The Best “Buy It For Life” Golf Products (According to Our Staff)

In a commercial world that entices us endlessly to upgrade our gear to the latest and greatest, it’s refreshing when you find a product that withstands the test of time.

Since he was a young teenager, my now 51-year-old dad has used the same Honda lawnmower to cut the grass. For nearly 40 years, this beast of a machine has seen him through college, adulthood and more. Have better mowers come out since? Sure. But why get something new when the ol’ Honda is still churning and burning?

The same applies to golf gear. While we’re wise to encourage you to upgrade your gear when it’s starting to hurt your game, in the breath its our job to tell you about gear that you can buy once, and have it for life.

Here are our favorite “buy it for life” golf products.

PING Hoofer

How many old PING Hoofer bags do you see walking around your local course? The best stand bag of this generation withstands the test of time, no doubt about it.

Not only is the design timeless, but functionality doesn’t age. A good stand, great pockets and great zippers make this bag the one to buy once, and have for life.

Bushnell Rangefinders

Check your buddy’s bag. What kind of rangefinder do they have? Bushnell Rangefinders are built like tanks, and the replaceable battery makes them more than future proof. Some of our staff still uses Bushnell devices from last decade.

An honorable mention to the Bushnell Phantom. That little GPS just refuses to give up the ghost.

Club Glove Travel Gear

There’s no travel gear that’s more bullet proof than Club Glove. Your golf travel bag takes a beating, so why not buy one that you’ll never have to replace? Thick straps, fantastic zippers and an ultra-durable construction make Club Gloves travel luggage the best-in-class.

Orange Whip

The only warm-up tool you’ll ever need, and the only warm-up tool that’ll last you for the rest of your life. It doesn’t wear, it doesn’t break, and it’s always reliable when you’re trying to combat those first tee nerves.

Scotty Cameron Divot Tool

When I asked our staff to come up with their favorite “buy it for life” products, multiple staff members instantly chimed in and mentioned the Scotty Cameron Divot tool. Clean, classic and built to last, it’s the only divot tool you’ll ever need (unless you lose it, of course).

Owala Water Bottles

Staying hydrated on the course is a must. Keeping the bev cool is also a non-negotiable. Owala water bottles perform their intended function flawlessly. It’s almost a right of passage ot have a few dents and dings in your bottle. Another sure sign that Owala is an easy choice for our favorite “buy it for life” products.

The only reason you’ll need a second or third? They have too many cool colors to choose from!

Clicgear Push Carts

There are few, if any golfers who have managed to defeat a Clicgear push cart. I swear there are some Clicgear carts out there with more miles than my dad’s 40-year-old lawn mower. They’re priced a little higher than some of the competition, but that’s because they’re built to last.

melin Hats

The golf hat is one of the most replaceable pieces of gear in your bag. How many have you sweat through? melin hats are built different. They’re designed to withstand any amount of weather, and it’s the only hat I’ve worn regularly for multiple years without the sweatband deteriorating or the hat becoming limp and lifeless.

For my money, they are well worth the investment.

I cannot believe that somebody who travels a lot doesn`t use a Sun Mountain Club Glider. It is by far the best travel cover!

Those divot tools are horrible for any greens though…

You need single – prong; or a really thick tee.

also confirm as much as I love my ClubGlove glider, it’s not buy for life. this is my second one. parts of it do not stand up well to repeated air travel. maybe nothing does and it is still more durable than most, i don’t know.
but it’s definitely not a buy it for life item for me.

I had a Club Glove travel golf bag and used it maybe 8 times, and USAirways destroyed it. I have now had an OGIO bag for almost 10 years, I use it for probably 12 flight legs (i.e. a RT flight with one connection each way is 4 legs, the bag being handled 4 times) each year, and it’s only now showing a small hole in the bottom and a slightly skewed wheel. I love the particular pattern (kinda camo, kinda Stars & Stripes) and will not replace this one until they come back with this particular pattern or this bag fails. But I’m on Team OGIO forever now, because of how durable this bag has been.

In my collection of divot tools, I have a Scotty. I used it a couple of times but it’s too bulky. I do have a favorite divot tool and it is a “for life” accessory, IMO. It fits nicely in my pocket, has a magnetic ball marker (which I use as a spare) and is a joy to use to repair divots.
I also have a PING Hoofer. I used it a couple of rounds and retired it. It was a waste of money, in my opinion. I have never had as much trouble getting clubs in and out of any other bag as I did with the Hoofer. And the legs were wonky and unreliable. My game is frustrating enough. I don’t need added frustration from an uncooperative bag. I prefer the random brand bag (Pebble Beach brand?) I picked up at Costco for $120. Now the Hoofer collects dust in the garage holding the irons that I don’t use anymore, either. Ironically, storing old clubs was the reason I picked up the cheaper bag from Costco. I am not sure how the Hoofer keeps scoring so highly in all the bag reviews, but that was not my experience.
I’m reluctant to get a Melin hat. For one reason, I’m a Boonie hat guy. Being bald, I do not want a hat tan line. But back when I had hair and wore a baseball hat, sweat stains were the primary reason for retiring a hat. There’s no way I’m paying that much money for a hat that I’m going to toss out for looking gross after a couple of rounds. Shelta hats are my “for life” hat. They are also not cheap (less than the Melin, however). But they have superior solar protection. The brim holds its shape in the wind. It’s washable. The camo patterns mask sweat stains. And they last forever (well, my oldest Shelta hat is over 6 years old, and I wear it a lot).
Your mileage may vary… mine certainly did.

Don’t sweat the Melin looking bad after a few rounds, you just run water over them and the sweat rings rinse right out. I’ve used mild soap on my white one to make it look good as new.

holy crap, I just looked at the prices of those melin hats. My wife would kill me if I dropped 90 bucks on a hat(considering I have a wall full of $30 one..haha).

All nice gear, especially if you work at MGS and get it free.

If one has to use thier own money, many better choices in all categories. Scotty Cameron divot tool? Come on man.

And the best drink tumblers are Target brand. Hold temps better than Yeti.

      Nope!
I bought ONE Hoofer 14-way one time – it BROKE on the inside within 6 months, ripping while I was simply trying to insert and/or pull my clubs out.
And the padding thing for the back is asinine as it’s a rain hood. One day it rained, I had to take out the hood while I was carrying it for 18 holes – I had no back support.
I will never buy it again
