First Look – Vega Alcor Wedge

Check out the upcoming Alcor Wedge from Vega Golf, which features a distinctly funky fluted back cavity design. Rest assured this isn’t just happy milling, those channels provide aesthetic detail with an actual purpose.

It’s not the least bit uncommon for wedges to have a center of gravity that’s located low and towards the heel. With the Alcor wedge, Vega has strategically removed material in order to raise the CG while moving it to the true center of the of the clubface. The result, says Vega, is more spin and improved control.

There are some subtle details hidden within the channels. The cut lines get deeper as you move towards the sole, and they’re angled (and sized) to promote that high center CG we just talked about.

Vega is also using a new milling process which it claims improve spin. The sole is designed to be versatile-enough to allow clean contact from any lie.

Kyoei Forged

The Alcor wedge is forged by Kyoei from S25C carbon steel, so you can expect it to feel buttery soft.

Finally, Vega is using a new shaft with a new bend profile, which like other wedge-specific shafts, is designed to produce penetrating flight with plenty of spin.

Retail price will be: $239

Please keep reviewing these “odd ball” designs from smaller companies. I would never see any of this stuff if it wasn’t for you. I won’t buy one but it’s nice to see the different designs and the reasons behind them. I’ll look closer at COG next time I buy one….

I paid $25.50 each for some SGS wedges at GigaGolf and they were even made to the length and lie I wanted for no extra charge. And they look and work just fine.

I build the finished clubs for my friend who owns the distribution rights for Vega for North America. She keeps me pretty busy.

I guess your offer of good luck paid off.

Looks nice, but not sure I want to be cleaning dirt out of all those cavities after every shot. Price is prohibitive too.

I like it. seems like a very precise way to control CG. I wonder if they will be different on the other lofts? Just the one sole grind? Hmmm….I hope you can get your hands on a set to review.

$240 for a wedge??? A club i replace on average every season? Clearly I am not the intended demographic for this club or company.

Let’s not overlook the fact that it doubles as a cheese grater and bottle opener.

This one made me laugh. I think very often when we speak of the versatility of a wedge we’re too constrained in our thought process. Why does that always have to mean on-course versatility? This is a true multi-function device.

Laughed out loud and choked. Quiet work environment people thot I was nuts. Still too much for a wedge…but I like that it was presented.
