Best Mallet Putter 2023: Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K Rossie S

Bottom Line

Odyssey mallet putters continue to perform well in our Most Wanted Mallet tests. The Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K Rossie S dominates the field to claim the title of Best Mallet Putter 2023. It excels from 10 and 20 feet so it’s no wonder it earned the top spot.

Technology

Available with a short slant neck the Tri-Hot 5K features multi-material front loaded tungsten weighting design that improves CG (center of gravity) positioning and overall forgiveness. It also features the Odyssey White Hot Face Insert for improved feel and consistency. Finally the dual colour and white dual and triple lines all act as visual alignment aids. With the triple lines being the same width as the Callaway Triple-Track featured golf ball.

Pros

Putting from 10 and 20 feet is where this mallet shines. Ultimately, these are the distances that lead to its massive victory.

Cons

Below average performance from five feet and it rates just average for feel.

Who Is It For?

Since it features toe-hang properties, the Tri-Hot 5K Rossie S will suit golfers with an arcing putting stroke.

Best Mallet Putters 2023 – Buying Considerations

Length

Typically, stock putters come in either 34- or 35-inch lengths. Length can affect distance and direction. Many golfers find they fit better into putters with shorter shafts. Choose a putter that allows for a relaxed setup based on your address posture.

Loft

The right loft promotes a smooth roll off the face. Too little or too much can cause bouncing, hopping and, ultimately, distance control issues. We recommend working with a professional fitter to determine the right loft for your putting stroke.

Best Mallet Putter for Strong Arc

Best Mallet Putter for Strong Arc

Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K Rossie S stands out as the best mallet putter for strong arc putting strokes. Give it a try. It is our definitive best mallet of 2023.

Blade or Mallet?

Which is best for you? It’s a combination of personal preference and individual putting stroke. While there are few absolutes in fitting, those with a faster putting stroke often are better suited with lighter blade-putter options. If your stroke is slower and smooth, a heavier mallet might be preferable. Mallets offer more forgiveness due to their larger mass properties.

Best Mallet Putter for Slight Arc

Best Mallet Putter for Slight Arc

Evnroll EV5 is a unique offering. With multiple variations available to the consumer, it is our recommendation if you have a slight arc putting stroke.

Toe Hang

As much as tempo is a factor in choosing the right putter, so too is the amount of arc in your stroke. If you open and close the face more than average, consider a heel-shafted putter with more weight in the toe. Balance the putter on your two index fingers. If the putter head hangs with the toe closer to 6 o’clock, it’s toe-balanced. A face-balanced putter will face the sky. Face-balanced putters are generally well suited for golfers with more of a straight-back, straight-through stroke.

Or, you can throw toe hang out the window with L.A.B. Golf. They specialize in fitting using “lie angle balance.” Their putter designs adjust to your appropriate lie angle and assist with returning the club face back to square more consistently.

Lie Angle Balance

Lie Angle Balance

L.A.B. Golf continues to gain momentum. Playing professionals are gaming these putters known for their "Lie Angle Balance" technology. To date, L.A.B. Golf's Mezz.1 Max is the best performing model in our Most Wanted Putter testing. Check it out.

Putter Features

While not quite to the extent of drivers, putters have gone high-tech.

It’s not uncommon to find putters with adjustable weighting which, in addition to changing head weight, can alter toe hang to suit either a stronger or less arcing stroke. Odyssey, Toulon, PXG and Cleveland all feature multi-material putter shafts. LA GOLF and L.A.B. Golf offer composite shaft options. Evnroll and others offer face-milling patterns or inserts designed to not only promote smooth roll but consistent distance (and, in some cases, direction) on mishits.

Fast Versus Slow Greens

Best Mallet for Straight Back-Straight Through

Best Mallet for Straight Back-Straight Through

Cleveland continues to impress with its putter selection. Frontline Elite Elevado is our recommendation if you are a straight back-straight through putting stroke type.

There’s a case to be made for matching the weight of your putter to the speed of the greens you play most often. On slow greens, heavier putters tend to perform better. On fast greens, a delicate touch is needed. Often a lighter putter will produce better results.

Best Mallet Putters 2023 – Field Notes

During each test, we look for trends that provide insight about market direction as well as what noteworthy changes manufacturers have made to improve year-over-year performance.

L.A.B. Golf Mezz.1 Max Mallet Putter

We are taking a new approach to tester feedback. As always, it will not play a role in our overall rankings. However, subjective feedback from our testing pool allows us to provide more definitive answers regarding sound, feel, looks and likelihood of purchase. Our testing pool now gives a rating on a scale of 1 to 10 for sound, feel, looks and likelihood of purchase.

