Asked On Reddit: What’s The Biggest Money Waster In Golf?

Golf isn’t cheap. Between gear, green fees and all the stuff that marketers swear will lower your handicap, it can get expensive fast. Some of the golf expenses are worth your money but others become money-wasters. We found the question, “What’s the biggest money waster in golf?” asked on Reddit, and here is what golfers had to say.

Golf balls (Especially Pro V1s)

This one came up repeatedly. If you’re new or high-handicap golfer Redditors say buying a dozen premium balls like Pro V1s for $50-plus is just wasting your money. I think it comes down to what matters to you. When you see ball test results and golf balls travelling 10 or more yards less than others, it’s hard to say that money spent on golf balls doesn’t matter at all. Maybe there’s a balance to be found here.

Newly released golf clubs

Buying the latest driver or iron set at full retail was another top pick for wasteful spending. Redditors pointed out that club technology doesn’t change much year to year, and used gear offers 90–95 percent of the performance at half the price. Some pointed out that no club will fix your swing; lessons will. Of course, there were others that decided lessons were a complete waste of money, so you’ll have to figure that one out.

Fancy apparel

The $120 hoodies and $80 polos may look good, but Reddit golfers questioned whether they do anything for your game. Many suggested shopping at Walmart, Kohl’s or eBay and saving the expensive gear for special occasions. A few users admitted they splurged on one item, usually a hoodie or jacket, but said it had to earn its keep on and off the course.

Cart fees

If you want to cut golf costs fast, stop riding. Dozens of Redditors shared that walking saved them hundreds (or even thousands) per year. Plus, many said walking helps them focus more and keeps their game sharper.

Range balls without a purpose

Hitting range balls can be helpful, but only if you’re working on something. Redditors warned that aimless range sessions are one of the most overlooked money pits in golf. Reinforcing bad habits doesn’t help, and it doesn’t justify the bucket price, which has only gotten more expensive through the years.

Club covers

Some people love custom headcovers. Redditors say they are a complete waste of money. Multiple users roasted $300 “limited-release” covers. I also saw that people had very little patience for alignment stick covers and iron covers. The only exception was a sentimental cover, but one is enough.

Rangefinders

High-end rangefinders are cool but not always necessary, according to Reddit. Most of this came down to a beginner versus an experienced player debate. Several Redditors said beginners don’t need them since they’re not hitting consistent distances anyway. Walking off yardages or using course markers is plenty until your game tightens up.

One said, “If you’re new, just aim for the center of the green.”

Overpriced drinks and snacks

The cart girl made multiple appearances in this thread, not because of the service, but because of the price tag. Drinks and snacks can easily cost more than the round if you’re not paying attention. A soft cooler and a little planning go a long way.

One of the more popular comments was “I can fit 12 beers in my bag. That’s the real savings.”

Lessons?

This one was divisive. Some golfers poked fun at the idea of lessons. They blamed bad shots on clubs, but the majority of serious players said lessons with follow-up practice were worth every penny they spent.

Green fees add up fast

While not as “frivolous” as alignment stick covers, green fees were consistently mentioned as the biggest total expense over time. Redditors recommended finding memberships, twilight rates, discount cards or local deals to cut the long-term cost.

Final thoughts

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion on what’s worth spending money on in golf. There are two things I’ve always found to be a waste of money. The first is taking lessons without practicing. It’s like going to the dentist twice a year but never brushing your teeth.

The second is beginner boxed sets. They look like a deal, but if you’re serious about learning the game, you’ll outgrow them fast. A decent used set will take you a lot farther. It all depends on your goals in the game.

That said, one thing that’s never felt like a waste to me was finding a golf ball that works for my game, so I’ll have to disagree with Reddit on that.

I feel range finders are almost useless since a lot of courses have GPS on the carts now. My league partner is on finder #3 currently, and I’m pretty good about telling him the distance just by line of sight. He’ll shit it and I’ll go 171 playing up 175, he’ll look at me and say no playing 173. Then, I am him what hits happy are between clubs and he shuts up.

Brand labels are obviously ridiculous, but who and why established the standard into the conscience of the world that it’s ok to pay stupid prices for crappy made in China baseball caps??? I refuse to pay for than $20 for one, and I just get previous seasons or other cheap ones from the internet.

