2023 MyGolfSpy Ball Test Survey

Planning is well underway for the 2023 MyGolfSpy ball test. We’ll have more details to share in the near future but the summary version is that it will be our biggest ball test to date.

We’ll again test balls with drivers and irons at three different swing speeds. We’ll also be doing a greenside spin test.

If time permits, we’ve got ideas for additional tests as well.

What makes this test different from our previous efforts is that we’re expanding the field to 50 (FIVE-ZERO) golf ball models.

A good bit of the field is already filled but we know many of you have STRONG opinions about what else should be tested so we’re letting you choose the rest of the field.

Here’s the list of 40 balls confirmed for the test.

  • Bridgestone TOUR B X
  • Bridgestone TOUR B XS
  • Bridgestone TOUR B RX
  • Bridgestone TOUR B RXS

  • Wilson Staff Model

While we might have a last-minute release that’s too intriguing to leave off the list, as of right now, we have 10 slots available.

Instead of a one-word survey, we’ve cooked up a simple one-question survey. All you have to do is choose the ball(s) you would most likely us to test. You may choose up to three.

Top vote-getters fill the remaining spots. That’s all there is to it.

When will the results be posted? Or can I just not find them?

So, to get this in perspective, a lot of us are NOT 10-15 hdcp.!! Most of us do not, or will not spend money on balls that will spin off of our drivers into the bush, never to be seen again. Been there, done that!! We all want to be that great golfer we see on TV, and a small % will get there, but most of us just want to play the game to enjoy the outdoors, and friends, and have settled with what we have. We don’t want to spend the time taking lessons for the next year, or two. Life gets in the way, and a lot of us don’t have the time, nor the energy, or even the money. We just want to play, and if we have to play “soft, slow” balls, we will do it! Should take a survey of handicaps, or average scores of the membership, and see where it lands. I think there will be more 15+ players, than the lower end of the scale. 20+ will be a larger group here than you think!

If that’s the type of golf you play, that’s great! If I were you, I’d pick an economical ball that feels good to you. Soft and slow, no problem. But I think the individuals interested the most in this golf ball test are going to be in the range of 15 handicap and below, interested in performance. Just my two cents.

This isn’t the question you asked, but it would be great to take some of the shots that result in off-line dispersion and cut those balls in half to see if they have any of the core and mantle defects that you have found in your other ball tests.

These balls seem to be on the high price/high swing speed range. Will you be doing a similar test for lower price/lower swing speed?

Despite how golf balls are marketed, there’s no such thing as a ball for lower swing speeds. Flight and spin are the two most important fitting characteristics and neither directly correlates with speed.

When a company says their ball is for low swing speed players, it almost invariably means its soft (and won’t spin much around the green).

Yup! And there are a lot of us that need those soft, slow balls, just to play this game…

Glad to see you’ve got both the white AND yellow ProV1s so we can see if the color is any factor at all in performance.

Please add a matte finish ball vs its regular glossy white so we have that as well. I know matte “sucks” but let’s get the data.

Lastly, since you do wet wedge spin tests, how about a wet ball test in there?

You really needed a test to confirm that color doesn’t affect performance in a PRO V1? If that’s the case, you’re thinking way too much for nothing.

Good to hear! In this year’s study, could you please include your uncertainties? Measurements are hard to interpret without them.

Brands have already had their 3 for 2 or 4 for 3 deals so isn’t this test a little late since most have already purchased their balls for the summer?

Right, because nobody buys golf balls after Memorial Day.

I do, especially if I can find deals. Usually Dicks, with the 2fer deals, I buy all season…
