TaylorMade P770 Phantom Black Irons

It’s been a year (almost) since TaylorMade P770 irons launched, so you know the drill.

To keep it fresh, TaylorMade has added a Phantom Black version of the P770 to the lineup.

The smaller of TaylorMade’s hollow-body players distance irons, the P770 pairs a soft 8620 carbon steel body with a fast 4141 steel face.

Speed and feel are enhanced by the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket and SpeedFoam Air filling, respectively.

About “Black Phantom”

TaylorMade P770 Phantom Black Irons

As far as the finish is concerned, Phantom Black is TaylorMade-speak for black PVD. Is it the most durable finish on the planet? Probably not.

Does it look fantastic fresh out the box? Oh, hell yes (he said while wiping a bit of drool from the corner of his mouth).

As is typical for these 2nd-year refreshes, the TaylorMade Phantom Black P770 iron offering comes stock with a black KBS Tour shaft (X,S) to give the irons the desired black-on-black or mudered-out look.

The stock Golf Prize Z-Grip has a bit of gray on it, which, for better or worse, breaks up all the black just a bit.

If you want to find a Black finish that absolutely lasts, find a Raw set of heads and then find a company that will do a Salt Bath Nitrate finish on them. I use to refinish Putters that way as well as a few sets of irons and the one Yes Putter I still have looks as good as the day I had it finished after 3 years of use and 7 more years of putting with it indoors.

‘Is it the most durable finish on the planet?’

Honestly? I’ve used my Apex 21 Blacks multiple times a week since I got them last fall, and while they don’t look factory fresh anymore, the scuffs aren’t visible at address either.

I think PVD gets a bad rap because as with most coatings, the thicker it is the more expensive it is and it’s really easy to cheap out and still look good in the showroom. If you’re the type of player who changes irons every 2-3 years, it’s not really a factor anymore at the high-end.

I have the foolproof way to keep your black irons looking absolutely perfect and showroom fresh.

Don’t play them! Mount them in your living room and display them like fine art!

Otherwise, they will wear, as mine have. But as long as I’m hitting good shots with them, I’m fine with that!