Trends

  • Carrying over from our blade putter test, there are several multi-material and composite shafts showing up in putters across the board. It is still a small percentage but it is increasing year to year. Will we reach an era where the traditional steel putter shaft is the exception? Time will tell.
  • Moveable weighting appears in a few mallet putters this year. It is a putter feature that offers value from a fitting perspective, especially if you play on consistent putting surfaces. Finally moveable weights also help with the stability and can aid in optimizing face rotation on putters to improve accuracy.
  • Grip options have become more varied and while SuperStroke grips often come standard, more companies are using their own company branded grips, or custom grips.
  • Hosel or Neck Options – Several putters in testing have the ability to be purchased with different neck options suited for different putting stokes. Some of these options include slant neck, short slant neck, single bend, double bends and plumbers necks.

FAQ

Buying a Mallet Putter

Q: Should I get fitted for a putter?

A: Without a doubt. Don’t just go to the putting corral at your local golf store and choose the putter that feels the best or the one you happen to make a couple of putts with. Do your research, know the facts and take your knowledge to your golf course or store with the intention of being fitted for the right putter for YOUR stroke. Your best chance of finding the best performing putter comes from getting fitted.

Q: How do I find the right length putter for me?

A: Take a comfortable putting stance with a putter. If the putter is too short, it likely it will sit too upright or the heel will be off the ground. If it’s too long, you’ll feel you’re crowding the ball and the toe will be pointing up slightly. Visit a fitter.

Q: What is the price range for a typical putter?

A: Name-brand putters range from $99 to more than $500. Higher-priced models are often 100-per-cent CNC milled but it’s also true that you could be paying a premium for the logo on the putter. Price may always be a factor but don’t assume the best putters are the most expensive.

Most Wanted

Q: How is the Most Wanted Winner determined?

A: Rankings for the Best Mallet Putters 2023 are based on a 100-point scoring system. Putters are scored at five, 10 and 20 feet. The individual scores are then aggregated to arrive at the overall score. Scores are weighted such that the 10-foot score has the greatest influence on the cumulative score.

Q: How were the best putters for stroke type determined?

A: At the beginning of the test, each putter is classified by its toe hang/stroke type. The best within each designation are those that finished highest in overall score with respect to toe hang/stroke type.

Q: How much does subjective feedback like looks, sound and feel factor into your rankings?

A: ZERO. Our rankings are based purely on total putt counts and quantifiable performance metrics. We include subjective notes only because readers have asked for more feedback directly from the testers.

I have looking at mallet putter rankings for 2021, 2022, and 2023. I am surprised not seeing top 5 in following years rankings. Is that because they weren’t tested, the model was discontinued or it just didn’t rank well enough?
In other words, could the top putter in 2021 be rated in top 5 in 2022 or 2023? Feel that I would like a putter that performs well year after year than a one and done.

Check out the M.O.I. of all of these putters. You’ll find that they don’t EVEN reach 6000. It’s like going to a car dealer and seeing corvettes and stingrays along with other hot looking cars all over the lot. You pick your favorite, sit inside and say this is for me. But when they all have volkswagon engines, what’s the difference? Looks, sound, and the name on them doesn’t mean that the ball will go into the hole with one putter more than another. Without MOI, they’re all looks and no performance!

So, the two ball wins the two prior years and you don’t included it in the test…..why? I might assume it’s just to have a new champion but if something wins it needs to be dethroned in a test, not because you used a new metric. Keep up the good work though, you guys are great.

Lately they’re only testing products that came out the current year. It’s why Vokey wedges weren’t tested in 2023 because they were tested in 2022. But they addressed that on social media where they’ll address the current/latest lineup, regardless of the year it was released.

Curious – from last year the PXG mallet was #1 ranked at 94 this year it comes in at 84. For testing year over year do you do anything to balance it out? Now I do not use the PXG, I use a blade – but curious about the variation year over year and have you thought about it at all?

I think testing should be grouped : toe hang, or face balanced. I putt with no or virtually no arc. I am only interested in face balanced putters. Does anybody else think that mixing the ‘hang” types all together does not make sense?

Can you explain your scoring system? From 5 feet, is that just the % made? But for the other longer distances, some adder/multiplier? I want to test a few of my putters at home in a similar manner. Thanks!

I would never buy a putter that was poor 5 feet out. Heck those are the ones I miss the most and if I made them I’d play in the upper 70’s

Me either. I also don’t understand why putts from 10 feet are weighted more heavily than putts from 5 feet for scoring.

You guys should do an article on putter swingweight one of these days. These readings are insane. Some of those putters must feel like sledgehammers.

Glad you include prior year “Most Wanted” in your pool for reference. However I am surprised the Bat Attack dropped so markedly in the 5ft range from 98.2 (top in 2022) to 89.3 in 2023. Look forward to My Golf Spy results to narrow down equipment choices. Not sure if results that vary this much (20+ ft even more significant) give us enough data to make informed decisions. Supports the suggestion we should all get fitted to find what’s best for us.

