The Testing Opportunity

In April, the MyGolfSpy Forum conducted its first OnCore Golf Ball Member Test, seeking 15 testers to try out the ELIXR, OnCore Vero X1 and the new OnCore Vero X2 balls. We selected five testers for each golf ball with various swing speeds, handicaps, ages, abilities, strengths (and weaknesses). The goal was to provide the best and most reliable reviews and information to potential buyers, helping them make well-informed decisions.

Each tester received three dozen of their chosen golf balls and had five weeks to extensively test them through on-course rounds, practice sessions and launch monitor evaluations.

Before delving into the review and insights of the OnCore ELIXR, let’s recap its features. The OnCore ELIXR is a three-piece urethane-covered golf ball targeted at golfers with swing speeds ranging from 90 to 100 mph. It is priced at $30 per dozen and boasts OnCore’s “enhanced perimeter weighting” for accuracy and control.

OnCore ELIXR Golf Ball Reviews

For the OnCore ELIXR, we selected five testers with handicaps ranging from 11.5 to 23, with varying swing speeds. Notably, one of our first female testers of the season participated in the ELIXR test.

Although unboxing golf balls might not be the most exciting experience, our testers still had some thoughts when they received their golf balls.

Tester Tijoli : “The packaging is simple and appealing and the sleeves have a sleek “O” logo that I love.   The balls have the OnCore logo using a red twist which will make it a little easier to identify when you’re in the rough but I do like the silver from the sleeve and think it would look sharp on a ball.”

Tester Placasse61: “Overall, my first impression of quality and looks are really good. Hopefully the promise of enhanced feel around the green, added distance with more accuracy off the tee is legit and they prove to be durable.“

OnCore ELIXR Golf Ball with golf clubs

On the course, the ELIXR testers had mixed opinions and results. Tester Lee Stanek wasn’t fully satisfied with the ELIXR, stating, “I found this ball to be about 5-10 yards shorter than my iron shots. Additionally, I struggled with some of my approach shots, as it didn’t feel as forgiving as I’m used to, leading to wider misses.”

Tester Connorn2  had similar results with reduced distance and accuracy compared to his usual ball.

My average drive distance with the Q Star DIVIDE with a nasty slice is about 200 yards and the slice usually puts me offline by about 20-30. I understand this is a swing problem. But with ELIXR I had drives barely cresting 150 yards on average for me, and some albeit rare were in the 130-yard range.”

As I mentioned though opinions and results were mixed and both Placasse and Tijoli had better results playing the OnCore ELIXR

Placasse61 said this about his approach shots while using the ELIXR:

“This is where I noticed the biggest difference for me. I think that I have stopped or backed it up on a green maybe 5 times in the past 2 plus years and have done it 5 times in the last 2 rounds. The ball checks up well with some roll out. The ball flight seems to be straighter with slight toe/heel hits and the overall distance with the high Irons is the same as my gamer.”

Tijoli added these comments:

“Off the Tee – The ELIXR has increased my distance and accuracy.  I am hitting the fairway or the first cut of rough more often which sets me up for a much better second shot.

Approach – The ELIXR flies lower and rolls farther because it hits the fairway and the green with less angle and therefore continues on its path with less resistance.  This has forced me to evaluate my club choice and ball placement and has improved my chance to get par because I’m getting the ball closer to the hole.”

OnCore ELIXR Golf Balls on the tee

As you can see this ball clearly worked for some and not as much for others.

Durability was another hot topic for testers the ELIXR seemed to do pretty well as was noted by Richk9holes

“A note on durability, I don’t often use my own balls indoors. The screen really destroys the cover on Supersoft. I was surprised by how well the Elixir performed in this regard. I took 100 full swings across the 3 balls, about half with Driver. The Elixir got the full round of ~50 swings including wedges. The Supersoft and Z Star only saw a driver, 6i for the most part. 2 swings each with each iron and PW, no shots with vokey or Jaws grooves. There’s noticeable wear on the Callaway and Srixion.”

