First Versus Worst: Launch Monitors

We evaluated 14 launch monitors for our Best Personal Launch Monitors testing this year. We analyzed their performance indoors and outdoors and for things like accuracy and value. There are certainly differences between the highest-ranking and lowest-ranking launch monitors of 2024, especially when looking at accuracy. The Garmin Approach R50 is the best overall launch of 2024 and the SwingLogic SLX Hybrid Mini is the worst.

Accuracy

We measure accuracy in launch monitors by looking at how they compare to industry standard equipment. We do this to establish a baseline by which we can measure the accuracy of each machine tested (indoors and outdoors).

For indoor data compared to the Foresight GC4, the Garmin R50 is within 1.5 percent of the ball speed number each time. The SLX Mini is within 3.5 percent. We notice similar differences in carry distance indoors. However, the real difference is with the spin rate. The SLX Mini is nearly 30 percent less accurate for spin rate readings than the R50.

Outdoors, the Hybrid Pro Mini did a little better in terms of carry distance and spin rate. However, the ball speed numbers were considerably off. The point is that the R50 is more expensive because it’s more accurate. Spending more money to get better accuracy is generally accepted when you shop for launch monitors.

Value

The Gamin Approach R50 is $4,999. The SwingLogic SLX Hybrid Mini usually priced around $199. The Garmin Approach R50 is a hugely different investment but, again, you are getting two entirely different products. The Garmin Approach R50 is a complete launch monitor and simulator package in one unit.

If you want to golf in the off-season and take your game to the next level without ever having to go to the golf course, this is the launch monitor you will want. If your goal is to save money and get basic data about your game, the SwingLogic SLX Hybrid Mini will suffice.

Features

The Garmin Approach R50 is a much different piece of technology than the SwingLogic so the data collected will be considerably different. Here’s a quick look at the basic features and their differences.

Bottom line

The Garmin R50 is very accurate and is a stand-alone simulator for use indoors and outdoors. The score we gave the R50 was 9.9/10 but the SLX Hybrid Mini from SwingLogic was not far behind at 9.2. The SwingLogic SLX Hybrid Mini has plenty of great things going for it at this price point but it’s a basic model.

Swing Logic has another launch monitor we included in our testing: the SwingLogic SLX Hybrid Pro. It’s priced a little higher at $299 but we named it the best-value launch monitor of 2024.

Cannot imagine a worse looking or less usable budget launch monitor than the SLX hybrid mini you have shown. Much better options are the VoiceCaddie/Swing Caddie series SC200 (easily fits in a bag, voice reporting of carry, has a remote to change clubs, large LCD display, does not require an app or cellphone) thru 300i series or the Rapsodo MLM .

Do you reccomend a particular launch monitor that is used specifically for the driving range and doesnt require fancy golf balls? Considering Garmin R10 or MLM.
