Sub 70 699 Pro Irons

It seems certain there won’t be any shortage of smokin’ deals on golf equipment in 2020. As such, many golfers are in “wait and see” mode, wondering just how deep the discounts might get. That said, for a company like Sub 70 and its 699 Pro irons, the purpose is to give golfers factory-direct pricing on every piece of equipment regardless of the day or context. (See: global pandemics)

The Skinny

The 699 Pro iron from Sub 70 sits squarely in the Players Distance category of irons. Compared to the standard 699 iron, the Pro version features a thinner topline, less offset and a black, Tour PVD finish. At a standard price of $89 per club, it’s tough to think of many other brands that offer better value in the category.

Sub 70 699 Pro Specifics

In 2019, the Sub 70 699 iron model finished sixth in the Players Distance category of Most Wanted testing. That might not sound like much, until you consider it finished ahead of Callaway, PING and Titleist. That’s an accolade worthy of some refrigerator space.

The marginally modified Sub 70 699 Pro is designed for the golfer who prefers a more classic head shape but can benefit from additional ball speed and forgiveness. Contemporary competitors include the TaylorMade P790, Titleist T200 and PING i500.

In the Players Distance category, terms like compact and minimal are still relative. Models in this segment of the market tend to have a smaller footprint, narrower toplines and less offset than typical game-improvement irons. In order to achieve certain performance characteristics, the clubs aren’t going to look exactly like a traditional muscle-back or smaller cavity-back iron.

Yes, the Sub 70 699 Pro has less offset from 4-PW than the slightly larger 699 model. Specifically, the 699 Pro 4-iron has 3.5 mm of offset whereas the 699 measures 5.7 mm in the 4-iron. The amount of offset decreases to 1.5 mm and 1.25 mm in the 9-iron, respectively.

For comparison, Mizuno’s MP 20 HMB has 3.6 mm of offset in the 4-iron. The salient point is that most irons in the burgeoning Players Distance category tend to be thinner and less bulky than the most forgiving irons. However, don’t expect them to resemble the butter knife in your place setting, either.

Sub 70 699 Pro Design

Many DTC (Direct-to-Consumer) brands like Sub 70 don’t have a fully staffed R&D department. Conversely, major brands invest heavily in R&D to stay at the forefront of innovation and construction. So, it takes a bit of time for cutting-edge technology to filter down to third-party manufacturers that contract with smaller companies like Sub 70. Additionally, the more complex the design, the longer it takes for this technology trickle-down to materialize.

With that, the basic tech story of the Sub 70 699 Pro irons is reminiscent of PXG’s first-generation 0311 irons. This is true at least insofar as the 699 Pro features a TPE-injected hollow-core body. It also features a thin (1.7 mm) 455 carpenter steel face. To be clear, PXG’s face was .2 mm thinner and it used a more expensive material (HT-1770). As always, the degree to which differences in materials, design and technology impact performance will vary based on the individual. Distilling these differences into actionable information is the very basis of our Most Wanted testing platform.

Context and Everything Else

Right now, the only certainty is whatever world we left in January 2020 won’t be the same one we encounter in 2021. Between now and then, we fully expect near industry-wide price cuts on current product lines.

This pending liquidation will likely move a lot of inventory. However, any short-term price reduction might reset buyers’ expectations around what constitutes a fair market price. If the driver that was $500 two months ago becomes $299 or $349, it might be tough to return to pre-pandemic prices too quickly.

Another consideration is the entire retail ecosystem. Frankly, golf retail is set up to benefit the companies first, retailers second and then, possibly, the consumer. An overhaul is long overdue. Brick-and-mortar retail stores are expensive. Holding a bunch of inventory is expensive. Green-grass accounts fight to preserve whatever minuscule margins exist by the time it factors in all the costs of doing business.

The point is, a DTC structure is too limiting as a single distribution channel for large brands, though it offers some serious advantages over the typical big-box approach. For manufacturers with a major retail presence, any efforts toward DTC mean likely undercutting some portion of the retail relationship. Simply, the more Callaway sells directly from its website, the less it sells through PGA TOUR Superstore. And conflicts of interest generally aren’t good for sales figures.

Conversely, companies that used the DTC model as a foundation for distribution (see PXG) have apparently weathered this downturn much better than those without a robust DTC platform.

It’s no secret that value-conscious companies like Sub 70 need to win on price. In the short term, this might be more challenging because we’re going to see the deepest discounts in the last decade. Still, when prices become relatively equal, people care about service. Customers want to feel like the company isn’t some callous, faceless enterprise.

With that said, if there’s a defining characteristic of Sub 70, it’s that owner Jason Hiland is entirely committed to a different level of customer service.

Have a question? Give him a call. Literally, it’s his cell phone number on the website.

I love what Sub 70 is doing. I had the opportunity to hit the 699 and 699 pro today and loved them. I am waiting for full fitting to decide on shaft. I am currently playing the Ping i500. My main complaint with the i500 is the sound/feel and that a few times a round they fly -5-10 yards longer. Anyone have anything similar with the 699 pro?

