Stop Telling Other People How To “Enjoy” Golf!

It shouldn’t have to be said.

But, unfortunately, it seems we all need a reminder.

Golf is a game. It’s meant to be fun, to be enjoyed.

Yet for some odd reason, golfers relish any opportunity to tell a fellow golfer how they should enjoy the game.

I see it way too often. Perhaps it’s because my Twitter feed is full of golf burners that seem to think they have an ownership stake in what makes golf “fun.” Or maybe it’s just because too many golfers are worried about what the outside world thinks.

In any case, you should never let anyone tell you how to find joy in golf.

Sure, there are a few non-negotiable things. Golf has rules. Golf courses have rules. But outside of that (and being a decent human being), you are free to enjoy the game as you see fit.

Do you find joy in playing a set of blade irons? Play them.

Do you find joy in gaming a set of hybrid irons? Play them. Who cares what others think or say?

Heaven forbid you wear long socks or something other than FootJoy (am I doing this right, burners?).

Screw the dress code. Or don’t. I don’t really care.

What I do care about is getting back to making golf fun. I want less policing over meaningless things like what you’re playing, what you’re wearing and how you play, and more reveling in the chance to hit a ball (that doesn’t have to be white) as a way to pass the time.

So listen up.

I don’t care if you walk, ride or push. I don’t care if you wear pleated pants or shorts. A five-way versus a 14-way top on your bag doesn’t make a difference to me. Heck, I don’t care if you wear two gloves instead of one (or none).

Golf is meant to be enjoyed. And the thing that stops a lot of you from enjoying it is the unwritten “rules” imposed by self-righteous people who we don’t know and have no bearing on our happiness.

Come as you are. Play as you are (but play by the rules) and find joy in the game again.

If you must obey just one rule, make it the mythical Rule 35 (there are only 34 in the official rulebook) as invented by the late Ely Callaway: Have fun!

NOT playing by the rules has it’s upside too (except in tournaments or when betting without clear “exceptions). Pick up after you hit “double”? OK with me, and it keeps the game moving. Want to try my new XYZ Super7? Fine with me if you use it once or twice and not count it as a 15th club. A mulligan off the first tee? Sure. Anyway, you get the point. If you’re having fun, and not taking advantage of an opponent, you have my approval, which counts for nothing!

Golf’s worst habit is PGA Tour players SPITTING incessantly, without copping a penalty/fine for doing so. They have to remove hats to shake hands or else, so why not cure spitting publicly the same way?

Observe golf etiquette and everyone will have more fun. Quiet and still when another player is hitting their shot. Be ready when it’s your turn. Fix ball marks. Respect the game, the course and other players.

Unfortunately, you missed the single biggest buzzkill non-issue ruining the joy of the game today. Pace of play bullies who take pleasure in depriving others of the pleasures of being on the course.
Here’s a cheat sheet for all Pace of Play bullies who will, no doubt ignore this because they get more pleasure from bullying and btching.
      1. Politely ask to play through. If denied
      2. Skip a hole or two and double back.
      3.Repeat as needed.
      Non-issue ” resolved”. ⛳

If there is room in front of you, let them play through. No reason they should have to skip a hole because you are playing slow.

In general I agree with you. The one exception is pace of play. Be considerate of your fellow golfers and let them play through if you are slowing down the golfers behind you. You have three minutes to find a lost ball, adhere to it. If you want to engage in a golf ball safari, do it before or after the course opens/closes. An Arccos Golf Study found that slower rounds actually lead to higher scores. Just remember that the players behind you have the same right to have fun, so don’t be an entitled jerk that feels “your fun” is more important than everyone else’s on the course.

The worst part is people complaining about things that bug them but don’t matter. Like people complaining about Aim Point. There’s no objective data that says it takes longer. It’s people just complaining about nothing. Walking around the hole is not quicker. Just play and quit complaining.

Play considerate golf. Keep the pace, let faster players play through, yell fore if you hit it wrong, don’t blast your music etc. Have fun.

Thank you. I have been saying this for *years*, every time someone somewhere (i.e. social media) tells everyone else which tees to play from; tells everyone else that they’d have more fun if they did what *I*, and ONLY what I, do; tells everyone else not to play music (that they can’t hear, ANYWAY, because they’re always 100 or more yards away from everyone else, and NO ONE plays music THAT loudly on a golf course); tells everyone else that iron covers are for…well, maybe that one’s ok…

No, seriously, everyone just STFU about everyone else. If they’re not holding up the group behind them and they’re not spitting sunflower seed shells on the greens, live and let live.

Maybe you haven’t experienced it, but some numbnuts do play music loudly on the golf course. Thankfully it’s not common, but I have had the experience of putting on a 150 yd par 3 and being able to clearly hear the loud music being played by the group waiting at the teebox. If you can hear it clearly enough to understand the words, the music is too damned loud! I like music, I’m all for it. I just don’t want to hear a freaking song while I’m putting or teeing off. Those that play music on the course full blast are inconsiderate. Now get off my lawn! :)

Some really good comments. I stopped caring about what others wear or play a while ago. Of course, taking a jab at friends wearing joggers is required, but I dont care and are actually thinking about buying some too.

Oh, and for those that do not like my irons covers, I don’t care what you think either.

I realized the other day that I don’t look at anyone’s bag or clubs anymore. I certainly used to look at what everyone was playing. Somewhere along the way I stopped caring. I also don’t care what club they hit on a par 3. I might pull out a 5 hybrid while all the others hit irons. This happened the other day and I was the only one putting.

Just play under 2-hrs per 9-holes. I don’t care what you wear, what you play, or if you wall or ride. Just keep up and if you lose a bet, have cash. I don’t take venmo.

I don’t know if this term is still used (I’m not as young as I once was) but when I was younger, people would say “gatekeeping” to describe people who could decide the fandom or commitment of others i.e. you’re not a real fan of this musician unless you’ve heard the live bootlegs, can’t be a fan of a sports team unless you were there for the championships back in the 80’s. So many people would have fun playing golf if they didn’t feel the constant judgment.
