Masters Grades: Rory vs. Scottie, TV Coverage Stumbles And Par 3 Contest Nonsense

Now that the Masters is behind us, it’s time to take stock of the whole week from Augusta National.

It was a solid Masters overall—I’ll give it a B+ on the whole—as Rory McIlroy made history by becoming the fourth back-to-back green jacket winner.

These are my individual grades for every element of the 90th Masters that I could think of.

Rory vs. Scottie (A)

We didn’t necessarily get the head-to-head drama down the second nine on Sunday, but the macro view of the Rory McIlroy vs. Scottie Scheffler battle is that they have each won two of the past five Masters.

Who will be the first one to three Masters?

And then there is the career trajectory. McIlroy is at six majors and leads Scheffler by two, but McIlroy is more than six years older.

They are in a race to establish themselves as top players in the game’s history.

Par 3 Contest (D+)

Where do we even start?

Get Jason Kelce out of there. Get Kevin Hart out of there. This is supposed to be a fun family outing, not a celebrity/influencer event where Jelly Roll is getting lessons on the range.

Yeah, the TV ratings were strong—but the Masters shouldn’t stoop that low.

Course setup (B)

We got a little bit of everything from a course setup standpoint but ended up in a good place.

Thursday felt like a U.S. Open as the afternoon wave of players were battered by firm conditions.

On Friday and Saturday, the Masters artificially softened the course as the temperature rose and the wind died to a standstill. Players took full advantage of receptive greens.

Sunday felt like a mixture of the two as some players were able to get after it but the value of par still held strong.

Overall, good shots were rewarded and bad shots were punished. The only complaint is how much the course changed throughout the tournament despite the weather forecast being fairly consistent.

LIV golfers (D)

Other than Tyrrell Hatton surging to a T3 finish, no other LIV golfer finished in the top 30 of this 91-man tournament.

Jon Rahm ejected early with an opening-round 78 and Bryson DeChambeau caught two triple bogeys to miss the cut.

Temper tantrums (D-)

Robert MacIntyre got reprimanded for flipping off the course and then posted an AI gnome of himself with the middle finger. Then Sergio Garcia got reprimanded on the course for taking a chunk out of a tee box and breaking his driver.

The petulance is tough but I do love public reprimands from the green jackets.

Sunday drama (B-)

We got drama on the first nine Sunday as McIlroy, Scheffler, Justin Rose, Cameron Young and others jockeyed for position.

But the dream scenario of a five-man playoff died around the 12th hole when McIlroy took control of the tournament

Justin Rose (A-)

My heart breaks for the 45-year-old Rose who had a great shot to finally win a green jacket but finished with a 2-over 38 on the second nine.

It’s wildly impressive that he is able to manage his way around ANGC. I find myself rooting hard for him.

My pre-tournament predictions (F)

I said this could be a wide-open Masters where the favorites aren’t in contention.

Whelp. The two best golfers in the world finished first and second.

Collin Morikawa (A)

What a gritty performance by Morikawa.

It was questionable whether he would even tee it up this week, and it was clear he wasn’t at 100 percent. Morikawa talked openly about his back issues and how it affected him mentally.

Going 68-68 on the weekend is solid, solid work.

TV coverage (C-)

A rarity in the modern Masters era, the TV coverage was decidedly bad this year.

Despite there being very few commercial interruptions—but perhaps more than usual—CBS had a bizarre Sunday that was out of character for this tournament.

Sam Burns was a co-leader of the Masters, chopping it up the second hole. They didn’t show his poor tee shot but did have time to show Hideki Matsuyama missing an eagle putt on No. 13.

That was a microcosm of the day. CBS was heavily delayed following Scottie Scheffler’s run and then completely botched the 72nd hole when it took an absurdly long time to find where McIlroy and Young’s second shots had finished.

It didn’t feel like there was as much gravity to the tournament.

However, on the flip side…

Masters App (A)

There were occasional glitches on the app this year, but this is still an incredible piece of technology.

I ran out of the house for 20 minutes on Sunday and being able to catch every shot from every player is so convenient.

And each of the streams available were produced/announced brilliantly throughout the tournament.

Masters social media (A)

Shoutout to the round recap videos on Instagram that the Masters unveiled this year. Truly awesome and creative stuff.

There was some tremendous output from the social media team all week. Kudos.

Merch haul videos (F)

Nope. Nope. We’re not doing this.

The Masters merch operation as a whole needs to be reined in as gnomes, dumb hats, over-purchasing and Disney-ification has become standard fare.

Part of this is on the Masters and part of it is uncontrollable. It’s hard to stop people from buying 30 of everything and making TikToks.

But you can take it all away.

What did you think of this year’s Masters?

Let me know below in the comments.

