Why Does The Toulon Small Batch Charlotte Putt Only To The Left?

Charlotte, North Carolina, the site of the PGA Championship this week, is the inspiration for the latest Toulon Small Batch limite- edition putter.

As it turns out, this new Rolex-steel putter was not inspired by Charlotte’s golf history. Instead, the muse for Toulon’s Charlotte was fast cars and NBA legend Larry Johnson.

OK, I added that last part about Larry Johnson. I can’t help it. When I think of Charlotte, I think of the Charlotte Hornets.

Getting back on track, Toulon was thinking about Charlotte being the home of NASCAR when they designed this putter.

Doing 60 in a B60

The Toulon Small Batch Charlotte is a NASCAR-lover’s dream putter. From the Plymouth Superbird engraved on the sole to the Toulon-branded car company logos, this putter runs on high-octane petrol.

My favorite thing is that the Toulon cavity logo is based on the Champion spark plug logo. Toulon is either saying they are reliable like spark plugs or champions. Either way, I love the boldness of the logo’s statement.

The Toulon Charlotte putter is built upon the chassis of a champion as well: the PING B60.

Toulon took the B60 design and souped it up with modern horsepower. The Toulon Charlotte is heavier than the original B60 with much of that weight residing in the face and the flange. This modification gives the Charlotte more of a modern feel and balance.

The bold 355 G on the neck is another nice muscle car aesthetic. It’s too bad that a V-8-appropriate 440-gram head would be too heavy for play.

I’m still Larry Johnson fixated

Apologies for those of you just looking for putter talk but I need to circle back to Larry Johnson for a bit. After playing on one the most dominant college teams at UNLV, Johnson was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets as the No. 1 overall pick in 1991.

During the early 1990s, Johnson and crew made the Charlotte Hornets a fun team to watch. The only thing more fun to watch was his alter ego “Grandmama” in his Converse commercials.

Stay out of the lane when Granny is driving.

Compared to the Plymouth, the Toulon B60 Superbird is a bargain at $1,800

At $1,800, Toulon Small Batch putters are not intended for the masses. These are premium collectibles marketed toward the golfer with deep pockets. They do only make 75 of these, after all.

The Toulon Small Batch Charlotte may catch the eye of another well-to-do demographic: the car collector.

If you are a SuperBird or even a Roadrunner collector, where the price of the car is well into the six-figure range, paying $1,800 for a putter that matches your treasured muscle car doesn’t even move the fiscal needle.

Seeing Plymouth Roadrunners sell for $300,000 makes me wish I had bought every one I saw when I was in high school. Add all of the mid-1960’s VW buses to that wish list as well.

Regardless, the Toulon Small Batch Charlotte is an interesting beefed-up spin on a classic PING design, flavored with the trappings of NASCAR. Like all of the Small Batch putters, I expect this release will sell out quickly. Especially since it may pique the interest of car folks as well as golf folks.

Just imagine how hot a commodity this putter would be if it also had a gold front tooth and a Converse logo.