After reading the reviews on here as well as the reviews on the MGS forums I placed an order for the 699 Pro. in black with graphite shafts. Received an email from Cody to inform me that they are currently on back order but not a problem. Not surprised either since reading all the positive reviews on them! Plus everything coming to Hawaii normally takes awhile to get here anyway. Can’t wait for it to get here!

I’ll vouch for Jason and Sub 70. I recently purchased the 699 Pros couldn’t be more satisfied with my purchase and the customer service experience. Jason took the time to listen to what I needed for my game and through an in depth conversation, suggested the specs that would fit my game the best. I fully expect that black finish to wear over time especially since I’m a range rat and my local club doesn’t have to best range balls. That’s the choice I’ve made and so far I’m liking the looks of them after over a month of use. The irons have also gotten the attention of the the people I play with. Each person asking about them always comments on how they’re some of the best looking irons they’ve seen. Performance wise, I’m striking my iron shots the best I have in years. I’m consistently hitting at least half the greens in regulation which is a big improvement over the 1/3 I averaged last season. My misses are also much improved as I haven’t lost a ball in 8 rounds with an iron shot. I never knew what it was like having to actually retire a golf ball because it had been played so much. If you tend to miss left as I did, the reduced offset will help immensely! If you’re in the market for new irons, it’s worth your time to give Sub 70 a try!

I totally agree with the SUB 70 clubs. I have the regular 699’s. Now have 7 rounds on them and they are great. Just like you I have not lost a ball with the irons and as a 12 handicap hitting 50% of the greens in regulation and shooting a 75 yesterday I’m extremely pleased. Jason and his team are excellent.

Interesting review and thoughts on discounts and pricing during the 2020 season; it is kind of ironic that we are looking at discounts on equipment, but around here we are seeing increased greens fees. We have had a couple of discussions about some candid comments made by course employees about making as much money as fast as possible at the cost of customer service.
I got fit a couple of years ago at Club Champion and while I am happy with what I have, I keep wondering what I might have missed. Might have to check these out. Thanks and keep up the great work.

I’m extremely tempted to give these a shot. My current gamers (850 Forged) are getting a bit long in the tooth. At the price, even if they’re not a fit I don’t think I would have buyer’s remorse.

I visited the site, but the 699 Pro, in right hand, only gave me the option for a single AW…it didn’t give an option for a full set. Sub70 is either having stock issues or there’s a bug in their code.

Another option to consider is that you can do a combo set of 699/699Pro if that is for you and Jason decide. When I talked to Jason about my game and my needs we settled on straight 699’s although I was coming from an iron that was more like the 699Pro. Could not be happier with my decision. Now if only I could get a tee time this easy I would be all set.

The 699 pro irons look nice and not dissimilar to the Ping G710. I do wonder how well the black finish will look in six or 12 month’s time with some general wear and tear.

The price looks very nice indeed. Would be good to see an independent review of how these irons perform with a Trackman or Quad. Would I buy a set based on a handful of reviews? The jury is still out…anyway, being based in the UK I have no way of trying a fitting out. Can’t guess what type of shaft would suit me. I would consider buying the heads only.

Hey guys good looking irons , I have purchased a set of irons from a DTC company , Haywood golf they custom build clubs as well. I went for a fitting took all my specs put together from the fitting to Haywood who proceeded to put together a set for me. I upgraded to graphite shafts and upgraded the grips I should have them in my bag in the next 2 weeks. Saved myself approximately 400 dollars going the DTC route.

There’s a reason it has dramatically changed a number of industries including clothing, jewelry/watches, mattresses, shaving supplies, etc etc. We proudly work with Snell on the golf ball side because we think that they perform an incredible product from both a price AND performance stand point. Hey Javier thanks for the question. I’m sure Chris will answer but I thought I’d respond too.

I personally think that in person fittings will always have a place in the golf business. We generally recommend getting fitted locally if possible and then we can build any clubs ordered to those specs. Sometimes it’s not possible to visit a fitter for any number of reasons…maybe it’s too expensive…maybe the local fitters just aren’t good…maybe you don’t have time to do it or don’t want to have someone paid on commission doing your fitting. If that’s the case then the remote phone/email/text/online tool fitting process is a great option.

      Chris Nickel

Javier – Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you. My initial thought is I have absolutely no idea what’s going to happen and frankly neither does anyone else.

Now, that said, there are several directions this could go, but the first bit depends on what elements of a retail fitting environment a true DTC company can mimic. The DTC model is very efficient in several regards and allows the brand more control over the customer experience. In the case of Sub 70, it’s such a defining characteristic, my hunch is it would be very hard to outsource that part to someone else.. At this point, I’m not sure any small DTC brand is doing enough business to really impact a major fitter like True Spec/Cool Clubs/ Club Champion.

Also, most fitters claim to be brand agnostic, to some degree. They also offer a build quality and spec tolerance which is probably cost aversive considering the massive volume major OEMs sell. They also tend to be quite a bit more expensive, so we’re possibly dealing with different target customers.

