TGL’s Opening Night Exceeded My Expectations. Here is How it Can Get Even Better

TGL finally arrived Tuesday night.

It was worth the wait.

The new tech-infused simulator league, which features 24 PGA Tour players across six teams, got off to a strong start and exceeded my expectations.

There was a long list of things TGL got right on opening night.

The breakneck pace of the action was startling and refreshing. The first hole between New York Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club took all of four minutes. The 40-second shot clock—which rarely got down under 10 seconds—pushed the players to move things along quickly.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but the pace was almost too fast at certain points. I said “almost.” The first 30-45 minutes of the broadcast were electric from a pacing perspective.

Because of that pace, banter between the players wasn’t as forced as we’ve seen in other made-for-TV matches. They seemed to be genuinely having fun without thinking much about it and the shot-after-shot rhythm eliminated a lot of the dreaded dead space.

The technology worked—functionally and entertainment-wise—as every full shot came with the allure of following the ball from a point of view we’re not used to seeing in traditional golf. The spinning green complex proved to be tricky as players were struggling to get up and down from awkward positions.

The format of triples—alternate shot between three guys—was perfect for the opening nine holes. Everyone was involved and engaged. It felt more like we were watching a guys’ bowling night instead of a Tour event.

Unexpectedly, some of the fans were booing bad shots and doing fake countdowns of the shot clock (like you would see in college basketball). While the crowd got stagnant later in the match, it was a bonus to get some involvement from them.

I also came away with high grades for the ESPN broadcast. There was some gravitas with Scott Van Pelt setting the stage early. ESPN would occasionally “flashback” to a hot-mic moment between the players, a great way to capture their interactions without being forced. The first commercial did not come until 34 minutes into the proceedings so we all got into a groove as viewers—a distinct change from the typical feeling of watching a golf tournament.

There are improvements to be made with the broadcast but I came away impressed by the look and feel of everything. It felt rehearsed—in a good way.

Overall, I would give TGL a B+ for opening night. I will be watching next week.

It is the dead of winter here in my hometown of Nashville (seven inches of snow coming!) and most of the country isn’t playing golf. This is a harmless, creative idea that has people watching golf on ESPN.

Viewership was very encouraging—an average of more than 1.2 million tuned in, which was higher than expected. That is more than double any LIV broadcast the past three years.

Consider that a big win for golf so far.

I don’t want to hear anything from the crowd who is saying that people can’t criticize LIV and then support TGL. That is nonsense. LIV is basically the same exact thing as the Tour—it looks and feels roughly the same—while TGL is a completely different product that reimagines golf in a creative way.

Whether TGL becomes the next big thing or eventually falls flat, this concept has little relationship to LIV.

Honestly, LIV could have done way more damage as a simulator league or venturing into the alternate golf category.

Areas TGL can get better

With any endeavor like this, lessons will be learned and adjustments will be made.

In no particular order, here are five ways TGL can improve for the second week.

1. Cut down player introductions/interviews

The debut TGL broadcast came on air right at 9 p.m. ET as Duke mercifully finished off a rout of Pitt in men’s college basketball (the timing was a question given how basketball games tend to run long).

But the first 15 minutes of the broadcast were too “fluffy” as my high-school English teacher would say. A couple of boring player interviews were followed by player introductions that came off a little gratuitous.

We can cut out some of that. The way I imagine it, the broadcast could start with the players already out in the arena. Maybe SVP hits them with a couple of questions and then the golf starts. We don’t need any more than five minutes from the start of the broadcast and the actual golf.

There were also a couple of random interviews that were unnecessary. For the love of God, can we please keep DJ Khaled off the broadcast? Nobody is asking for this.

2. Show shot data after every full swing

I think this one is an absolute no-brainer.

We’re in a tech-infused simulator league so let’s show off all the tech.

We got to see shot analytics a handful of times throughout the night but why not throw it up on the screen after every full swing? Junkies want to see the carry yardage, ball speed and all the other metrics.

There was a cool moment in the match where Ludvig Aberg crushed a driver and his teammates were guessing what his ball speed was going to be. That is where this league can really shine. This should feel like a bachelor party activity where the best players in the world are messing around and talking golf.

