Short Game Golf Ball Spin Chart (Which Spins Most and Least?)

When it comes to scoring, wedge spin is one of the most revealing stats in golf ball testing. A ball that spins more on wedge shots provides extra stopping power and control on approach and short shots. But not every cover (even the urethane ones) delivers the same performance and this year’s 2025 MyGolfSpy Golf Ball Test presented by UNRL proved spin differences are wider than many golfers realize.

Callaway Chrome Tour X topped the charts for spin. Surprisingly, balls like the Tour Soft and Kirkland Performance+ posted tour-level spin despite their lower price points.

At the opposite end, distance-focused models such as Callaway Supersoft, TaylorMade Tour Response and Vice Pro Plus offered far less spin on full swing wedge shots.

TaylorMade TP5 and Bridgestone TOUR B XS led the pack for 35-yard wedge spin, holding over 5,900 rpm and maintaining consistency across partial shots. The Wilson Staff Model X and Chrome Tour X followed closely. Value options like Maxfli Tour X again punched above its price point, offering short-game spin numbers not far from tour-level performance.

At the other end, balls such as Callaway Supersoft, TaylorMade SpeedSoft and Titleist Velocity produced significantly lower spin. The decision for golfers comes down to high-spin urethane for precision and stopping power or ionomer-covered designs for added launch and rollout.

Final thoughts

The 2025 MyGolfSpy Ball Test shows how much your golf ball matters. Some balls spin and stop, others launch higher and roll out more. If you want control around the greens, urethane models are still the clear choice.

Great info. At what point does the spin rates start to show an observable impact on results for the 35-yard pitch? Differences between 1,000 or 2,000 or more? These numbers are quoted revolutions per minute. So a 35-yard pitch, 2-3 seconds in the air maybe? I can’t imagine the top 10 balls having any noticeable difference on course. Curious when it would start. Thanks!

Spin is important to determine which ball will stop the quickest. But so is angle of descent. Part of the story is missing.

Really would have liked to see some driver/iron spin data. Is that in the works?

It’s available on their website page. They have a few different databases you can filter for balls and clubs and swing speed. This is just a recap.

Have you folks tested the OnCore Vero 1X at all? I don’t recall seeing any results for that ball.
