SPOTTED: Kirkland Signature KS2 Putter

If TaylorMade’s recent lawsuit had any effect on Costco’s golf production … they sure aren’t showing. Rather than shut down and take an L, it appears that Kirkland Signature is revamping for yet another budget-friendly release: the KS2 putter.

We’ve just seen the first images of what appears to be the bargain brand’s first mallet putter, dubbed the KS2.

While information is still very limited, there are a few things we can infer based on initial photos and the past KS1 putter design.

  • Adjustable weights. The KS2 Putter will feature adjustable weights
  • Single-bend hosel. Based on the initial photos, the hosel appears to be a single-bend.
  • SuperStroke Grip. Photos don’t show the grip on the KS2, but we can infer based on the KS1 that the KS2 will come standard with a SuperStroke grip.
  • CNC milled from 303 stainless steel.

The winged KS2 Putter is not yet available at retail, and we’re not sure of pricing or anything beyond initial photo leaks. As soon as we know more information, you’ll be the first to know.

A few weeks ago you had an article about the COSTCO Kirkland Signature Adjustable Driver. I am wondering if it will be back in production and will it ever make it to Canada? Thxs

It’s only a ripoff if Costco violates an active patent. That was the basis of Titleist’s golf ball lawsuit.
If a component manufacturer is improperly sharing design details with Costco that are covered under an exclusive deal with eg Ping then the manufacturer is in violation and unethical.
But if you can make gear under open art or reverse engineer a feature that isn’t patented, then that’s fair game whether it’s a golf club, a TV or a skillet.

I don’t understand why people are so upset with Costco coming out with golf equipment. I haven’t bought any of it but I don’t begrudge people for doing so as I think that many of the golf manufacturers are simply taking advantage of the golfers who believe, rightly or wrongly, that the products of the big boys are better. How many of the new putters by the big companies are really unique and better than others when they are nearly identical to the others by the same company or a competitor. How many versions are there out there of the Spyder putters by different manufacturers or the original Ping Anser, etc.? What does it tell you when a putter from a major manufacturer loses 50% of its value in a year – perhaps that there were so many made that are now up for resale that makes it worth much less. To me it is like the original Kirkland golf ball which Titleist threatened to sue Costco over – the lawsuit was never filed because it gave the impression that Titleist was just ripping people off as Costco could produce a very similar ball and sell it for a much lower price – Titleist realized that and changed its approach to emphasize the quality of their balls which hit home for people who care and they are able to sell at that much higher price. I know I won’t buy this new putter but if someone wants to play it then I have no problem as it is their money and their game.

Looks like they copied the EVNROLL groove pattern with larger gaps right in the center that taper as you move away from the center.

Looks interesting but not having the ability to be fitted is a big negative. I was fitted at PXG and still spent under $200. I tested several heads-grips and shafts. Selecting these options made a huge difference in the putter designed for my swing. It will be interesting to see the price point of these putters.

As golf expands or tries to the reality is that golf is attempting to bring in people who were not previously attracted to the game. Reality is also that many of these people will not be buying $600 drivers and $400 putters. Nor will they be paying $75 green fees. I think Costco is simply using 3-4 years old tech and bringing it to market. I equate it to buying a generic drug rather than the original brand name. Buying a $600 driver off the shelf at “Dicks” or even your local pro shop is no better than buying a $300 driver off the shelf at Costco. The average 15-20 handicap will putt just as good with this putter as he would with a brand new “Scottie” and have enough left over for a few dozen balls that he will fire into the woods and be no less easy to find than a $4 Titleist.

This is a fantastic point! Yes these Kirkland products are complete rip offs from the original manufacture and yes they should be held accountable for what they are doing. The lesson here is that the manufactures need to have a good quality selection of entry level equipment. Callaway posted a 3 billion dollar profit I am sure they could put together a quality mid priced set and then partner with Costco so new entry level players with entry level budgets can start playing.

Callaway is partnered with Costco and sells a 10 club set for $550.
      (1) Titanium driver with head-cover
      (1) 3-wood with head-cover
      (1) 5-hybrid with head-cover
      (4) Cavity back irons (6–9i)
      (1) Pitching wedge
      (1) Sand wedge
      (1) Odyssey White Hot Pro Putter with SuperStroke grip and head-cover

Tom, let me correct you. Sales are not earnings. Their total sales are running now about $4 billion a year. But net profit is around $400 million, and their cash flow is negative, as they are paying down a lot of real estate debt. The company total stock is worth about $2.6 billion. The company now calls itself Topgolf Callaway and the ticker symbol on the stock exchange is MODG. In a statement from late 2020 when the merger with Top Golf was announced, the rating agency S&P said that Callaway has NOT netted a one year cash flow of $100 million in the last 10 years. S&P dropped the credit rating on Callaway because of the debt that Top Golf has.

Now it is surely a big wealthy company. Acushnet, Titleist/Footjoy, stock (GOLF) is worth about $4.5 billion even though it’s sales are less than Callaway, around $2.5 billion a year. It has a lot less debt.

Either company could sell low priced clubs but the costs of developing and of course MARKETING makes it barely profitable. And it risks killing the main brand. If Titleist promoted their Pinnacle brand and said it was by Titleist, I would love to be in the boardroom when that discussion happens.

Tom – which patents did you analyze to come to your legal opinion to characterize Costco’s efforts as “rip offs”. Which law school did you attend? What intellectual propertry cases have you been involved with? Do you have any patents?

Do you buy any generics like Acetominophen or Ibuprophen instead of the brands Tyelenol or Advil (or Motrin)? Do you call those rip offs?

I saw callaway sets, including bag being sold inside costcos……Callaway didn’t make 3 billion, also costco isn’t ripping off anyone. An excellent analogy of this is what you were responding with generic drugs being offered rather than real McCoy. When it comes to putters every shape, every look has been made somewhere in the world by someone, who cares as long as the ball goes in the hole.

I may be wrong or it may have been the Costco in my town or something, I’m not pretending to know the ins and outs of it but I could’ve swore before they started making their own equipment they used to sell a complete callaway sort of budget set.

There are several “off-brands” that make excellent equipment for a reasonable price. Golfworks is my personal preference. Exact copies of a competitor’s product is cheating, but reworking a concept is not. For example, I think a lot of companies are going to follow the Edison wedge idea of a higher sweet spot to cater to the amateur contact tendency.

I’m really curious about those hex screws on the mallet fangs. I’m wondering if Edel is making this (as it reminds me of their new Array style putters), and the mallet fangs could be removable/replaceable with different mallet style backs.

These photos are obviously not from the factory so you would assume that they were taken in real life by someone who has been using the putter. Probably a douche who doesn’t put the head cover back on after using it each hole. Gotta treat it nicer than that.
This putter will sell faster than their previous putter, fangs are where it is at.

Looks cheap. I just bought a 2023 TaylorMade Spider GT from PGASuperStore for only $179 (used to be $349 when it came out a couple yrs ago)… Looks nicer than the Kirkland. But maybe if the Kirkland is under $100 it would be good

Good point. That’s what I have always done. To afford the better equipment I will a couple years and buy it used. Honestly one of the best rounds I ever played was with a of Dunlop, yes Dunlop, clubs I bought at Kmart LOL. Whatever equipment you choose to use, use it, have fun. I take comfort in knowing that even the best of golfers find the woods and water from time to time so the same will happen to all of us. Have a Great Round Today if you’re playin!

Yeah, not sure KSig hit the bullseye with this one. Not very pleasing to the eye and if I’m going to take a chance on a budget friendly DTC option, it better come with a little sex appeal to get me to budge. These leaked photos don’t really move me.