The Final Verdict

While the OnCore Golf Balls worked for some, it didn’t for others. Some will continue to use this golf ball like our tester Tijoli who had this to say in her final write-up:

This ball was frustrating and I wanted to trade it in for what was comfortable. However, after using this ball repeatedly, I am thankful I was chosen for this test and I am thankful that I had to play it consistently so that I could see how well it works for me. I am a high handicap golfer with a low swing speed.  This ball works with my style and has given me greater distance by 20-30 yards (I still hope for more) and more accuracy than I’ve seen in my game before. The OnCore ELIXR has found a new home in my golf bag.  I never expected a golf ball to make such a difference in my game!

Others simply just didn’t find the performance, like Lee Stanek

“Overall, I was not that impressed with the feel, the consistency of iron shots, or the forgiveness. These are three areas that I now realize are important to me in choosing a ball. Overall using this ball during the rounds my general scoring was higher than typical. I wasn’t very pleased with how this ball performed compared to the ball(s) I typically use.“

When all the reviews were tallied, the OnCore ELIXR had a score ranging from 65 to 97 out of 100.

Not every golf ball is going to work for every golfer and this is why we have our testers go through objective and honest testing so our readers can have as much information as possible to make an informed decision on their next purchase.

I always love seeing golf ball reviews as it’s the 1 piece of equipment you use on every shot! You can’t play without a ball after all so the search for the perfect ball or at least the top few balls for me is fun!

Perhaps choose more consistent golfers when testing a 3-piece urethane golf ball. Reading their profiles and reviews, not sure this was the right skill set to get consistent results. That, in essence, is the summary of this testing. Very different results from the testers, which in the end tells me exactly nothing. The whole point of testing is that the collective results should be at least similar. There are some very stark contrasts here.

I have been using the Elixr 2022 exclusively this year. I tested this ball mostly because it was much less expensive than my previous choices. I have found it very similar to the Pro V1 ball and much better than the Bridgestone Tour B RX and Taylor Made Tour Response in terms of distance. Low spin off the tee and high spin on short irons is similar. I can’t attest to the perimeter weighting although it sounds good on paper. I can say these are far more of a fairway finder than the previously mentioned golf balls. I will keep using these golf balls despite the need to always try something new. I usually wait for their buy 2 get one free offer which bring these down to about $20/ dozen. A real bargain for a top tier functioning ball.

I’d like to see what part of the country the testers are. I mean you have to take into consideration the weather, the altitude etc… Great feedbacks though from the testers ! Keep up the good work MGS and engage your subscribers.

I’ve used the Elixr on and off since late last year. I find it a great “compromise” ball for the price. It’s a bit shorter hitting off the driver for me, but not as noticeably short as say the Kirkland 3pc. With the irons I get about the same performance as most premium urethane balls. Around the greens I find it is easy to control as long as I allow for a bit more rollout. I prefer to play it at the beginning or end of a season when it’s cold and I want a softer ball. Come warmer weather I don’t care for giving up the distance off the tee and I want a bit more spin into the faster greens…of course at my handicap I really shouldn’t worry about any of this.

Sorry, but I have a hard time forgiving Elixir for their role in the Gary and Wayne Player/Lee Elder controversy. When Wayne and Elixir stirred controversy, taking away from honoring Elder, I decided to stay away from Elixir. There are too many good choices these days.

I’ve used the Elixr off and on for a few years, interspersed with ProV1, Z Star, and TP5. I see very little difference (if any) between these. Distance, spin, and feel are all pretty much the same and I would actually give the Elixr a slight nod for durability. I’m a 7 handicap, driver distance 220-240 yds and play 3 to 4 times a week for reference.

But most importantly, the price is exceptional. So when you factor in value for performance, it’s really a no brainer playing this ball.

I love the ELIXR, the 84 and the 80 compression has added distance to this 16.7 index senior golfer (67) about ten yards easy! It checks up on the green, has great putting feel.

The phrase “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” couldn’t be truer than picking the golf balls each of us choose to use. This is just another example. I’ve tried all the OnCore balls. I have an anemic mid to high 70’s swing speed with my driver and depend on my short game to score. Overall, I liked the original Elixr more than the 2022 Elixr model. I also like the Vero X1 which I’m playing now. From all indications from their website, I should be playing with their lower compression Avanti 55 ball. Go figure. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I used the Elixr for a while, and if I recall it has a pretty low compression compared to other premium balls. If you have a fast clubhead speed then this ball is gonna spin hard which isn’t necessarily good. That was my main problem with the ball…off the tee I couldn’t control it like I can a Maxfli Tour or Srixon Z Star.
