If any ball were the best, then just about every pro would play it. But the fact is that Phil wins with Callaway, Jordan S. with Titleist, etc. So since there are several great balls for the pros, that has to apply to the rest of us. Right?

If any of us were to use a quality (Urethane cover) ball to its full potential, we would be scratch golfers or better, all the top ball makers are building more quality into their product than almost 99.9% of amateurs can feel/use or see, so find a quality ball which fits you swing and you will not be disappointed. PS do not scribble stupid stuff on it, cause when I find it I hate reading GRAFFITI. I am 74 and shoot may age with almost any quality ball…

I have tried them all and ProV1’s are the best…BUT do I play them, NO, I play the Callaway Chrome Soft Truvis black and Yellow or Green and White (DICKS) ..life is to short and just watching the Truvis ball fly, roll and spin is worth what ever difference there may be for me….just chipping with the ball for practice is as much fun as you can get looking at a golf ball in motion…

Based on each golfer’s consistence in achieving smash factors and Launch angle can provide a determination of which ball to play to enjoy their outing. After spending time on Trackman in fitting a driver a few months ago the stats illustrated that Bridgestone B RX was the better choice vs Titleist for me.. However, the E 12 optimized shots with mid/low irons..

From what I have read on this site the Titleist family is the most consistent ball. A desirable quality for testing clubs by eliminating a variable. I like the ProV1x. That is just a personal preference. If you like red striped range balls best good for you. If you look at TOUR results it is obvious that winners play all the various top line balls. Best? Every tour ball is better than my game.

the 2021 is the best ball ive ever played, hands dowm. I came from previous Prov’s, the 2019 TP5 and chromesoft……this version f the prov1 does everything i want…..i hope they do not change this ball ever. Simply the best….better than all the rest…..let me hear you sing it!!

Played a sleeve of all current tour balls.They all fly well.The real question is which one putts the best. Consistent putting is the essence of golf.It’s how we score our best. Any help with this?

Congratulations to MyGolfSpy for its progress with the Ball Lab project.

The previous test ball the Bridgestone Tour BRX is my current ball of choice. They perform very well for me and I like the fact that they are made not far from where I live in Georgia.

I understand using the Titleist Pro V1 based on its consistency of manufacture and I also agree that manufacturing consistency and performance for a golfer are not the same.

I have tried Titleist Pro V1 balls numerous times but have found that they do not perform as well for me as the Bridgestone. I don’t know why that is, but whenever I play Titleist ProV1s they curve more than the Bridgestone does and turn my draw into a hook and my fade into a slice. Perhaps they have inherently more spin or maybe the design of the dimple pattern has something to do with it. Maybe they just don’t agree with my swing and the launch conditions it creates.

According to Arccos strokes gained stats the strength of my game is putting and chipping. I’ve learned how the Bridgestone reacts and because I use it exclusively it is now very predictable and it does what I want. Plus I like how it feels and sounds. Changing balls is a big step because it means relearning all of those things.

After reading Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible last year I purchased a Technasonic Check Go Pro to find the balance equator and mark a line on each ball.

After using the machine for a year, based on my observations I can conclusively say that the inconsistencies that MyGolfSpy has reported on are real and sometimes balls are so out of whack that they need to be relegated to practice only. After a year of doing it I am convinced that the extra time to find the balance point and mark the balls is worthwhile and would like to see more manufacturers do it besides Maxfli.

Perhaps a future project for the Ball Lab, performance of CG balanced balls vs. unbalanced.

Despite the growing acceptance of club fitting as a best practice, ball fitting is still very much an afterthought.

Glad that MyGolfSpy is continuing down the Ball Lab path. The ultimate level of Ball Lab will be when they are able to provide fitting guidance based not just on quality control but ball performance at different swing speeds and impact parameters as well. Providing data on spin, dispersion, peak height, landing angle, carry and total distance.

Looking forward to seeing the Ball Lab continue to develop.

MGS is constantly producing interesting and informative reviews of Golf equipment for golfers of all ages ,ability,financial situation and passion for our game. This subject will be discussed over and over but in the long run it will be the individual who will select the ball of his or her choice. and at this time my selection is the Bridgestone E12 Soft. I have been playing the Pro V1 for two years now and it is the best ball for my game. The 2021 version seemed to get it all right. It is softer, lower spin off of the driver and more spin around the green. One added bonus is it is much better in the wind than the previous version. Love it!

Might as well get on board. Not my ball. Feels like I’m hitting a range ball. I play the Callaway SuperSoft. The ProV is great around the greens, as I have played it. Not so good for me off the tee. SuperSoft suits my game…

I played with the CS-x this weekend and liked it! I also noticed, Phil does NOT use the lines on the ball/he placed them face down.
I fitted for TP5X so I have a stash to use up this season.

Handicap is a terrible indicator for what’s best. How you hit the ball in all shot types is what matters. Also if the ProV1 is the best ball overall then it’s the best ball for everyone. Other balls are great too which enables personal preference but ProV1 should be everyone’s starting point. A 36 handicap player will improve more using the best ball than the most expensive clubs.

The problem is we don’t know if it is the best ball. MGS has no data to support that claim. It is the most consistent in its quality control, Tony has validated that. However it is possible that a company could build a range ball that exceeds the quality consistency of the ProV1. in all the tested categories. Would that make it the best ball? IMO no, it would still be a range ball, a very consistent range ball but a range ball nevertheless.
That said I do agree that using the most consistent ball to test other equipment makes sense as it reduces the “ potential” for the ball to influence the results. Just don’t call it the Best Ball!

