Back-To-Back Wins For The Titleist GTS—But Some Big Names Haven’t Moved

J.T. Poston made the switch to the Titleist GTS3 driver early and it didn’t take long to pay off. The 33-year-old picked up the new driver at the Valero Texas Open, just the second week it was available to PGA Tour pros, and won the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village a few weeks later.

That was the GTS’s coming-out party.

Then the driver hit retail shelves on June 11 and Bud Cauley went out and won the RBC Canadian Open with a GTS2 in his bag. Back-to-back PGA Tour wins for the GTS.

I’ve been tracking the clubs used in every PGA Tour win this year. Titleist drivers have won quite a few events but some of the big names are sticking with the GT series.

Who has switched?

Since debuting at the Houston Open, more than 40 Tour players have put a GTS in play.

The list of players who have switched is long and includes some notable names.

Jordan Spieth is in a GTS2. Justin Thomas is in a GTS2. Billy Horschel went GTS3. So did Webb Simpson, Tom Kim and Maverick McNealy. Robert MacIntyre made the switch as well.

Cameron Young, as recently as last week, had the Titleist GTS3 in the bag, and he was spotted at the U.S. Open with it still in there.

The model breakdown is telling. The GTS2 leads the way with 23 players, the GTS3 is close behind with 21, and the GTS4 is a niche choice with just three players gaming it.

Who hasn’t switched

Matt Fitzpatrick is still in his GT3. He has three wins this year, the Valspar, RBC Heritage and the Zurich Classic with his brother Alex. He is one of the hottest players on Tour right now and he hasn’t touched the GTS. Can’t say I blame him.

Ludvig Aberg is still in the previous generation. So is Russell Henley. J.J. Spaun is still in a GT3. So is Aaron Rai.

When you’re playing well, it’s hard to make a switch in the middle of the season, even though Cameron Young is giving it a try.

The GTS is clearly building toward something. Back-to-back wins in its first few months, two different models in the winner’s circle and a retail launch timed perfectly to capitalize on the momentum. But the old guard isn’t gone yet and the guys still playing the GT aren’t struggling.