Can’t agree with you more on the merchandise sales. I was there for two days and could not believe some of the wait times to get into the golf shops and then when I finally did get in, it felt like a hockey game. Lots of sharp elbows to get up to the counters to ask for a shirt or a hat. Then, seeing people coming out with huge bags in both hands and multiple gnomes. Asked one of the young women at the checkout what was her largest sale, and she said one guy spent $12,000.

CBS coverage is brutal, all the announcers are just stating the obvious half the time. Nantz is just trying to bring nostalgia constantly. They spend so much time talking about pin positions of past Masters and history it just gets annoying, hard to watch. It has become so pretentious with the “patrons”, “tournament practice area” and all that garbage I wind up muting half of the time.

I agree, am so glad I wasn’t the only one who thought the coverage was spotty at best despite fewer commercials.
Not sure which channel had it (prob. Local network) but really abhor the talking heads yammering on and on about their opinions….just show the golf. Save the yammering for post event coverage.

I watched a lot of the tourn streaming on the espn app ; the 4 commercials ( with Jordan / John / bubba etc ) than ran back to back were brutal by Sunday ; thankfully i started hitting the mute button every time .

From approximately 1975 as a junior I would excitedly wake up at 5am every day the Masters was on and avidly watch until I had to go to school or work. When I retired I would still do the same but now could watch the whole thing. However starting last year I can no longer do that because I do not have a pay TV service. The Masters is no longer on free to air in Australia and we are totally envious of anyone who gets to see it live. I now rely on you tube snippets or 20 second grabs on the official website. We don’t even get The Open anymore. Good luck to all who get the majors live and free.

From your description, I’m glad I missed the Par-3 contest. I probably would have thrown a 6-iron through the screen.

No need for celebrities of any kind in the Par 3 contest. I’m very surprised that was approved by the powers that be.

As good as the masters app is it would be nice if there could be more actual television coverage on Saturday and Sunday. If cbs can’t do the mornings let Golf Network cover it. Max Homa had an awesome round and a good majority of people missed it because cbs only starts coverage when the leaders tee off.

CBS continues to show just how poorly they broadcast. Scenes of Rory walking, Rory standing and the group in Northern Ireland cheering instead of being able to watch actual golf shots by the players continues to boggle the mind.

The stars walking and talking to their caddies. Studying their shots and thinking about their shots. Elsewhere, shots are being played on the world’s most famous and beautiful golf course and we’re not seeing those shots because we are watching Rory toss grass into the air to calculate the wind direction. And then the random Joe Blow in 57th place appears and guess what is going to happen with his shot? “Whoa, it’s in the hole. Cinderella story! ” Still, it is better than the Honda Classic and I couldn’t look away for four days. Could be much better though. What does Trevor Immelman contribute to the show? The accent. CBS sure loves the foreign accent. Keep Frank Nobilo. Bring back Sir Nick and Ian Baker Finch. Gather everything Verne Lundquist has said through the years, edit it into snippets. Play the appropriate snippet. Loved it but I could love it more…

I’ll just comment on the Par 3: it’s turned into total BS. When I attended “back in the day” (Fuzzy, Seve, Tom Watson…) it was truly a contest. There were no kids in caddie uniforms playing in the bunkers like they were sandboxes. Also, it wasn’t televised. If it was in fact a contest, it might be worthy of airtime. But as it is, let the players and their families have their fun and ESPN can air Division III Field Hockey instead.

Listening to Colt Knost all Sunday long doing nothing but praising Rory was the worst. I’m still not sure he’s removed his nose from Rory’s ass yet.
The coverage on the back 9 was terrible. They weren’t showing shots from the leading 5 or so players, and seemed to only show Rory’s shots the last 2 or 3 holes. There were several Cam Young drives we didn’t even see down the stretch. I got to watch the coverage on the ESPN app most of Saturday and it was way better as they seemed to do a better job of showing everyone over the broadcast time. But the CBS broadcast on Sunday was one of the worst I’ve seen in a while, and that’s saying something.

I watched “featured groups” on Amazon Prime” because I wanted to watch in real time. The broadcast on CBS which was supposed to be live, on Saturday was sometimes as much as 2 holes behind. Apparently, the braintrust at CBS and The Masters wanted what they call a “curated” broadcast, focusing on the leaders and basically ignoring others.

Fun tournament. I don’t do social media so I don’t have to watch people buying things.

I completely botched my prediction that Rory would falter, and I was pulling hard for Rose.

I watched the tournament via the Masters.com app. I have two screens open and was flipping back and forth between Selected Groups and Holes 5,6,7 and Amen Corner. It was awesome. Not only was I able to avoid almost all commercials, but we got to hear John Wood as an analyst. He is probably the best out there. The only weakness was the finish in which the apps closed down and I was forced to watch the broadcast. Hoping or more app options next year.
