything girl golf related. A bunch of OF models shooting 108? No thanks. Done.

Not surprising. I gave up Rick Shiels cold turkey when he went turncoat and signed with LIV. Given his numbers, I wasn’t the only one. I actually watch Peter Finch more now than I did before ditching Shiels. I also ditched Good Good when Horvath and Morris departed. Only so many hours in the day to watch anything, much less YouTube golf. More likely to watch when there is snow on the ground and not when I can actually go play golf.

It’s pretty ironic to criticise LIV, considering the tour stops that the PGA, WGC and DP World Tour go to, the repressive regime where your golf equipment is made, how those who work in sweatshops to make your cheap apparel get treated etc, US imports of Saudi oil that you’re happy to fill your car up with, who US sell arms to etc.
      Keep polishing the halo.

Sean… the US doesn’t import much oil at all from Saudi Arabia. (4%). Europe, however imports 25% of its total oil usage from Russia. You sure YOUR halo is shiny?

      Sean

First of all, my country doesn’t import ANY oil from Russia, and secondly I’m not the one pretending to be a virtue signalling wonk with fake outrage at Rick Shiels for partnering with LIV. It’s laughable rank hypocrisy to try and take the moral high ground and ignore everything else your country and golf tours do.

I personally couldn’t care less about LIV and who wants to go and sign for them, it’s none of my business, and I’m not going to create some sort of synthetic outrage over it.
I’m just pointing out that placing some sort of personal embargo over a channel is hilarious and hypocritical

If the views still number into the MILLIONS, none of them are worried.
Compare that to the views of major sports, it’s on par with what’s happening in the world, as people have lots of other stuff to do and watch and are OK with Shorts to get a gist of what’s happening and also tend to skip to the major points or the end of videos to see what happened as opposed to sitting through the whole hour of these vids.

I still watch Rick, Peter and love Danny’s lessons. Reviews, opinions and lessons and the occasional rounds with other golfers are entertaining. They’ve been around a decent amount of time and have their formula down. Stale and predictable? Maybe, but I know what I’m getting, like the comfortable slipper. I’ve also been enjoying Ian Fraser and his new channel along with Iona Stephen. Sorry, but the channels like Bob Does Golf, Good Good and others aren’t my cup of tea. I’m a Callaway guy and nothing those influencers say or do will change my purchasing habits. But it is nice to have choices and ignore the ones that don’t suit your tastes.

I think the LIV thing produced a bunch of unexpectedly boring content for Rick. Most of those players just aren’t interesting on camera, and the ones that are had other plans. I’d rather see him goofing off with other YouTube golfers than interviewing boring people, frankly. And it’s absolutely criminal that Peter Finch is losing views, his content is better than ever.

The heck you talking about. Shiels’ content hasn’t changed. He just did his Break 75 with LIV at LIV courses, and his equipment reviews are still the same. He even did some pre and post game commentary at the LIV events as expected, but didn’t put those on his own channel as he has his own programming.
His season also ended when the LIV season ended so it’s not like he’s putting out course content right now, which may have something to do with MOST of these dudes as well as the PGA Tour season ended also.
I am sure they will all have more stuff to show in the Autumn and Winter, but then again, in the US these colder seasons are not for golf but for Helmetball, baseball’s playoffs, and then cherry basket and full-condom gear ice-hockey, after that, correct? While Europe is in the thick of their football seasons, including FIFA World Cup qualifying. Once the baseball season is done, may be all these content guys can grab those baseball players to go do stuff with them.
Some of the LIV type guys can head down South to Australia and South Africa in the winter to catch those major events
