OUR JOB IS YOUR GAME
The most comprehensive mallet putter test of 2022 is complete.
At MyGolfSpy, our job is to provide independent, unbiased and objective testing so you can make more confident purchasing decisions. Our 2022 Most Wanted Mallet test is an indispensable guide for the off-the-rack buyer or for anyone looking for insight before their next fitting.
Let’s take a look at the best mallet putters for 2022.
MOST WANTED SCORING
We have reformulated our 2022 Most Wanted results to a 100-point scoring system. This new system will allow you to better identify golf clubs to potentially help you shoot lower scores.
With Most Wanted Putter testing, we putt an emphasis on one-putts. When you one-putt, you are saving strokes on your overall score.
BEST MALLET PUTTERS OVERALL
The Top of the Board
- PXG Battle Ready Bat Attack, Wilson Infinite Buckingham, Odyssey Eleven Tour Lined S, Scotty Cameron Special Select Flowback 5.0, Toulon Design Memphis

- Right behind it is the Wilson Infinite Buckingham which scored 90 or higher from each distance.
- Odyssey Eleven Tour Lined S continues Odyssey’s strong performances in Most Wanted Putter testing.
- Scotty Cameron Special Select Flowback 5.0 takes fourth with solid scoring from each distance, especially from five feet.
- Toulon Design Memphis wraps up the top five overall. Much like Flowback 5.0, it too excels at five feet.
BEST MALLET PUTTERS FROM FIVE FEET

- The Battle Ready Bat Attack narrowly beats out the Buckingham for Best Mallet from five feet.
- Flowback 5.0, Mezz.1, and Spider GT Rollback all perform exceptionally from five feet as well.
- Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft 11 and Mizuno M Craft OMOI 03 are also worth noting due to their scores from this distance.
BEST MALLET PUTTERS FROM 10 FEET

