LIV Signs Rick Shiels As Ambassador

For the past two weeks, Rick Shiels had been teasing an important announcement.

Most followers of the YouTube content creator weren’t exactly thrilled with the drawn-out process. The most-liked comment on the second teaser video posted to X was, “Imagine thinking you are so big you need to drag an announcement for 3 weeks.”

Given recent news of YouTube golfers heralding their new ownership stakes in niche equipment companies, many assumed Shiels was building up to something mundane.

It turns out that is not the case.

Shiels became the first full-time YouTube golfer to sign with LIV. He will be creating content with LIV players including YouTube star Bryson DeChambeau.

“This is not me playing in LIV Golf events,” Shiels said. “I’m going to be making some unbelievable content at every single LIV Golf event.”

Shiels explained that we can expect several different forms of YouTube content, which will live on his own channel. His “Breaking 75” series will take place at each LIV venue; there will be a “10-Shot Challenge” at each tournament; Shiels will participate in five-man scrambles with LIV teams; there will be 2 vs. 2 matches between LIV players; he will be a part of instruction sessions with LIV pros; and Shiels is also hosting a podcast series with LIV players.

The first video, which has already been filmed, will feature Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka.

It’s the first major investment LIV is making in the YouTube golf space.

What does it mean?

This move makes sense for everyone involved

While it’s an eye-catching move for LIV to sign Shiels, there are no real surprises here.

Shiels started on YouTube more than 12 years ago. He was among the first to turn a meaningful profit and is about to eclipse three million subscribers, a mark that outpaces everyone else in the golf category. His videos have been viewed nearly a billion times.

However, Shiels doesn’t have anywhere near the same “market share” he used to, given the dramatic rise in competition.

Of his 25 most popular videos in the channel’s history, none of them came in the last 18 months. Viewership on his channel has been down slightly—at a time when more people are flocking to YouTube for their golf entertainment.

Don’t get me wrong, Shiels is still a relevant character on YouTube but I wouldn’t put him in the top 10-15 channels. His act has just worn stale over the past few years as newer, more exciting personalities have come along.

Signing with LIV is financial security and a rebrand for his channel, although some fans will be turned off by the move.

Another reason this isn’t surprising: Shiels has connections to the Saudis. Performance54—a marketing and PR firm owned by the Saudis and that works with LIV/Golf Saudi—is an owner in Shiels’ company as well. You can dig a lot deeper into that with John Barba’s investigative piece he published in September 2022.

Last month, Shiels released a podcast saying there would be fewer episodes and fewer YouTube videos being published on his channel in the coming weeks. He had been producing less content over the last couple of months in 2024.

“That’s because we have got some outrageous, incredible, mind-blowing plans for 2025,” Shiels said at the time. “And that is not an exaggeration.”

When images circulated of Shiels standing in front of the exact same backdrop for promotional videos as other LIV golfers have, it became obvious what that news would be.

As for LIV, going with the content creation route is an easy decision they should have made years ago.

LIV’s ratings are abysmal as traditional golf on TV has been declining. Both LIV and the PGA Tour are now scrambling to invest more in YouTube golf.

On the Tour side, we have seen the Creator Classic evolving into a three-event series for 2025. They also established a Creator Council to create more official ties with YouTubers and other influencers in the game.

Maybe LIV’s only path forward for gaining real traction is to sign YouTubers and create videos with its players. Had it gone all-in on that concept from the beginning, we might be having a completely different conversation.

Shiels is a solid name to grab and I’m sure there will be more YouTuber signings in the future.

The pro golf world is changing dramatically

Golf as an entertainment product on TV is continuing to suffer.

The Tour is getting shelled early in 2025. Final-round viewership for The American Express last week was down 56 percent which is in line with some of the decreases we saw in Hawaii.

As the kids would say, there is “negative infinity” buzz for Tour golf right now.

We have Justin Thomas writing a letter to his fellow players begging them to consider more on-course interviews.