Did I miss something? I’ve seen the data from your ball tests to support the claim of the best quality control. Where is the data to support the best performance? Please define best performance? Best performance for a certain demographic of golfer or is this claim for all golfers regardless of skill? Where is the data to support that claim?

Yes, I agree, lots of testing for hardness, roundness and overall value, but what about performance, or is it the assumption that the testing regime will result in performance. I also note the other comment about swing speed and while we all understand that MGS testers will have high swing speeds and would be suited to the best ball in the market, is it good for slower swings! Or is it that when testing everyone has a faster swing speed that allows MGS to come up with the recommendation?

It’s long past time for MGS to do a test of golf balls under performance conditions. Like the test you did over 2 years ago in April, 2019. The reader doesn’t want to know this kind of information after he’s played most of the golf season. He/She wants to know now. Without performance data, MGS is just selling “sizzle” now and the readers want “steak.”

Mine is the E6. Used to be the E7. I need to try the E12. ProV of any variation is bad for my game. If I see them on the course I see if someone else wants it, or I add it to my water ball bag so if it gets dunked I am not out $5 for a golf ball…lol…

I hope to learn how the v2.0 Kirkland ball stacks up against the Pro V1 at $1 per ball.. (The last version was great for short game but lousy for distance. Does v2.0 fix that?) Also, the Bridgestone Tour Series balls, which seem to be great at everything for $5 less per dozen than the Pro V1.

I just bought the 2.0 version.
They are 15 yards longer than the last version and I concur. Extra spin. I usually lose 1-3 balls a round but played all 18 with same ball and there was a little shredding. But I am very happy!
After extensive ball testing my ball turned out to be the ProV1x.
I did not notice any loss in distance. May have gained 5 yards on irons with the spin also
Couldn’t be happier. Give them a try..

I’m not sure you’ve made a study of “old” golf balls vs. new ones. It is my opinion that the “solid” balls improve with age (much like some of the fine wines). Hit a new Pro V-1 and then hit one that’s 10 years old and you will not find much of a difference. I remember reading several years ago that the solid balls continue to “cure” and improve. indefinitely.

You are basing future tests on what is arguably the best made ball available. Not necessarily the best ball for everyone but every test needs a baseline for comparisons – a virtual rock to break all other rocks on… Great move in my opinion & welcome add’n to the testing format.

Blown away here. Huge upset in the golf ball world. Did they even consider the new Srixon two colored ball.? Nope, they go with an all white urethane cover ball and totally ignore the ball with two colors. Two vibrant colors is better than an all off white covered ball the last time I checked.

“MyGolfSpy’s Ball Lab report on the Srixon Q-STAR TOUR last October found significant inconsistencies in both roundness and compression. For its part, Srixon hasn’t officially commented, other than to say they were surprised by the results. By comparison, the Srixon Z-STAR, which is made in Japan, scored very well in its Ball Lab test.”

In other MGS tests, matte golf balls performed slightly inferior when wet or dirty to regular white balls.

I think it’s safe to say they considered most major golf ball brands or colors and went with one of the most consistent balls readily available on the market.

I would suggest the Titleist Velocity or Bridgestone E6 as a ball that will play well for you. The big thing is to find a ball you like and stick with it for every shot.

Hey, Martin, stop looking in the big box stores & start looking online. You can buy mint condition Pro v1″s online for half the big box store prices. I know, I’ve sold hundreds of them!

In 2021 there is absolutely NO reason (unless you’re on the pro tour) to buy new pro v1’s balls in the store. But I’m actually glad people do! I haven’t put pools in 10 years and even made a few bucks with my excess.

People say that the ProV1 is not an optimal distance ball for golfers who swing driver in the ~80mph slower speed range. Is that true? Does its spin performance closer to the green offset its core hardness relative to softer balls like RXS and Chromesoft?

Even as someone who doesn’t play ProV1 (actually play Bridgestone—the previous testing ball) , I think this move makes sense. Notwithstanding the obvious performance characteristics of the ProV and the tight quality control from ball to ball, the ProV is simply the most wildest played ball out there so it makes sense to test with it.

Have found the new TaylorMade 5X to be longer off the tee with great control around the greens, and also the TM ball had a super trajectory for me. Both are about the same price.

The TP5 is a very good ball, and in my estimation is the closest competitor to the Pro V1 line. I get similar results from both and honestly, as a mid single digit, can’t discern much difference between the two. Since I was fit by Titleist for the Pro V1, I generally play that ball (fitting in early 2019).

What is the reason for using the V1 vs. the V1X? The recurring story is that firmer = better distance, so I would think, perhaps, the X would be the winner here?

Is it a function of the X being intended to be a little straighter, and that could impact the data/workability for the clubs?

Agree…..As the Pro V1x 2021 has the highest Rank and highest scores from the “Ball Lab” test, it makes you curious to get the result from the regular Pro V1 2021, as that is the new choice for all base line testing!? Why not the new V1x? If you can overcome the firmer feel of the V1x compared to regular V1, it’s even more suited to recreational golfers in it’s design, as you get slightly higher trajectory and more mid iron spinn, the two most important variables when it comes to holding the green with your approach shots..

With all the talk about golf balls here is something I found. There was a testing of golf balls using the robot at Scotdale AZ at the BGX I think that is the name. The testing took about a week to finish the testing. Here is what was found. The longest drive was the Bridgestone Tour B RX. The carry distance was 20.5.23. Titleist Pro V1 came in at 202..46. The distance between the longest and shortest was around five (5) yards. The testing was done with a robot so what does this tell you.? I think it is feel.
