A New (Old) Design With A New (Old) Look

Callaway/Odyssey recently released info about a new (old) putter line they are launching (re-launching).  It is called the Odyssey Black Series TOUR Design Putters.  Which they say is new and revolutionary.  They also say the following…but I would like to know what changes these pros made to the designs…cause they sure look like ones they have come out with in the past.

Odyssey States: In creating the Black Series Tour Designs putters, we consulted with some of the greatest players in the game, including Phil Mickelson,” said Austie Rollinson, Principal Designer for Odyssey Golf. “We incorporated this Tour player feedback into the design of these precision-crafted milled putters. The result is updated shapes and more head options preferred by better players, all delivering the truest roll possible in a premium look.”

The new putters will have what they are calling A.R.T. which stands for Advance Roll Technology.  Which basically comes down to meaning they put a tungsten back piece with a urethane dampening layer placed between the carbon steel putter face and the tungsten back piece.  Hmmm…this sounds very similar to another putter I remember a company making…oh yeah it was Odyssey that made that putter too…it was called the Odyssey Black Series.  So what is different??  Well not much…the only differences are this one is black and it has no insert.

How Long Will Odyssey Continue…

Now don’t get me wrong I think Odyssey makes one of the best quality putters for the price.  They have good R&D and great guys milling their heads.  But…how long do you think Odyssey will continue to make the same designs over and over?  I guess until we stop paying $269.99 every time they make a minor change and call it “New & Improved!”.  The images of the putter are below and I have also included some of never before seen developmental stage 3D images of the putter designs that not everyone gets to see.  Hope you enjoy!

i saw these when the rep came in last. yeah they are the same shape as the always have been but all of the other major companies do the same thing. ping still do all their early models now in different colours and inserts. same with scotty camerons, same design but slightly different each time. we just have to accept that there are only so many designs that work without looking totally stupid. its only a flat stick to get the ball in a hole.
all this aside, they do look gorgeous, great weight and the weight at the back of the head really does give a great roll.

What would be the chances that Odyssey could hook up with a big named designer, to do a designer series of putters? That may lend them a new look and may stretch their designs in a new direction.

I don’t think that is the issue, they have good designers. I just don’t think they are willing to fix what ain’t broke. And like I said I totally understand their philosophy but just wish they came out with some innovative looking new designs other then in their mallet category.

Well that is a great answer. Why fix what ain’t broke?

Obviously they’ll keep what they have… To satisfy the envelope pushers, maybe they could come out with an Innovative Series that is completely separate from their standby line. Pushing the envelope of putter design. As you say, they have a good design staff.

I’m sure Odyssey has been using the same mold/cast for the last 15 years. I like the B60 model but this line has never appealled to me because of the way the two materials are joined it’s hardly seamless even when everything is black – they’ll have weld marks on reatil putters next LOL! There are lots of classic shapes which Odyssey hasn’t produced why no blades?

Like I have said in other articles…consumers are buying what catches their eye on the shelves and they think it is a better technology if it looks different and unique…blades just don’t sell well to the public as well as crazy mallets right now…at least to the average consumer.

I actually like the looks of these. I don’t plan on buying anything right now, but I am not sure what the group is looking for (A putter with fins or with higher MOI????). Putters tend to adjust incrementally and evolve.

wow, odyssey has the lamest excuse for new models ive ever seen…nothing theyve done with their “new” models has impressed me in the slightest

They seem to have left themselves with no where to go besides radical mallet designs. There line-up is good and I understand they are sticking with what got them here…but I would like to see some innovative designs that don’t look like something from Star Trek.

The Callaway rep we saw tried to convince us they were ‘new’… I wasn’t convinced, although the #9 is gorgeous…

Those are two of my favorites…the Zing 2 is a true classic and still looks great at address so many years later.

Better off getting new older models for a discounted price.