Even if DTC takes off, so to speak, there’s a ceiling depending on how the brand is organized. Major OEMs have to consider relationships with retailers and any meaningful shift toward DTC would likely come at the expense of the retailer. Smaller DTC brands like Sub 70 can only pump out so many sets of irons and wedges because the operation is well, smaller. So, if these companies want to find growth opportunities beyond increasing current capacity, it very well may come by working with a major fitter, which is what we’ve seen with Ben Hogan/Club Champion.

Hope somewhere in my incoherent rambling there’s something useful. Be well and thanks for your support of MGS!

I am currently in the middle of my demo with the 699 Pro Irons. They are certainly longer by about a club than my current X2 Hot Pro Irons. To be fair, they aren’t obscenely longer, though. The top line of the club is thicker but it doesn’t just yell game Inprovement iron. I think the black finish is a good look but it’s not for me since one day at the range and it shows obvious strikes on the face. I like the solid feel of the iron and the sound is nice. I had several guys turn their heads and look when I struck the iron pure. Off-center strikes were not penalized severely. I have found my iron….as soon as the satin finish ones hit the market. Kudos to Jason Hiland who is willing to speak to his customers and make us feel as though we are part of his company. This company truly redefined expectations.

If you have read Sub70 reviews you know their product’s quality and price value as well as their after sale attention for customer satisfaction to be excellent!
I am pleased to say my two friends and I can certainly add to how Jason and his staff impressed us.
My 82 years old friend shoots his age and at times less!
Jason examined his swing and stats and fitted him with a full set of irons which he enjoyed all last year.
To our surprise when Jason examined the swing and stats of my other friend, Jason advised him to keep his existing clubs!
Jason said to work on improving the sequence of your swing before fitting him with a set of clubs.
He gave my friend a few drills to work on and told him to come back for another fitting.
The Sub70 reviews by their loyal customers are truly the best marketing money cannot buy..

Smart piece on passion-based company. with PXG selling similar 0211 at $95 (including graphite shaft models) through May, gutsy or goofy to launch 699 Pro now? would love to see comparison test of these two worthy competitors. Cheers

Thanks Joseph! Hopefully both irons were in the same category for MGS Most Wanted testing and those results will be available soon. I can tell you without a doubt that we have no interest in slashing prices on products because we aren’t price gouging and making massive margins. We also won’t release new replacement models if there isn’t a serious advantage. I’d be really curious how guys feel that pay full price for something and then 3 months later it’s 40% off. We want our customers to feel confident that their investment is solid. If you ever have any questions just let us know. Cheers!

      Hi!
I actually own a set of 0211 and received a 699pro in test from Jason.
I own a skytrak and compared both and despite a huge difference in shafts (my pug has a Mitsubishi met and is fitted +0.5 2up, vs 699pro came with a kbs tour 110… 30g heavier) I have to say that the 699pro overperform my 0211.
First the blade is more compact so more pleasant, also less offset makes it really sleek.
      Also love the feedback.
Both feel very soft and buttery but I got more distance with sub pro despite having a heavier steel shaft vs a graphite….
Finish with buying a full set of 639 cs without even testing because I 7nderstood the quality of this brand

Thank you for providing that info Giulio and I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the 699 Pro! We wouldn’t be doing this if the equipment wasn’t every bit as good as the other options out there…we just want to work directly with the customers so that the pricing is more affordable and we can offer better service. If you ever need anything just let us know. Thanks!

I’ve actually spoken with Sub 70’s CEO, Jason Hiland, on the phone about these clubs – 699 Pros. He’s very genuine and won’t BS you about his products’ features & benefits. His commitment to customer service and relationship-building is impressive. I have yet to purchase new irons, but Sub 70 will be a finalist when I do.

Wow, did you guys put a bug in my house. I have been doing research on these exact clubs for the last few days. I would love to get a demo to compare the pro versus the standard 699. I have some callaway xr pro’s that I want to change out. And I think these pro’s may be the winner. I need to swing them first but they look really good.

I purchased the regular 699 4-P a several months ago. I demoed them first through the company’s demo program. They also have a trade in program which offers fair values. I traded in Callaway Steelhead Pros. It was a super easy process. I am really enjoying the 699s. Great clubs at a great price, and yes, great customer service.

Love my Sub-70 3 wood and wedge. I hit all sorts of ones at Club Champion when I was fitting, but after demoing the Sub-70 clubs, I was sold. Plus, they’re not kidding when they say Jason cares. He spent almost an hour with me talking fitting, shaft specs, and just golf and life in general. Never pushed me to buy anything, told me his opinions that up-charging for shafts doesn’t always mean up-performance and when my clubs came, I’ve been nothing but impressed.

I love what sub70 is doing. These pro versions look amazing. Great article, Chris! It’s definitely a crazy time we’re in, but I do think the DTC model adds more agility from a business approach. I talked to Jason over the phone, and he’s A+++. I can’t wait to see more disruption from them in the future.

Thank you! The DTC sales model is definitely the way of the future…and the big boys are going to realize it at some point. The old model with constant product releases, enormous retail distribution, marketing/sales budgets through the roof, etc just doesn’t make sense.