BEST MALLET PUTTERS FROM 20 FEET

- An exceptional performance from 20 feet made the Buckingham the best mallet from this distance.
- Directed Force posts the second best score from 20 feet. It displayed great distance control throughout testing.
- Once again, Bat Attack rises towards the top part of the leaderboard from a specific distance.
- XXIO Mallet has an impressive performance from 20 feet to place fourth.
- Mati Putters continues its debut by another solid performance from 20 feet. This time by virtue of the Manta.
BUYING CONSIDERATIONS
Length
Typically, stock putters come in either 34- or 35-inch lengths. Length can affect distance and direction. Many golfers find they fit better into putters with shorter shafts. Choose a putter that allows for a relaxed setup based on your address posture.
Loft
The right loft promotes a smooth roll off the face. Too little or too much can cause bouncing, hopping and, ultimately, distance control issues. We recommend working with a professional fitter to determine the right loft for your putting stroke.
Blade or Mallet?
Which is best for you? It’s a combination of personal preference and individual putting stroke. While there are few absolutes in fitting, those with a faster putting stroke often are better suited with lighter blade-putter options. If your stroke is slower and smooth, a heavier mallet might make more of an impact.
Toe Hang
As much as tempo is a factor in choosing the right putter, so too is the amount of arc in your stroke. If you open and close the face more than average, consider a heel-shafted putter with more weight in the toe. Balance the putter on your two index fingers. If the putter head hangs with the toe closer to 6 o’clock, it’s toe-balanced. A face-balanced putter will face the sky. Face-balanced putters are generally well suited for golfers with more of a straight-back, straight-through stroke.
Putter Features
While not quite to the extent of drivers, putters have gone high tech.
It’s not uncommon to find putters with adjustable weighting which, in addition to changing head weight, can alter toe hang to suit either a stronger or less arcing stroke. All Odyssey and Toulon putters offer multi-material Stroke Lab shafts. Evnroll and others offer face-milling patterns or inserts designed to not only promote smooth roll but consistent distance (and, in some cases, direction) on mishits.
Fast Versus Slow Greens
There’s a case to be made for matching the weight of your putter to the speed of the greens you play most often. On slow greens, heavier putters tend to perform better. On fast greens, a delicate touch is needed. Often a lighter putter will produce better results.
BEST MALLET PUTTERS FOR STROKE TYPE
SLIGHT ARC - SCOTTY CAMERON SPECIAL SELECT FLOWBACK 5.0
- A strong performance from 5 feet, coupled by consistent performances from 10 & 20 feet make the Flowback 5.0 the Best Mallet for Slight Arc Stroke Types.
STRONG ARC - WILSON BUCKINGHAM
- Consistency is the name of the game for the Buckingham, which makes it the Best Mallet for Strong Arc Stroke Types.
STRAIGHT BACK-STRAIGHT THROUGH - PXG BATTLE READY BAT ATTACK
- The best mallet from 5 feet, plus impressive results from 10 and 20 feet propel the Bat Attack to being the Best Mallet for Straight Back-Straight Through Stroke Types.
FIELD NOTES
During our research to find the 2022 Most Wanted Mallet Putter, we looked for trends into where the market is moving as well as noteworthy advances manufacturers have made to improve year-over-year performance. Over the course of testing, we solicit feedback from testers. Understanding what they liked, disliked or what they would change is valuable information. However, the subjective feel does not factor into the overall rankings.
Trends and Tweaks
- Similar to the 2022 Most Wanted Blade Putter, COBRA jumps into the mix with 3D-printed components. Additionally, they partnered with Sik Golf. Their COBRA KING 3D Printed Agera and KING Vintage Stingray both utilize the Sik Descending Loft Technology in their faces. It’ll be intriguing to see if this paves the way for more 3D-printed components in years to come.
- L.A.B. Golf’s Lie Angle Balance technology makes for an intriguing putting experience. Through Lie Angle Balance technology, returning the putter face to square at impact is much more likely. Furthermore, it is fitted by lie angle versus the traditional stroke type. Although Directed Force and Mezz.1 aren’t friendly on the eyes for most, the simplicity behind the design might help some.
- Bloodline makes a reappearance in our test with the Vale. Bloodline offers a unique blend of alignment, which is doable by the putter standing on its own. Certainly, an intriguing option.
- With mallet putters, you see more hosel type options versus blade putters. Evnroll is certainly the leader in hosel type options with their V-series, specifically ER11vx. Others, such as, PXG, Odyssey, TaylorMade and COBRA offer various hosel types for their mallet designs.
Notes From The Testing Pool
- Having an appealing combination of feel and looks is a priority for most testers. From our testers’ perspectives, here are the putters that offer great feel and looks: Cobra KING Vintage Stingray, Scotty Cameron Special Select Flowback 5.0, TaylorMade Spider GT Rollback, PING PLD Milled Tyne 4, Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft 11 and PXG Battle Ready Bat Attack.
- Everyone loves a good feel off the face. According to our testers, here are the best putters for feel: Bloodline Vale, L.A.B Golf Directed Force, L.A.B. Golf Mezz.1, Scotty Cameron Special Select Flowback 5.0, Evnroll ER11vx, PXG Battle Ready Bat Attack, Cobra KING 3D Printed Agera, Cobra KING Vintage Stingray, XXIO Mallet, Odyssey Eleven Tour Lined S, Odyssey Eleven Triple Track S and Wilson Infinite Buckingham.

2022 MOST WANTED MALLET PUTTER – BUYING TIPS
GET FITTED
Ninety-five percent of amateur golfers haven’t been fitted for a putter. Would it surprise you to know that most PGA professionals (the guys fitting you for a putter) haven’t been fitted, either? If you’re playing the wrong equipment for your game, you could be costing yourself strokes. Don’t choose a putter just because it looks or feels good. Get fitted for a putter that performs best for YOUR stroke and start making more putts.
FACE TECHNOLOGY
Face technology comes in different forms: variable grooves, face inserts or a more traditional milled face. While face technology varies, it is critical to the putter. The goal is simple: to provide a more consistent result even when your stroke isn’t up to par. Utilize the technology to your advantage and choose the best one that suits your style and desires.
GRIP STYLE
Grips come in various sizes. It often boils down to personal preference. Larger grips may enhance control through the stroke but they may affect feel. A slimmer grip can increase feel but may cause a lack of control. Choose your grip wisely.
FAQ
Buying a Putter
Q: Should I get fitted for a putter?
A: Without a doubt. Don’t just go to the putting corral at your local golf store and choose the putter that feels the best or the one you happen to make a couple of putts with. Do your research, know the facts and take your knowledge to your golf course or store with the intention of being fitted for the right putter for YOUR stroke. Your best chance of finding the best performing putter comes from getting fitted.
Q: How do I find the right length putter for me?
A: An easy test of putter length: Take a comfortable putting stance with a putter. If the putter is too short, it likely it will sit too upright or the heel will be off the ground. If it’s too long, you’ll feel you’re crowding the ball and the toe will be pointing up slightly. Visit a fitter.
Q: What is the price range for a typical putter?
A: Name-brand putters range from $99 to more than $400. Higher-priced models are often 100-per-cent CNC milled but it’s also true that you could be paying a premium for the logo on the putter. Price may always be a factor but don’t assume the best putters are the most expensive.
Most Wanted
Q: How is the Most Wanted Winner determined?
A: Rankings for the 2022 Best Putters are based on a 100-point scoring system. Putters are scored at five, 10 and 20 feet. The individual scores are then aggregated to arrive at the overall score. Scores are weighted such that the 10-foot score has the greatest influence on the cumulative score.
Q: How were the best putters for stroke type determined?
A: At the beginning of the test, each putter is classified by its toe hang/stroke type. The best within each designation are those that finished with the highest overall score with respect to toe hang/stroke type.
Q: How much does subjective feedback like looks, sound and feel factor into your rankings?
A: ZERO. Our rankings are based purely on total putt counts and quantifiable performance metrics. We include subjective notes only because readers have asked for more feedback directly from the testers.