That is great and everything … but the Tour’s TV product is atrocious for other reasons. One study done this weekend concluded that only 1.2 golf shots are shown per minute on a Tour telecast. More than 40 percent of the shots shown are putts. And fans get inundated with commercials along the way.

Why would we watch that?

TGL, the Tour-backed simulator league, has some good things going for it but looks to be more of a “background noise” show. After two weeks of decent ratings, peaking at 1.05 million, viewership for the third match cratered to 682,000. The average age of the viewer is only 51, a lot younger than the Tour’s traditional broadcast. I think it’s fine for Tuesday nights in the winter but the novelty is wearing off—it doesn’t look to be anything approaching a game-changer at this point.

LIV has a new TV deal with Fox Sports that could be beneficial. The league has a long uphill climb given how last year’s championship couldn’t even crack 100,000 viewers.

There is a lot of apathy across the board. I don’t watch nearly as much golf as I once did.

Golf entertainment is becoming more decentralized as fans can watch a better product on demand. Check out this video of Tiger giving Grant Horvat a lesson and tell me that isn’t way more entertaining than seeing Sepp Straka win The American Express. It’s not even close.

What happens next?

In some form or fashion, you are going to be seeing a lot more YouTubers showing up on the Tour and LIV.

It’s a matter of survival. Without them, traditional golf coverage could wilt into oblivion.

You’re not the only one. I checked his subscriber count the day this story came out. On January 24 he was at 2.94 million. As of January 29, he’s shed 30,000 subscribers, down to 2.91 million. I’m sure he’s receiving a nice payday from the Saudi government, but the very early returns to his YouTube channel from joining LIV are not promising for Rick.

So much hate for LIV and Rick. I’ll never understand it. From the author of this article to pearl clutching readers.

The PGA is peddling a broken product. From rounds that take 5:30, to a product that only exists due to the work of unpaid volunteers, to players who are as interesting as drying paint.

I’ll continue to watch the bulk of my golf viewing on YouTube. The 4 majors are the only interesting tournaments on broadcast TV. You mock LIV for low ratings, yet the PGA is shedding viewers and sponsors at a prodigious rate.

Good for Rick, good for LIV, and good for every YouTube content creator.

You don’t understand that people don’t want to support a league that was spun up primarily to sanitize a brutally repressive regime’s international reputation and also don’t want to support the athletes/media who shill for it?

The best part of Rick Shiels’ driver reviews are when he hits the regular and Max versions of the lineup the best but then he will switch to a low spin or triple diamond version with a smaller head that “is more suited to my game and swing” and he will hit those drivers noticeably worse but still put a lot of emphasis on how those pro models perform for him. Just put the regular or Max models in your bag Rick and hit more fairways and stop pretending like you are an elite driver of the ball.

This news means I will never watch any content Rick puts online. I have also noticed I am watching less golf I think I am tired of hearing how hard done by all these golfers are living like royalty while playing a sport that has lower viewership than volleyball. It’s a niche sport that CEOs like to play, between that and the Tiger Woods fascination (deserved) is the only reason the Tour gets the sponsorship money they do. Look at the money on tour pre-Tiger, I think that’s the reality of what may happen down the road. In fact I could see if Tiger starts winning on the champions tour that it gets better ratings than any other tour…then what happens to the money!?!?!?

Watching golf is everyday for me. I was disappointed when some of the best players jumped in order to “grow” the game. Total BS. They said the PGA Tour minimum tournament appearances of 15 was too many. How many LIV events are there? Limited field, no cut guaranteed purse, is that growing the game? LIV does not sponsor growth leagues, university teams, women’s golf, first tee or drive, chip and putt events. How does LIV grow the game? It’s all about the money and the culture. I don’t like the LIV product. Don’t pretend it’s good and don’t force it on us.

