Asked On Reddit: What Are The Most Useless Golf Products Of All Time?

A Reddit user recently posed a simple question: What’s the most useless golf product you’ve ever purchased?

Golfers, as it turns out, had a lot to say. Dozens of responses poured in calling out overhyped gadgets, overpriced accessories and training aids that never really trained anything.

While not every golfer agrees, a few products got called out more than once. We dug into the most commonly mentioned items and looked at what we believe are some of the most useless golf products of all time. Here are our top five.

The golf ball waist holder

The golf ball waist holder clips to your waist so you’re ready with a second or third golf ball whenever you need it. Frankly, it’s a little embarrassing walking around with one of these, assuming you’ll run out of golf balls at any moment. Can’t we keep golf balls in the bag and grab one if we need to reload?

Aside from the looks, most golfers said it added no real value and was just one more thing to fumble with. Even a pocket does a better job.

The Pill Golf Ball

Marketed as a way to instantly reveal flaws in your putting stroke, the Pill is a small, oval-shaped training ball designed to wobble and roll off line when you miss your line. The problem with it is that it’s too sensitive and time-consuming to use.

It tells you that you have issues with your stroke but not how to fix it. In addition, it requires you to set it up for each shot you take.

In other words, the feedback you get is not worth paying for.

GolfDaddy Portable Simulator

At $100, the GolfDaddy simulator promises a full swing experience at home using a mobile app and an included sensor. The reality, however, fell short.

We tested it ourselves (full review here) and while the concept was intriguing, the execution didn’t quite hold up. Misreads, connectivity issues and a lack of realism made it more of a novelty than a game-improvement tool.

4 Yards More Tees (and anything like it)

Despite bold claims of extra distance, many golfers who have tried have noticed no real difference in performance.

Plastic, rubber, brush—you name it—most golfers stick with the basic wooden tee for good reason. It’s cheap, breaks clean and it works without slowing down your swing (and it’s environmentally friendly). Tees are not where you need to be investing your golf budget.

Eyeline Ball of Steel

This weighted training ball is designed to improve putting by requiring you to strike it squarely and firmly. But some golfers say it’s a gimmick that encourages bad habits, especially for those with feel-based strokes.

It also doesn’t react like a real golf ball which limits the usefulness of the feedback.

Swing Jacket

Aimed at helping golfers groove a one-plane swing, the Swing Jacket wraps across your arms and torso on rigid “rails” to physically guide each motion. At around $150, it’s pitched as a “tour pro” training tool with instant muscle‑memory feedback.

It’s a bit too much. It keeps the arms tied to the body but it’s awkward and it isn’t realistic for what you’ll really need to improve on the course.

For most golfers, a golf straitjacket should probably end up on the list of “useless” golf products.

Golf score counters

These little clicker-style tally devices clip onto your glove, bag or belt.

In addition to most of these being poorly made, if you can’t remember your score, you may want to focus on just playing golf for fun. There are apps, as well as the traditional pencil and scorecard method, that are better than these.

The bottom line? Score counters are more of a hassle than they’re worth.

Are any of these products right for you?

While these items made Reddit’s “worst of” list, it’s worth noting that some players do benefit from niche training aids or oddball accessories. The real issue is whether the product solves your problem, not whether it just looks cool or makes bold claims.

I use the four more yards tees because they regulate the height I play the ball. I don’t care about the name. A pack of 4 lasts me a hundred rounds.

I don’t always want my tee at one constant height. Tee it lower to keep the ball out of the wind. Tee it higher to help use the wind when its at your back. I use the line on my knuckle to set the tee consistently.

I like the ball teed low almost always but not too low and I can raise it if I want. I don’t want to get to much to the side of the ball. I tend to over shape shots so I try to stick to straight. Different tastes for different games. Our club has tees in the cart if I want to change for a specific shot.

I have the steel ball. I have put it away…. I loved weighted baseballs for warming up and thought this may be similar…. did not think it thru. I had to try it. I may use it again to fine tune a very specific contact but than again it may just not work… for 99% of golfers.

If you can’t put your tee in the ground at the same height, by using the driver as a reference, then you’re more simplistic than the tee itself.

I agree with all of you about the 4 yards more tees, I don’t care about supposedly getting more yardage ever since I started using these my drives are more consistent. I play almost every day and I have been using this one almost 2 years.