Interesting that we are supposed to believe that the mallet that won last year is not even in the top 10 best this year yet Tiger Woods still uses the same putter from 20 years ago. If the results between years are not replicable then they are invalidated by the next years test which begs the question are any of them valid. PXG bat attack 1st in 2022, 12th in 2023…

100% agree! The only thing consistent with these tests are the inconsistent results.. This year we had a bunch of guys who putted the best with this putter. Next year it will be a completely different test group.

Completely agree. This is the first time I’ve really gone through the yearly rankings, and given the crazy swings in how an identical putter “performs” in 2022 vs. 2023 I’m not sure why anyone would take them seriously. Really weird to see.

Glad to see the Most Wanted now includes objective test results as well as subjective tester feedback. Based on reading the entire article the winner looks like the Evnroll EV5 which finished strong on the test results and won Best Slight Arc, Best Feel and Most Likely to Purchase. I look forward to testing the Odyssey Tri Hot 5K Rossie S and the Evnroll EV5. Thanks MGS.

My goodness it must be tough to put 100+ hours of work into this and just get a stream of crying complaints these comment sections have become…

No their methodology is not perfect and never will be as with any form of research, especially around this topic with hundreds of variables that are nearly impossible to entirely account for. But the golf community is better off having these unbiased reviews as guideposts over nothing at all. As stated in the FAQ, these scores are one input of many that will help you find the best clubs specifically for you, not the end all be all for everyone.

Anyways, thanks MGS team for the great work as always. Cool to see a LAB putter finally crack the top 3 this year.

It seems like the criticism is that the scoring seems subjective and random, arguably to the point that it ends up actually *being* biased/misleading without meaning to be.

Like…how is it possible that 2022’s #1 mallet putter turned into a mediocre pumpkin in 2023 without any changes being made to the putter itself? If something changed about the putter then fine, that is absolutely worth noting. But if it’s just the same putter being scored far lower by different people, that is so random that it’s arguably *worse* than nothing, because it actively misleads people. Seriously: if you’re motivated by this list to try/buy 2023’s “number one putter”…is it actually worth your time, or are their testers going to come back in 2024 and tell you that you spend your money on a piece of garbage? Just makes no sense.

Seems like putts made would be the most important criteria and since nobody makes 20 footers that should not weigh in as important as five footers. Great data collection. But most of it is over rated.

Agreed, fewest total putts from 20′ is kind of silly. From 20’+ making putts has too much luck involved, what we want is inside 2′ tap ins. Inside 5′ all I care about is how many go in.

Love the article, look forward to it every year. It seems like less and less of these putters are being made available to lefties. I’d love to roll a Rossie S or Evnroll EV12. But alas, they are not available to us… perhaps a lefty only most wanted putter article next year?

The struggle is real. I love messing around with new putters at the shop, but as a lefty, most of the interesting new models aren’t available. I still try them righty with a left hand low grip, but it’s an ever-present frustration. It’s like trying to find the one left handed desk in a college lecture hall all over again!

I know you may think the disabled don’t care about golf so you don’t need to worry if your website is accessible to them or not, but they do.! I work in the accessibility field and find that your web site is exceedingly inaccessible! Not only is this relegating us to a second class state, but you are also non-compliant with the American Disabilities Act of 1992. Please take this seriously as the disabled do play golf or want to follow it online. Please let the developer of your web site know that you care about accessibility and get it resolved.

Wow, last year’s overall-winning PXG dropped over 30 points in the 20 foot range. Goes to show how difficult it is to get the same results from one testing pool to the next.

You and I made the same comment at the same time. I was looking to make a move on a new putter this year and was at a PXG store this past weekend and liked the Bat Attack, along with a few blade putters (that surprised me) but was curious how the Bat Attack could score so poorly against itself in two consecutive years.

Enthusiasm. The testers all knew it was not a new model so they flapped at the putts wit it because they didn’t care as much this time as some of the other new models lol

The PXG Bat Attack scored much lower in this year’s evaluation than last year. I understand that any given putter’s position might change in the overall ranking based on newer products coming into the market, but I was surprised to see the scores for this putter drop so much this year when compared to itself in last year’s ratings.

I cannot believe that the EDEL putters go ZERO consideration in your evaluation. Over the course of almost 50 years I have tried most putters including a lot of earlier models no longer around. I purchased my EAS putter in 2021 and have found it to be the best mallet putter I have ever tried.

That’s weird, I was unaware that Edel had a 2022-2023 release, which would make it pertinent to a 2023 Putter article.

They must have kept it super low key. That, or it’s not relevant to this discussion because they didn’t actually release one…

I’ve been using an Odessy mallet putter from a few years back and I really like it. I bought it for better alignment like the two ball Odessy. My only gripe is the toe hang feature which sometimes gets me during those 5 foot putts. I need the accuracy from 20 feet out so, I make a slight adjustment to my stroke for those finishing putts. Odessy putters are on a role the last 5 years.

Where are the Axis 1 Rose putters? Didn’t you test any of them? It would hardly seem fair to exclude them from testing. After watching Justin Rose putt with one of these I’m very surprised more tour players aren’t using one.