The shot data is something that draws viewers into the moment. How far did that go? How does Rickie Fowler’s spin rate with a driver compare to mine? It’s almost addictive to watch it pop up on the screen.

Ludvig Aberg was the man of the match on night one of TGL. (GETTY IMAGES/Mike Ehrmann)

3. Let the player audio carry more of the action

A couple of things here.

The player audio was a little difficult to hear in certain spots because of the music blaring (a wider variation of music would also be appreciated). It worked well without background noise but you couldn’t hear the banter much beyond that.

And then ESPN had Matt Barrie—totally fine but not particularly memorable—trying to narrate the action and interject with questions for players. Barrie was having to carry a little too much at points, forcing in conversation in some of the dead space.

I think they could dial Barrie back and let the player interaction speak louder. Just have Barrie explain what is happening from a golf perspective and then let the players talk to each other.

I was concerned the players would be too awkward—and that could still be a problem—but the fast pace makes it easier on these guys. Some of the pressure is alleviated when you are hitting a lot of golf shots. The production could lean more on the players because of this.

Along this same line of thinking, ESPN could hit those “hot mic flashback” moments way more. One they had on Tuesday night was Shane Lowry saying he wants to be the Scottie Scheffler of indoor golf. That is good stuff!

The more this is led by the players having a good time, the better the product will be.

4. Modify the intermission so the pace doesn’t bog down

A little over an hour into the broadcast, we got a 12-minute intermission prior to the singles format for the final six holes.

That sucked the energy out of the broadcast. We had a blowout match and the singles didn’t hit because only two of the six players were competing on each hole.

It’s a wait-and-see approach for the singles. Would that be more entertaining in a closer match? I’m not sure yet.

As for the intermission and the 15-hole match lingering to reach the two-hour mark … it was too much. I’m guessing the TV slots can’t be changed now but this would work better as a 90-minute show than two hours.

I didn’t mind the few commercials we got because the pace of action was so fast—but stopping for 12 minutes in the middle of the round probably got a few people to change the channel.

Maybe skip the intermission but have a quick SVP player interview to reset everything going into the last six holes?

5. The course needs to get a little whackier/firmer

While some of the TGL hole designs are cool—this hole called “Pick Yer’ Plunder” is the perfect example—I came away disappointed in how they played.

It didn’t seem like the players had a hard time with decision making. These are the best golfers in the world and TGL can make any design it wants. There should be ridiculous holes that are more Mario Golf than what we see on the Tour.

If the designs are going to be more conservative, the turf firmness dial should be turned way up so we see balls bouncing.

Make these guys really think out there!

Despite some of these grievances, I’m encouraged by what I saw from Night One of TGL. I’m assuming it will only get better from a production standpoint.

With Tiger Woods playing the next two weeks, I’ll definitely be watching.

What did you think of TGL’s first night? Will you be watching again?

Let me know below in the comments.

I loved TGL! I was skeptical when I tuned in, but it was fast, fun, and had good banter between the players. Comments for consideration: 1) Keep the “Chicago Bulls” like introduction. Each team needs a theme song – fight song; 2) Get rid of the Olympic style player profiles; 3) Get rid of DJ Khaled; 4) Show lots of shot data; even compare the players as they compete with one another (e.g. Tiger’s drive stats v. Rory’s drive stats); 5) Turn up the player audio between shots and turn down the background music; 6) Shorten or get rid of the intermission; 7) Feature some historic golf holes and provide a brief history on its significance; 8) Provide a couple creative Grand Canyon/Mario type holes per round, but not too many — this is competitive golf and we want the players and the golf game to be taken seriously.

Also, this is a bit off the wall, but maybe you have cheerleaders who are good at golf on the sidelines. First, they get the crowd going. Second, one or two of the cheerleaders gets interviewed and provides commentary between shots (maybe this replaces the intermission). Third, as an added twist the players have the option of the “cheerleader challenge”: Our cheerleader could hit that shot better than you. If she does hit a better shot your team gets an extra two points for that hole. Or something like that.

Very interesting play. Holes not the standard holes you’d see. Great risk, reward opportunities. More like what I’d expect when AI is mixed with LSD. LOL
Liked the hole preview prior to play.
Need better announcers. Maybe Gary McCord & Peter Jacobsen.
We’ll see next week. Nothing else going on.

