Screw It. I’m Switching Back To A Blade Putter

You know what?

Data be damned (I say that lovingly).

I recently wrote about how we should never tell anyone how to enjoy the game of golf.

Well, I decided I want to go back to playing a blade putter. Yes, my L.A.B. Mezz.1 Max definitely made me a better putter (you can ask my scramble partners). But sometimes I like to switch it up for the sake of switching it up. And having a cool putter to switch to sure helps.

I recently put a new Powerbilt putter in the bag, a slick blade that was designed by Weston Maughaun, who just happens to live a few miles up the road from where I grew up in Utah.

Honestly, this thing rolls the rock beautifully.

It feels great off the face. It looks really sleek. The orange leather grip is buttery.

It’s everything I want in a putter (other than making me a better putter).

And that’s OK. Because no one can tell me how to enjoy golf (see above).

So if I want to play a putter that isn’t designed to save me strokes? That’s my prerogative. You don’t have to agree with it. Or do it yourself.

But you can at least respect playing a piece of gear simply because you think it’s darn cool.

And I think this Powerbilt putter is cool.

Looks like an elegant putter, a bit like my Spalding TP Mills #3 that I have been playing since I started playing golf. I don’t know if I will ever switch. Would I putt better with something else? Who knows. I do know I putt well with it and that’s one of the strengths of my game :)

I bought the Sausage Boudin Noir putter to play with at home. Changes to face balanced, zero torque or toe hang by moving bits around. Beautifully engineered. but I use my 2011 Scotty Cameron California del Mar on the course. My putting average is around 1.7.

Scotty Cameron Bulls Eye American Classic Blade for me.
Put it in my casket with me when I die.
Looks fabulous, makes me a better putter even though it
Is the hardest putter to hit, AND I can learn to putt from
“the other side” in my after-life! :)

That’s a cool putter. Not a blade, but cool.

I won a Toulon Chicago in a poker game, best blade I’ve ever had in 62 years of golf.

Love the spirit of the article and agree that people should feel free to use whatever clubs they want and that bring joy to the game for them, whether they’re the best fit from a strokes gained perspective or because they simply like the look, feel, color. To each their own!

Curious though, do you get a little kick back for any putters sold through the link you also provide? ;) No judgement. If you love the putter and can arrange a beneficial agreement for both parties, more power to ya!

I’ve always been the believer that play what looks/feels/sounds the best to you…because that confidence in that can help elevate your game too. Thankfully I’m a good putter and do really well with a blade, just can’t get comfortable looking down at something hideous. Same reason I’ve changed irons/drivers over the years, just couldn’t get comfortable with them.

Clicked on this article, and the first pleasant surprise was seeing the elimination of the overbearing ads. THANK YOU! The second pleasant surprise was the article itself. I am all for optimization, but golf is a special game, filled with tradition and beauty. This includes equipment, architecture, clothing, etiquette, etc. Bring back the beauty and artistry of golf! That being said, I love nothing more than shooting a low score in competition while being aided by my equipment. Golf is the best sport on Earth! So many ways to enjoy it.

If you’re not getting paid to shoot the lowest scores possible then go with whatever makes you happy with your game. Love this little article. I play a DF3 because I had no skill at putting but I love my White Hot OG #7. I switch back and forth depending on what my goals are for the round. I may even get some super sexy looking muscle back irons for fun this year. The handicap system equals everything out at the club level so it doesn’t really matter.

The Guys at powerbilt are really building something special. This year is their 110th year anniversary, no corners cut, no details overlooked, just pure performing clubs, and you love to see it.

Oz putters aren’t for everyone. Tried both the center shafted and heel shafted models and just couldn’t get used to them–inside 6 feet–money. Longer putts–garbage. No shame returning to a gorgeous blade.

Nope. Golf is more fun when you score better. And if equipment makes the difference, go for it. No point in making yourself worse. That lip-out happening twice a round, or the 30-footers that leaves you squeeky 6-foot second putts instead of 2-foot gimmies? Now your score is 4 strokes worse – maybe more.

I am a very good putter (I need to have at least one good part of the game). I use an Evnroll ER5 mallet, but a ZT might make me even better. I’m certainly considering it (probably a DF3).

I agree. Zero torque putters just look so odd to me that it’s hard to get used to them when I try them. I will stick with what works for me.

Totally agree with you, with one small suggestion: You could get an old blade ZT putter for well under $100. A MacGregor ZT or a Tommy Armour ZAAP. Best of both worlds.

Fake, ya beat me to it. I got a TA Zaap for a friend of mine for $20 after his 40 yr old Wilson fell apart. Yeah, I’m not playing $399 for any putter let alone a Powerbuilt. Stopped playing their stuff after persimmons went out(they were great, tho)