11 months agoI know I need fitting. But where? if most pros providing the fitting haven’t done so themselves, do they know what they are doing?
Ben Strozier
11 months agoIs there any reason the Evnroll Zero wasn’t included? I haven’t seen any news about that putter since the article you released. You might not be able to shed light on the status of the putter but any news would be greatly appreciated.
Brian Parkinson
11 months agoJust went and bought the Buckingham after reading the review. I was lacking a Spider type head anyway. I would say that these rankings do a good job. It is a gamer. Everyone (we have a large putting surface at our office to help us get through the long Idaho winters) who tries it has been impressed. Great feel, awesome grip, easy to align. It’s my second Wilson Infinite putter (armlock Midway). Wilson does a great job – impressed.

11 months agoYou can buy a couple of Wilson putters and still take the wife out to dinner. AND MAKE PUTTS.
Mackie
11 months agoFunny how most of these mallets resemble the spider model(s). I’ll just stick with my spider x and let everyone else pull their hair our trying to find the right copycat for them.
J Thorpe
11 months agoWent for a fitting to find a replacement for my Carbite mallet, circa 1997. The result was that the current putters were no better at a distance of 15-20 ft for first putts. Brass Balls for me and the putter, I guess.
Jason
11 months agoI have the cobra 3d printed grandsport and it has changed my putting game for the best
NC
11 months agoIs the Wilson putter face balanced? I know it is a Spider copy but was not sure about face balance. I think it only comes in only one shaft bend option so was not sure and doesn’t seem to say in several searches I did online.
I play an old Odyssey Milled Collection RSX V-Line Fang putter. Tried manyt times to find something better for me, but just can’t find it.
I just tried the SIK Flo putter… did pretty good for a few days but sold it today! Just wasn’t great for longer putts to me. Might try the Wilson!
I’m not sure I want to drop that much in a PXG putter without anyone around me having one (or pro shops), not to mention the $30 shipping charge (unless that’s changed).
don
11 months agoCan we ask what stimp speeds were the greens the test was done at?
don
11 months agoScores are weighted such that the 10-foot score has the greatest influence on the cumulative score. I don’t agree that should be the case. If you can’t get the ball on line, you can’t make putts, making 5′ more important. If you can’t get the speed correct you can’t make any breaking putts so 20′ is the most important.. All 3 are equal. I miss the data sheet you used to give that showed where every club ranked.
Phillip Bishop
11 months agoOverall scores and scores from each distance are in the article…
Year to year, 10′ is where we see the biggest separation from the best and worst putters.
Bill
10 months agoWilling to bet if you ran yet in back to back days the results would be completely different.
Paul Infanti
11 months agoI have never been fit for a putter because it seems to me that when a putter feels right and performs well to your particular stroke, that should be a good putter to use. However, rolling a few balls at the PGA store is not the way to do it. After determining the kind of stick I am comfortable with, I take demo putters out for a round of golf prior to purchasing. It may not be just as good as a fitting, but I think its very close.
Juanma
11 months agoHow many testerst did the test? Did they practice with each putter before counting putts? Results in this sometimes seems to be “random”.
Phillip Bishop
11 months ago20 Testers. No warm up putts with the putters they’re testing.
don
11 months agono warm up seems like a mistake, after all the 1st putt of the day is not like your 2nd or your 10th putt of the day
Bill
10 months agoSo the first few putters get the awkward warm up strokes. Seems fair
Alan
11 months agoDoes the bottom list of putters contain all that were tested? 2 Odyssey and one Toulon? Should I assume both the Odyssey and Toulon had stroke lab shafts?
Phillip Bishop
11 months agoAll three putters had stroke lab shafts.
Alan
11 months agoWhy weren’t other Odyssey or Toulon putters tested? Difficult for you to claim “BEST” when you leave out over half.
DW Long
11 months agoConverted mallet fan (TM Spyder Pro) from 35 year Anser 2… Tried the Wilson Staff Infinite Buckingham and felt (saw) IMMEDIATE results…!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the new confidence and scores!! Thanks WS..!!
Scott
11 months agoLOVE to see the W/S Buckingham come in at #2. I have the Bucktown (fang design) and absolutely adore it. The W/S Infinite line might be the best value putters across the board. Milled face, jumbo grip, $120.