I actually like the ball of steel. I don’t use it often, but when I start leaving my lag putts short again it helps me get a firm stroke without whacking at the ball.

I have one of those 4 more yards tee. IDK if I get 4 yards or not but I’ve been using it for about 3 years. Never breaks and always the same height. So yeah it’s good.

The tee and score counter are fine by me i use both and like others said i dont go through more than a handful of tee a season with them and the score counter i have is small and clips on my glove velcro strip so i never forget to count a stroke well never go more than 2 strokes without remembering to be honest but there are way more usless golf items than that like the electronic ball center of gravity finder lol

It is at the same height because there is a small ring below the top of the tee so when you push it down, it won’t go any further. Try them.

I totally disagree on the 4 More Yards golf tees, sure they don’t add distance , but what they do do is to have you insert your tee into the ground the same amount every time so your ball is teed up the same height every time. The tee has a collar on it that sets your ball consistently every time. Also, I need to use maybe 3 of these tees IN A YEAR of golfing every week as they DON”T break.

I hit down even on my driver, I break these almost every time someone gives me one to try, but the ball is a consistent height when I break them

      Agree with you Dan !
Who can be so consistent that they can measure a 4 yard improvement anyway .
I use the green ones for my driver only .
They don’t break and they stay in the ground so very difficult to lose.
I use one or two a season !

I still have the Swing/Strait Jacket. My house could be a museum for swing gadgets. I’m a 11 now but am on an upswing. Never used any of them long enough to make a real difference.

Arccos works best for me these days, the club averages and swings gained features are insightful but nothing is perfect. I need a 3D biometric swing analyzer, that’s the ticket!

Alignment rods, first you have 13 of them in your bag, just lay a couple clubs down, and if you need something sticking in the ground, either find a broken shaft or go the a hardware store and get a couple of drive way markers at 2 bucks apiece far better than the $20 special sets you can buy.

I disagree about the ball of steel. I find it very useful and gives instant feedback to tell if you are decelerating on your stroke. It’s not an every day need, but helps when your stroke is just off. If you strike the ball of steel with anything but the sweet spot on your putter, you know instantly.

i’m gonna agree to disagree on the tees complaint in this article. i use a brush-t and i could care less about the supposed 4 extra yards, which i don’t believe for one instant.
what i DO like about it – it doesn’t break/no constant fishing around for a new tee on a driver-only hole, and more importantly, when i find the one i like (yellow) it goes into the ground without a thought to the exact same height every time.
there are a few things that annoyed me more than a good-for-me driver swing that lost yardage because i had it teed up or down a fraction of an inch too high or low, couldn’t find a tee, couldn’t line up one of the markings on the tee with how close/in the ground i wanted, etc. first world problems to be sure, but one less thing for me to think about now.

I find those weird tees or the “Mar-Tee-Ni” or whatever they call it from time to time. I can confidently say that I have never hit a bill well off of them. They feel weird and make an odd sound.

If you’re getting 4 more yards, more power to you, but I don’t get it.

Love the 4 More Yards driver tees, ball is always at the same height, they last more than 10 rounds for me and easy to find after strike. The short purple/orange ones are a waste for iron hits, easily lost, better to use a broken tee someone has left.

I agree 100%. The 4 More Yards tees aren’t valuable for the alleged extra yards, they are valuable for the ease at which your ball height is consistent without thinking about it.

I agree…always the same tee height on driver and two will get me through a season. I love the short ones but agree that they are too easily lost; I now just scour the tee box, find a broken tee and keep it moving!

      Hi Mike,
That’s the same reason why I swear by them. The tee height is always the same.

I don’t get how it can be the same height every time when the ground can be different?? Sometimes soft, sometimes firm, sometimes tightly mowed and somethings long grass that makes the tee go down into the ground sure, but then you have all that grass sticking up around it
So how do you make it be the same height every time? You’re surely “adjusting” how much you push down, just like any other tee???

I love my 4 yard longer tees too. Exact hight every time, last a long time so that makes it environmentaly friendly. Also something that’s rarely made in USA. Especially when it comes to gold equipment.

Martini tees are very popular down in retirement-land. Those shaky hands have a hard time balancing a ball on a normal tee. They probably kill yardage, but you can at least tee it up.