The PGA Tour, working with the US Homeland and NSA, has decided to shut down the PGA China Tour section – how is that growing the game? It’s just making the game yet another pawn in a political game, duh
At least LIV is wiling to hire anyone from anywhere and take the game worldwide with its Tour, as is the Euro Tour.
People around the world are seeing how the US, as well the PGA Tour, is truly biased, prejudiced, and wants to shut its doors and its citizens’ eyes from the world, because the US government knows that if its citizens truly see how HUMAN BEINGS are living perfectly fine, safe, with low crime and happy, prospering in places like China, India and Saudi Arabia, etc the US has a real problem with its citizens getting AN EDUCATION and knowledge of OTHER possibilities. So who’s the oppressing regime now?

I think it’s a good move for LIV, Rick Shiel’s was one of the most popular golf YouTuber’s for the past several years. I’m guessing they threw a bunch of money at him and it’s just too good to pass up. I don’t hate Rick Shiel’s for doing the deal, nor do I hate the golfers who did – I just don’t respect it and can say with 100% conviction, it’s not something I’d ever do. They say everyone has a price, well for me (retired military) I can’t be bought by the Saudi’s.
I think LIV is a doomed product. It’s unwatchable for me and I’ve tried hard to like it. A lot of my favorite golfers went over there, and I still can’t watch it.
Back to Rick Shiel’s…will I stop watching his content? Well, what I’m really only interested in his equipment reviews and with his new LIV venture, I expect those will start to wane. No worries, there are plenty of others to fill in that space.

People don’t watch the NBA, because it’s the most boring and useless league and sport in the world. Look at the decline in ratings. It’s obvious. Now that’s not a PsyOps.
You’re also not looking at the global numbers for LIV. It’s got bigger and bigger every year.

      Jjgolf

Opman.. people Australia love liv but it’s not growing or Norman would be touting the numbers. Golf will never be watched like other pro sports. The reason why there is a 24 hour golf channel and major network tv coverage is because of the audience that is watching and that advertisers want to reach. Norman knew that which is why he made liv more casual.. thinking that was the secret sauce. It’s not.

There is only so many times I can watch him play mediocre golf and I have no interest in LIV. So, see ya. There is way too much golf content to move to. He is fizzling, that’s why he’s making this desperate move.

Agreed. I’ve been a fan of Rick since I found his channel in 2020, but over the last year or so my interest has really wavered. He seems likeable, but with the explosion of golf-focused YouTube channels, I find less and less reason to want to watch Rick. He’s a solid player compared to the general public, but I don’t really find it that interesting watching a professional chop it around trying to break 80.

I also agree with you about his equipment reviews. I haven’t watched those in a couple months because his reviews have always felt too subjective to me. Oh, this particular driver sounds more tinny than another? Better knock it for that. While things such as looks, sound and feel are certainly important elements to mention when reviewing equipment, they are very much “eye of the beholder” aspects. One person may refuse to buy a driver because of how it looks or feels, but another may not care as long as it performs for them.

Seems very much like a desperation move on both sides. LIV ratings have never been anything but abysmal and Rick seems to be moving towards a less prominent position in the world of golf YouTubers.

“His act has just worn stale over the past few years as newer, more exciting personalities have come along.”
It’s also because Rick’s equipment reviews are honest and straight and not biased or paid-for by the equipment manufacturers to give favorable reviews of hype, and some people don’t like that.

“The Tour is getting shelled early in 2025. Final-round viewership for The American Express last week was down 56 percent which is in line with some of the decreases we saw in Hawaii.”
      – I’ve made this point earlier in the other article about viewership – this problem is their own making – by having the coverage only on the Golf Channel. They need to put it back on network TV for free, at least on the weekends, so they they can get more John Q Public eyeballs on it, not just golf addict eyeballs. I scanned the weekends’ sports coverage on free TV – 4 of the 5 main local free TV channels in my area had college basketball on Saturday during the afternoon, and later in the afternoon you had the NFL playoffs, and same thing for Sunday with only NBC having English Premier League in the morning, with more college basketball on a couple more, and not much else anywhere else!!!! Lots of informercials though! The TV networks are doing a disservice to other Pro sports for doing that to themselves.