11 months agoI bought my Wilson Buckingham last June. It’s truly a great putter. The balance is great with a nice firm face.

11 months agoSurprised the Ping Harwood wasn’t tested, it’s been a game changer for me.
Phillip Bishop
11 months agoCheck out 2021 Most Wanted Mallet. It was tested last year.
Peter
11 months agoQuestion for the MGS team on the hosels used. If a putter has more than one hosel option from the manufacturer, were the testers allowed to choose which one they want?
PXG allows you to choose which hosel you want when the putter is being built. I know it comes down to fitting but the question is if each person was “fit” into the putter while doing most wanted the way you fit them when doing the most wanted drivers?
Phillip Bishop
11 months agoHi Peter! We request multiple hosel types if available with the submissions for testing. Then, we do utilize the appropriate hosel type for each tester based on his/her stroke type/tendancy.
Chris R
5 months agoI was revisiting this and interested in the hosel part, the PXG is mentioned as best for straight back/straight through but the fitting options allow for face balanced, mid toe hang, and significant toe hang. Presumably the face balanced modela are *best* for sb/st but without a mention, does that mean the toe hang models are not best for arcs?
Might be an idea for a future test, players with known stroke with different hosel options, see where the differences are
Chris H
11 months agoAnother fine job from Wilson putting out a quality performing product at a reasonable (in this case fantastic) price relative to their competition.
Alex Christiansen
11 months agoI would be interested in knowing which neck was used in the pxg as well. Mid hang, plumbers, heel shafted?
Phillip Bishop
11 months agoEach were available for testing and testers use the most appropriate hosel type that fits their stroke type.
Alex Christiansen
11 months agoThanks!
Trusty Rusty
11 months agoSome of the worst putters I know are people that use a blade putter. They spend a lot of . Of money on a club that they’ll use on every hole and they generally are not that good of putters.. over 60% of professional golfers on the PGA, and a much higher % on the lpga and senior tours use a mallet why any of us would not use. is either ego or stuborness. Great review and well worth read.
Ryan F
11 months agoVery surprised to see the Odyssey Eleven triple track score so poorly from 20′. Triple track putters have won this test in previous years so the alignment aid definitely isn’t “bad” and the Tour lined version of the exact same putter (they’re identical except for alignment aid) scored 21 points higher from 20′. Very odd. Like the driver test this year, this tells me that the results are more about the group of testers than the actual performance of the putter.
Steve S
11 months agoAgreed. The Tommy Armour no. 3 was great for 2 years now it’s middle of the pack.
Bill
10 months agoTest seems to be a complete crap shoot. Another day and it could’ve won
alexandre
11 months agoWhich hosel did you test the PXG with, heel shafted?
WYBob
11 months agoFrom the pictures it appears to be the double bend option. It’s taking top honors in the straight back-straight through stroke category would seem to support this. I only wish PXG would offer the BR Bat Attack in a Center Shafted option.
Jim Hurley
11 months agoIs there an explanation for the difference in performance between the Odyssey 11 Tour Line and Triple Track S other than one is more face balanced and one has toe hang.?