The biggest waste of money in golf is impulse purchases without fittings! You have a bad putting day, I mean I missed 5 putts from just 10-15 feet… I need a new putter. I’m going to go on Ebay and get a LAB putter for just $600. LOL, the pros miss about 70% from those distances. I suck at hitting my six iron I need a better one! Joe hits his really well I need a PXG gen 11 six iron like Joe’s. Never mind that Joe is a 4 handicap and I’m a 24 handicap. Bob you’re killing that new, insert brand, driver can I try it. Sure. You hit one good drive with a drive custom fit to Bob in the fairway and you get all Bobs specs from the driver and shaft and go buy one that afternoon spend $1000 like Bob and hit it just as bad as the old one you bought off the rack.

Each of these things has happened with friends of mine in the last year.
I made these up but I have a buddy that

Those are the BIGGEST WASTES OF MONEY IN GOLF THAT I SEE!!!

I have one buddy that has played 5 rounds with me this year. He has had two different Drivers, the same as mine, then the same as his brother’s. He has had a Scotty putter $400, a Bettinardi $500, a Swag putter $1000, Lab Putter $650 and a second Swag putter $1000. He has different Swag head covers each round that match his outfit. When we played a couple weeks ago he told me he had only played 6 round this year. He has spent at least $12,000 on golf this year in clubs and membership. He has only played 6 rounds. He is a great friend and has plenty of money to waste… He has a serious waste issue! WITB Callaway Elly tri diamond with a TPT shaft, Same fairways in 4 and 7 and 5 hybrid all with TPT shafts. Miura CB 302 black with LA golf shafts. Vokey 50* s, 54* d and 60* t. Swag Putter. Handicap 22 was a 15 last year.

Three things to keep in mind when golfing…..(1) WHERE you played, (2) HOW WELL you played, and (3) WHO you played with.
      The first two don’t matter.

Golf itself is a waste of money, but I play it 4 times a week. Think about it, chasing a ball around the yard to get it into a hole and we pay lots of money to do it. That being said if you have a budget of 1000 dollars for golf equipment it is probably better to buy last years or even 2 years ago club model and use unblemished balls you find on the course and use the rest of the budget on lessons. Lessons will make you better than fancy clubs

Alignment sticks, hitting and swinging devices. A yardstick cost 49 cents. Lead weight tape is more customizable and cheap, to build stronger swing muscles etc. “Golf My Way” by Jack Nicklaus is the opposite. The BEST BUY in golf. Not the “fifty tips”, the print is too tiny to read.

Another cheap training aid, buy a beat up wedge and add 1 or 2 inches to the shaft. It moves the swing weight about 1 whole letter, from a D to an E. Builds up all the muscles in your swing.

Good points. Harvey Penick in his Little Red Book, said that the best swing aid out there was the old-fashioned, weed wacker, scythe style implement, with the blade. He said a famous teacher once came up to him and asked him to keep that quiet because general knowledge of that would put him out of business. I bought one and he’s right. Without going into detail, there is a reason why retired hockey players are such good golfers in my opinion. The hockey stick is kind of like a long weed whacker. Check it out.

Where I live it is actually illegal to bring alcohol to a course, State Alcohol Beverage Control laws. Every course has signs that say No Outside Alcohol and No Personal Coolers. Some courses strictly enforce these rules, to the point of asking to open your bag if they suspect you of having drinks, others do not and you can walk right up with a personal cooler and nothing is said. I drink 4 to 6 beers a round, I am a regular beer drinker and this does not get me drunk, over 4.5 hours not even buzzed. I would have no problem buying my beers from the course if the prices were even somewhat reasonable. I am in a club and we rotate about 15 different courses per year, prices for a light beer range from $4 to $6, why would I pay this if I can get beers for less than a dollar a piece at the grocery store. If courses stopped charging bar prices they would sell a lot more beer and people would stop sneaking beer, which is actually a liability for the course.