A good concept. The initial start had some flaws, but that was expected. For me, the “disco ball” lighting and blasting music was over the top. It was like the LIV tour on steroids. Too cheesy for my taste. Tone the glitz down a bit and focus more on the actual shots.

Course and conditions are way too easy for these guys. Set it up so they have to hit difficult shots every time. I want to see them execute (or not) creative shots. That, to me, is what separates them from the rest of the golfing world. And get rid of DJ Khaled. His rambling on golf is cringeworthy.

I had the opportunity to attend one of several rehearsals, during which three professionals representing the New York Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club were present. The multimillion-dollar SoFi venue is amazing and the technology is beyond reproach, with a rotating green where the undulations can be changed, green-side bunkers, and tee boxes with real grass. and a screen that is 24 times larger than a home simulator. I heard the playing area was as long as a football field. There is adequate parking and I suspect there will be a fee now that the competition has begun. Play will continue until the finals at the end of March. Seats are not inexpensive and can run as high as just below $1K, depending upon the location. Looks like all the seats are sold out at the moment. I had two questions: 1. Are the simulator holes taken from existing courses? 2. What will the SoFi stadium used for after the March finals?

I wish I had the system in my house, but other than that, I didn’t get the appeal.
The whole switch from the screen to the role-poly chipping green and actual green is dumb. It’s such a time-waster, moving around like that – perfect for commercial breaks as they do make those moves, and obviously that suits them, but I will switch off every time they cut.
No trees, no leaves, no obstructions, no real slope changes, no water! They could have had the swing platform to be able to deform into way more cooked shapes for each terrain changes that that!
How about WIND???? they could have had a wind machine in there blowing in their face, blowing across the green?????
Such a stupid concept. But I applaud them for spending zillions to build this half-azzed thing. It’s well constructed.
I won’t be watching any more episodes, no matter who is playing, unless they get change the concept and bring in the Creators/Influencers, Female teams, cheerleaders, and Joe Schmos like us to be able to compete against the top pros but letting us use our official handicap indexes. I am sure there will be festive events like that in the future, but the way it is – who the heck is going to take this seriously?????
      Waste of time and money.

I didn’t watch it live, the one time I changed the channel to watch it, it was in intermission, I was like no. I watched it the next morning on Hulu, then I could fast forward through a bunch of the waste of time nonsense. I agree that people want to see the numbers on the full shots, they showed some and not others, made no sense. I want to hear more of the strategy of the players, not the announcer.

Maybe they need to add in a wind element, I am fine with a 40 second shot clock but this could easily be done in 1-1.5 hours even with commercials.

The “HAMMER” is just a press on the hole, use regular golf scoring and allow teams to press at any time, not just when a team has the hammer.

I will say this is the ultimate simulator setup, what a fun place to play, I love the actual grass and bunker sand, the problem would be that if most nnon pros were playing, that grass that is the rough would probably be chewed up quickly!

Overall, it was okay. The facility was awesome, and anyone who has ever practiced indoors during the winter has to want to try it out. What a cool setup, they definitely fixed the unrealistic putting you get with regular simulators. From a viewer’s perspective, I found it difficult to get a feel for the putts the players were facing. Maybe it was the solid fake grass color or the lighting, but we didn’t get to witness the nuances of the technology beneath the surface.

The players were a fun bunch. The best moment for me was the look on Ludvig Aberg’s face when Shane Lowery complimented his shot with a heavily Irish-laden F-word; at least it sounded like one to me and Aberg may have confirmed it.

The biggest downside for me was the announcers. It was reminiscent of Jason Bateman’s coverage of dodgeball on the Ocho in the movie Dodgeball. It needed more golf knowledge and a more vibrant personality; even with Tiger and Rory in the seat next to them, it lacked. Once the match was out of hand, the whole thing became a little monotonous and needed some help from the announcer. The hammer should remain with the team that is behind so they can press the press. It would also be nice to hear the players talk about club selection when it is other than a driver.

The course should be made tougher…i.e., the 729 yd par 5. They just hit driver across to a landing area and hit irons in to the green. Make them go the long route as we all know they can hit 300+ yd drives, I want them to have to maneuver around the obstacles and hazards. Too long an intermission, and although I ALWAYS watch SVP sports center telecasts, he really is a bad commentator when it comes to golf! Get Mike Tirico or another golf person. Tone down the music…PLEASE…want to hear the golfers with their banter.

