Top 20 Putters For Reducing Three-Putts

In our 2024 Best Golf Putter testing, we evaluated the performance of putters from three key distances: five, 10 and 20 feet. To determine the best overall putters, we weighted the scores as follows: 55 percent from 10 feet, 25 percent from five feet and 20 percent from 20 feet.

Our proprietary metric, “Putt Score,” tracks the number of one-putts, two-putts and three-putts testers achieve with each putter at these distances. We use the Putt Score metric to rank putters.

If you struggle with three-putting, the root issue often is that your first putt doesn’t get close enough to the hole, leaving you with too much left on your second putt. To identify the best putters for reducing three-putts, we focused on putters (both blades and mallets) with the best performance from 20 feet.

If long putts keep you from scoring lower, explore our Top 10 Blades and Top 10 Mallets rankings for reducing three-putts.

Best blade putters from 20 feet

The Cleveland HB Soft 2 #1 is the best blade putter from 20 feet and the best-value putter in the entire blade putter testing. One thing that helps the HB Soft shine is its consistent performance across the board. Even though it was the best from 20 feet, it also did quite well from five and 10 feet. The Cleveland HB Soft 2 #1 placed sixth overall in the testing and is priced at $149.99.

Testers liked the traditional look and the putter’s feedback, especially if you miss the center of the face. Most importantly, for golfers trying to reduce three putts, one tester said, “distance control is definitely there with this putter. I didn’t struggle with distance control.”

If you can handle a no-frills, classic blade-style putter for a fair price, the HB Soft 2 #1 is likely your best overall choice.

Here are nine additional putters that performed well from longer distances. If you feel like it’s the long putt and the tap-ins that cause you to have more than three putts, look at the Teardrop TD-1. Its performance from both 20 and five feet was really strong.

Best mallet putters from 20 feet

The best mallet putter from 20 feet is the Bettinardi INOVAI 6.0. It’s also the best overall mallet putter of 2024 and the best from 10 feet. Essentially, the Bettinardi INOVAI 6.0 dominated the mallet putting test. Testers said it was a great choice for sound and feel.

As great as the INOVAI was for sound and feel, some testers were unsure about its looks. One tester said, “definitely an interesting, fang-style mallet, which won’t appeal to some golfers. However, the performance speaks for itself.”

Other top mallet putters from 20 feet

If you struggle with both long and short putts, make sure to consider the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K Rossie S, Zebra Milled Series 002 and the TaylorMade Spider Tour V3. These putters performed well from both 20 and five feet.

This is all from the testing in March. Odyssey and PXG had not released their putters yet and LAB only did middle of the pack results.

Putters are a funny one to test in a group setting since models like the LAB are very customized to each person. Some model of putters just sit better for some people (off the rack) than others.