We can probably all find some reason to agree or disagree with more than one of the items listed, but when considering “waste” I would offer up that, in general, reading “Reddit” threads is probably a bigger waste to the whole of society than buying a dozen ProV1s and dumping them in a pond is to any of a dozen golfers. In my admittedly limited experience, whenever a web search for something has led me to a link to a Reddit thread, the majority of those threads have been overwhelmingly subjective opinions, rather than objective data.
Perfect example is the numerous testing and databased articles on MGS that address the benefit of even the newest amateur selecting the correct ball that ensures they lose fewer of them.
But this is just MY opinion, based on the value I place on my time reading and responding to strange articles on MGS rather than trolling Reddit ;D

This feels like weak content for MGS. The list seems wildly off for someone that actually plays golf — these aren’t “money wasters” for golfers, they’re ways to save a few bucks here and there, multiple of them focused on beginners (some of these things are necessary expenses to play the game). And if the whole theme is money wasting, why are you including PGATSS links to purchase those exact items (with the exception of headcovers – they’re not referring to what you get at PGATSS)?

Never regretted buying good golf balls (and even though it’s noted as regrettable) – certain balls, yes, but not ProV1, TP5, etc. Rangefinders speed up play compared to the noted alternative of walking off distances, which beginners don’t even know how to do (even for the “aim for the middle”, you need a number first, so GPS over Rangefinder). Overpriced drinks? BYOB is against most courses’ policies, and in some cases illegal, so why are we even noting it as an option in an MGS article?

Most of these items are common sense. I have a golf partner who uses and loses about 6-7 Pro V’s a round. Should be he be wasting his money on them? It is his money so that’s on him although he chases after any errant shot like a maniac thinking people are out to steal them. I personally could care less what people spend money and it’s the same in any facet of life. Does anyone need a Porsche 911? Does a family of 4 need a 12 bedroom house? Absolutely not, but it’s their money.

I am at a private club outside Atlanta, and would like to save money by walking, but they charge $25 whether you walk or ride, and for either 9 or 18 holes. They call it an ” access fee”. I say the “access fee” is the $500 I pay in monthly dues to be able to play there, and that I should be able to walk, especially late in the afternoon, without that fee…. I’m wondering if other private clubs are doing this as well?

While not really expensive alignment sticks especially those “for golf” are idiotic, first you have 13 other sticks in your bag, or old broken shafts, or go to the hardware store and buy a $2 driveway marker.

Lessons are a waste unless you are lucky enough to have a skilled instructor nearby. I work in the ski industry and know firsthand just how incompetent most ski instructors are, and I can only assume it is the same in golf. I have also overheard horrible advice being given by a supposed professional while I have been at the range. So the issue is, can you trust that you are not just throwing your money away if you take lessons? It’s too big of a gamble for me, I’ll just keep trying to dig it out of the dirt.

A person can go on PGA.com and find a skilled pro for lessons. I’m a 12 handicap, took one lesson, and my PTO determined I was having a set up issue. Changed one thing and it’s made a world of difference. Playing better after one 1.5 hour lesson.

I disagree, depending on your area. All beginners have have to is research the teaching pros in their area. Call and ask if they work with beginners. Many teachers only learn how to teach a certain skill level.

If you’re an experienced golfer, with a muscle memory swing, research what swing theories are in your area. I’ve had teachers that work, and ones that don’t work with my swing path.

We try so hard to be exclusionary in this sport. I hate to see it. Some people buy expensive headcovers because they collect them or they just bring them joy. Other collect coins or stamps or do expensive meals. Rangefinders are a waste for beginners and they can pace of yardage but then people complain about them being slow. I don’t drink much at the course but some days – you know the ones – a transfusion or mule feels like a necessity. I personally agree on new line clubs – I have a rotating cast of used stuff, even from current year I tinker with – and whacking range balls without a plan but maybe those things make someone happy. I dunno. Let’s just love the game however people come to it, be courteous and have fun.

I agree, value is individual. There is a saying that, “One man’s junk is another’s treasure.” That axiom probably applies to some degree here. If you are just looking to get outside with friends and have no desire to improve, lessons are a “waste of money;” if you are looking to improve, there is no substitute (especially YouTube since the base amateur has no idea what they are doing correct or wrong so using YouTube videos could just as easily offer “drills” that have nothing to do with fixing problems). You do you. It may help to get some advice on where to focus, but the value of that advice is individual.
      Cheers