Not totally sold on it, to be honest. I thought that it was pretty amazing to see the setup they have created, that part was pretty mind-blowing and so incredibly impressive. But that only lasts for so long and once the initial awe wears off, we were left with just a few guys hitting golf shots with seemingly no real stakes. The team thing is fine but I just didn’t truly buy into it. I think that if it is on TV I may check it out for a few shots or during commercials of something else I am watching, but that is probably the extent of it. And again, once the initial amazement of the setup they created fades, which again is stunning and absolutely brilliant, I think that people won’t care and probably won’t tune in. And that is where I am at.

The tee shots seemed to go a similar distance whatever club was used. Hard to follow or get involved. Commentary was loud and banal. The only good thing was the clever technology. But what a waste. Big mistake for Rory to get involved with Woods in this. Woods saying their dream has taken golf into another stratosphere is pure nonsense. It would be really interesting if the tee box, fairway and rough hitting areas were also on hydraulics. Tee box would always be level but hitting on a fairway slope or out of the rough on a slope (any direction) would definitely make those shots more realistic. I understand the tee box/fairway/rough squares were real grass with real dirt underneath but it’s just sod that can be made to move with slope.

I found the event extremely entertaining and an incredible new avenue for golf. Infinitely more engaging than the match in Vegas LIV vs PGA. It was apparent the players were engaged and competitive. The hole designs were great. It was a shame the first match wasn’t close. Personally I can’t wait for next Tuesday as it’s an ideal format for Tiger to show his shotmaking abilities without having to put too much strain on his legs. As an avid viewer of competitive golf could not be happier we can watch players of this caliber on Tuesday nights in the winter months.

What was their strategy about where to aim, when to use the hammer, and how they set-up their rotation of players. Way too much talking by the “host”. His continuing hype of the contest during the game was redundant. We have six pros up close and personal and we want to hear their thoughts, comments, and trash talking; not the inane comments of some ESPN goof off.

I really enjoyed the first night of TGL. My complaints are small in nature, but I think a few things could be improved: 1) the graphics showing which stroke they’re hitting could be bigger, as I felt it difficult to discern what shot they were hitting at times; 2) similarly, unless I somehow missed it, they didn’t explain the penalty strokes when in tall grass? I was expecting someone putting for birdie but it was for par with no explanation; 3) they kept talking about how the green spins and can contour to match the virtual hole however they only showed the green spinning a couple times, but not re-contouring for the new hole (only a couple clips of the metal plates underneath before there was a green) which I think was big opportunity wasted; and 4) I actually think that it was moving too fast at times, maybe the shot clock could be longer when around the green (say 60 seconds). Still a really enjoyable watch and I hope they fine-tune it in the coming weeks.

If you thought this was a good start you must be starved for golf. But you make valid points, I also thought the announcer was terrible, this is not wrestling. The player interaction was lacking, or could not be heard, the preview of the hole sucked, not enough time and should have the players strategy. The holes looked stupid with “empty” grandstands, no need for them at all and several holes they could act as backstops for bad shots. I think the triples just dragged the competition down, with no flow or drama. I give it a D and rather boring, and I have watched on the range at the majors.

I really enjoyed it as well. Please stop with the celebrity stuff. Its great they are privileged enough to play in that arena but I don’t care about dj whoever. Loved the fast pace. More banter between the guys would be good. The hammer is dumb. Just let those guys press when they are down like real golfers do. Overall I am looking forward to watching each week. Perfect timing as I am playing simulator golf here in Montana. I agree with you, keep the stats on the screen, heck I would love to see the spin numbers on half wedges and shots out of the bunkers too. Great debut that is for sure.

I enjoyed it but there are definitely a few things that need to get better.
      1. Need a better way to see the ball in the stadium, could not really see it.
      2. They did not show things that are effecting the shot like wind.
      3. Would be cool to see the tee boxes move so they are no always on a flat surface.
      4. It also seemed like the players were just hitting normal straight shots. Or with the sim angle everything looked mostly straight. Would be cool for the courses to have things to force crazy draws or stingers.
