How Do I Know I’m Buying the “New” Kirkland Golf Ball?

Which version of the Kirkland Golf Ball is the right one? It’s one of the most common questions we’re getting right now, and it makes a lot of sense. ‘Cause not only has Costco’s curriculum confused the hell out of you, they’ve confused the hell out of us. There has been so many versions it’s hard to keep up with.

So today we’re gonna give you the comprehensive breakdown of every single version. It’s gonna include package changes, alignment, markings, and performance differences.

[adthrive-in-post-video-player video-id=”qrxfv8nV” upload-date=”2025-08-26T16:57:32+00:00″ name=”Kirkland Ball Guide” description=”” player-type=”default” override-embed=”default”]

We’re gonna start with version one or what we call the unicorn. That was the four-piece ball that we tested directly, head to head against the Pro V1, and it pretty much kicked its ass.

That one has a black and green box, and that’s the one that was discontinued after the Titleist lawsuit. Next up, version 1.5. This fall was released in 2019 and it only lasted about 1.5 minutes. Why? Because it was defective after a single shot. We saw the entire cover tear off and they pulled it from the shelves. So you’re probably not gonna find those, but if you do find a gold box, don’t play it.

Next up is version 3.0. This one was released in 2021, and for those of you who remember, it had a black box with silver stripes on the side. It lasted a couple of years, but this is the one that you might remember spun way too much for way too many golfers.

It also had two Chevron markings on either side of the alignment aid. Alright, last but not least, the most current version, and this is where some of the confusion comes in. It also says version 3.0 on the box, but here’s what you need to look for. A black box with a red stripe down the side, not a silver one.

The performance of the new ball we just tested is up to par with many major brands, and it’s likely to be one of the most widely available in the store you’ll find.

So once again, look for the black box, red stripe.

Don’t mess with any of the rest.

Knowing WHERE they are made is really important. The first ones were made in South Korea. The second in China. The third in Vietnam. I haven’t bothered to look at the red stripe box.

Does anyone have an image of the golf ball markings by version? A graphic would be handy.

Not a very comprehensive breakdown being that V2.0 was completely skipped over.

Version 3.5 are sold online in both white and yellow – and from the looks of it, you don’t need to be a Costco member.

I tried, but once you get to a certain point, it asks for your account info.

Sometimes you see people seeing them on Amazon at a mark up. Personally,I think a Costco membership is worth the $65/year if you have one close by. Gas and the food court will pay for itself.

I appreciate the intent, but this article reads like it was rushed without being completed or proofread.

The new Kirkland ball (still designated 3.0 by Costco) has hollow alignment arrows bracketing “Performance +”, versus the prior gen 3.0 that has two chevrons bracketing the “Performance +” alignment marking.

That you can’t see unless you open boxes in store… Or you could pay attention to the only important fact… Telling us the red stripe is the one to get. Markings not important. But thx

It’s a very important detail if you find them on course as a lost ball and decide to use them!

Are the markings V3.5 and the V3 balls the same or is it just the stripe on the box?
You mention the chevron on the V3 alignment. Does the V3.5 have it too or not?

Thank you for the clarification, I’ve been looking for boxes that show v3.5 without success. I thought maybe Costco was just purging their old v3.0 stock.

I don’t know if “version 3.5” is an official Costco designation or just you making the distinction between the early season non-red stripe box and the most recent red stripe version, but the website shows the red stripe box and labels them as version 3.

A picture of the side stamp of each version would have been very helpful, especially for those of us that find them “in the wild” and never see the box the ball came in. Thanks (?)??) for the rather incomplete information.

Our local Costco recently removed the display in favor of Halloween stuff. I also didn’t luck out and find a new one this year.
