The Do’s and Don’ts of Topgolf

Have you been to Topgolf? It’s the first place I was able to experience golf together with my wife.

Topgolf is, by and large, Callaway’s cash cow. Why? Because it’s fun, no-frills and a easy way for the non-golfer to find joy in such a frustrating game.

Its success is largely dependent on those who are new to the game or completely unfamiliar with it. That said, there’s still a host of “serious” golfers that enjoy the occasional round of Angry Birds and a few pretzel bites.

Social media has been a sounding board of opinions on proper etiquette at Topgolf. I’ve seen too many videos of golfers being ridiculed for bringing their own clubs or going through their pre-shot routine like they’re standing on the first tee at Augusta National.

I figured it was time to set the record straight. Whether you’ve never been or you’re a regular, here are the do’s and don’ts of Topgolf.

Do: Wear a glove (if you want)

I typically don’t wear a glove when I hit golf balls but for those who do it’s never a bad idea to bring your glove to Topgolf. The last thing you need is to inadvertently heave a driver down range because it’s too slippery. A glove is also a pretty good idea for a new golfer whose hands aren’t used to the friction caused by the grip.

Don’t: Use a rangefinder

Best Rangefinder 2024

While you might be tempted to bring a rangefinder to really dial in your distances, Topgolf’s interactive user interface provides distances to each of the flags and key areas of the “course.” If I see you shooting a flag with your Bushnell at Topgolf, I’m telling you to put it away. It’s not that serious, bro!

Do: Bring that new driver you’ve been anxious to hit

While it’s not uncommon to see people bring their set of clubs to Topgolf, I’m admittedly on the fence on whether this is psycho behavior or not. I do see some benefit, especially if you live somewhere with a cold and snowy winter. If you’ve picked up a new driver in January and won’t be able to play it until the snow melts in April, I think it’s appropriate to take a few swings at the local Topgolf (they all have climate-controlled hitting bays).

Don’t: Wear golf shoes

Our tester liked the spikes on the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA Spiked Golf Shoe

There is absolutely no reason for you to wear golf shoes to Topgolf. Especially spikes. They’ll do more damage to the artificial turf (and perhaps your ACL) than anything else. If you MUST wear golf shoes, opt for something like an Air Jordan that looks more like a casual shoe. Don’t make it obvious!

Do: Have fun

We’ve reached the point in the piece where I tell you to take my advice with a grain of beer salt. Topgolf is meant to be fun. In my opinion, things like rangefinders, golf shoes and more take away from the overall experience and make it feel too much like golf.

Topgolf shouldn’t feel like golf. It should be relaxed, frustration-free and, most of all, a time to enjoy good company. A reservation isn’t required, but if you have a big Friday night planned and don’t want to sit on a waitlist, you may want to schedule something ahead of time.

In short, do whatever you need to do to make Topgolf fun, not frustrating, especially if you’re bringing a first-time golfer along for the ride.

At the top golf by my house, almost everyone I have ever see walk in brings their own clubs. If you are a golfer and don’t want to swing your own clubs, don’t go

Not sure where the author has been but every Toogolf and Driveshack I’ve been to has the worst clubs with worn grips and by far the worst balls on the planet. No point in bringing your new driver or your own clubs with balls this bad. I love golf but I’d rather go bowling than spend way too much money on mediocre food hacking at crappy balls with terrible clubs

I’ve gone to and enjoy this type of venue and will again.
I take a handful of my own clubs not whole set and bag, I wear a glove but not golf shoes, I couldn’t care less about someone thinking I’m “That guy” as another poster mentioned. I am too busy enjoying myself.
Is it overpriced? Yes but I know what I getting into before I leave the house.
Locally we have a venue called Big Shots (which recently merged with Top Golf).
I also recently visited Top Golf in San Antonio. They share the same equipment and unfortunately crappy golf balls. When Big Shots first opened they used newer fair quality balls having been to both locations in the past 3 months it is my only disappointment. I mean really poor-quality balls, rejects from golf ball refurbisher’s probably.

Treat it like a bowling outing-if you’re going with friends, leave your strike ball and your spare ball and bag and shoes at home. If going to practice, do whatever you want to do discreetly. Absolutely no shame in taking your clubs or that $600 driver.

No, don’t wear a glove or bring your own clubs. This is arcade golf, for God’s sake. You’ll instantly become that guy. Just go and have fun. In my experience, the try-hards do the worst at TopGolf because the games are goals based. Nobody cares about your stroke or your handicap in the bays.

TopGolf is goofy golf – I haven’t been to one in years. It’s expensive to ‘play’, drinks and food are over-priced for the quality. I get the appeal for someone who just wants to have fun, drink and yell over the music… I’m sure it’s a great business model, as it’s always packed.
But as a golfer, I never go. You can aim at a target on the left, hit something 40 yards on the right and get ‘points’. Nah, not for me.

For one. The balls are not regulation. They don’t carry nearly as far as those you would have it your bag. As has been mentioned if you are just getting a feel for your club then fine. Otherwise those that TC provides do the trick just fine. It really is a place to have fun and not so much to do some serious work on your game. JMO

Why wouldn’t you bring your own clubs to a range? What am I missing?

I have a membership to topgolf I share with another guy. We use it as a driving range. A much as I practice it’s cheaper than going to the local range. Costs me $30 a month and it’s a lot more comfortable from Nov to March than my local range.
