Top 5 Best Golf Wedges For Spin

What good is a golf wedge if it doesn’t spin? A new wedge means ensuring you have distance control, spin and the look and feel you need to perform around the green. When we did our 2024 Best Golf Wedge testing, we tested 26 wedges. We test spin by looking at full swing spin, 50-yard dry spin, 50-yard wet spin and dry versus wet spin retention. These are the top five best golf wedges for spin in 2024.

PING s159

Who Is It For?

Golfers who want performance in all conditions: PING excels in wet conditions and even produces more spin when moisture is present.

Players who also want accuracy and consistency. Spin is not the only factor that matters in golf wedge testing. The PING s159 is also accurate and consistent.

Who Is It Not For?

You dislike PING: If you’ve got something against PING, then that’s the only reason not to consider putting the PING s159 in your bag.

Why Buy

In addition to being the best wedge for spin, the PING s159 is also the best wedge for 2024. It ranks fifth for accuracy, third for consistency and best for spin. PING wedges have performed well in wet conditions for the last few years. In fact, their spin is often higher in wet conditions than in dry.

If you struggle to develop spin in short-game shots, the PING s159 gives you the best chance at controlling the golf ball. Subjectively, this is one of the better PING wedges we have tested in quite some time. One tester said, “Pleasantly surprised. I’ve hit them before, but these are much better. They’ve improved their wedge game.”

Score: 9.6

Cleveland RTX Full-Face 2

Who Is It For?

Players who need spin. Similar to PING, the Cleveland RTX Full-Face 2 produces more spin wet than when dry.

Anyone looking for a clean profile. Testers considered this to be a clean-looking wedge.

Who Is It Not For?

Golfers who need maximum accuracy: The Strokes Gained results from the Cleveland RTX Full-Face 2 testing were not strong.

Players concerned with consistency: If you need consistency in carry distance and dispersion, this may not be the best wedge in the test.

Why Buy

The Cleveland RTX Full-Face 2 is the second-best wedge for spin. Like the PING s159, the spin rates in wet conditions were just as strong (and sometimes stronger) than in dry conditions. The RTX Full-Face is did not have the best accuracy or consistency.

If you are going to choose this wedge because of its spin, make sure you get fitted for it first to ensure it has the proper accuracy and consistency that you need. Some testers didn’t like the full-face design but that is a personal preference.

Score: 9.5

Cleveland CBX4 ZipCore

Cleveland CBX 4 ZipCore wedges

Who Is It For?

Golfers who want to spin the ball more on short shots. The Cleveland CBX4 Zip Core is built to be accommodating for higher handicappers but it has great spin capability.

Anyone looking for a more confidence-inspiring look. Most of the best wedges for spin have more of a sleek blade-style look while the CBX4 Zip Core has a slightly thicker look to it.

Who Is It Not For?

Anyone looking for extra consistency: Ranked 18th overall for consistency, the forgiveness in this wedge and the repeatability of results isn’t great.

Players looking for a clean top-down look: The top-down look on the CBX4 Zip Core is a little thicker so if you want the clean-looking blade-style, maybe look elsewhere.

Why Buy

The Cleveland CBX4 ZipCore finished just behind the Cleveland RTX Full-Face 2 regarding spin rates. The accuracy and consistency metrics were slightly better. This CBX4 ZipCore finished 11th overall in the test compared to a 19th-overall finish for the RTX Full-Face 2. It’s a popular wedge among golfers cautious about a thin-blade style wedge.

Cleveland CBX Full-Face 2

Cleveland CBX Full Face 2 Wedge Review

Who Is It For?

Players who want lots of spin. Ranked fourth overall for spin, the CBX Full-Face 2 spins well from dry or wet conditions.

Golfers looking for all-around strong performance. With a fifth overall finish, this is the strongest Cleveland wedge in the 2024 test.

Who Is It Not For?

Golfers looking for consistency: With an 11th-place finish for consistency, there are better options if consistency is your main concern.

❌ Anyone who does not like full-face designs: If you struggle with the look or performance of the full-face design in a wedge, skip this Cleveland CBX Full-Face 2.

Why Buy

Yes, Cleveland made the second-, third- and fourth-place golf wedges for spin in 2024. Whether in wet or dry conditions, the Cleveland wedges stand out. Of the best Cleveland wedges for spin, the Cleveland CBX Full-Face 2 performed the best in the overall test, finishing fifth.

Even though the CBX Full Face-2 was fourth overall for spin, it was 10th for accuracy and 11th for consistency, giving it a fifth-place finish in the test. If you are looking for an all-around strong performer (with a focus on the spin category), the Cleveland CBX Full-Face 2 is a great option.

COBRA Snakebite

COBRA Snakebite Wedge Review

Who Is It For?

Players who want extra spin around the greens. The COBRA Snakebite had high spin rates from a wide range of areas around the green.

Golfers looking for more consistency. The Snakebite earned a top-five finish for best golf wedges for consistency in addition to its strong spin performance.

Who Is It Not For?

Golfers looking for accuracy: Overall, the Strokes Gained performance of the COBRA Snakebite left it in the bottom half of the test.

❌ Golfers who are particular about sound, looks and feel: Subjective rankings for the Snakebite have never been that strong from testers.

Why Buy

In the 5th place spot for best wedges for spin, we’ve moved to the COBRA Snakebite. This wedge finished 13th overall and had a fifth-place finish for the best wedge for spin.

The COBRA Snakebite was a very consistent wedge, with performance ranked fourth for consistency. The problem testers had with the COBRA Snakebite was its accuracy. It finished 19th overall for accuracy. We measure accuracy by Strokes Gained. If you are purchasing a wedge to make sure you save some strokes, make sure to get fitted for the COBRA Snakebite.

have you ever reviewed wedges for getting out of bunkers? As in “best wedge for getting out of greenside bunkers”

That’s more about the correct set-up and the right selection of the suitable bounce, grind combination for the bunkers you play on your course. Deep fluffy sand needs a totally different set-up and Bounce selection as for example hard pan bunkers with little sand and adding your individual swing certain grinds would work better than others. Therefore I can’t see a „best out of the bunker“ wedge test. Unless you would test them in all the different conditions etc.
