The Testing Opportunity 

Sub 70 has a pretty long history in participating in Forum Member testing, including previous member tests of iron sets, drivers, fairways and hybrids. But we’ve never had Sub 70 wedges for member testing. Until now.

It is no secret there is a definite Sub 70 following on the forum so there was some excitement when this testing opportunity was announced.

The selected testers received two Sub 70 TAIII wedges. They could choose from three different finishes (Tour Satin, TourRaw and Tour Black QPQ) as well as two-degree loft increments from 50  to 60 degrees with the 54- through 60-degree models also available in a low-bounce option. 

According to Sub 70, the TAIII was: “created with both reliability and versatility in mind, the TAIII golf wedge can play every shot: high, low, high spin or low spin. Meant for those with creativity around the greens, the Tommy Armour III Tour Milled wedges are the precision-made tools of a short game artist.”

Sub 70 TAIII Wedge Review

The forum staff selected four testers from more than 3,600 applicants and received their desired wedge specs. Shortly thereafter, their wedges arrived and the testing began.

The handicaps of our testers ranged from 7 to 15 with some listing “wedge play” as their biggest strength while the others had it as their biggest weakness. 

What the Testers Said

Unboxing and taking the wrapper off new clubs is exciting, fun and, at least for me, a thrill equal to Christmas when I was a kid. 

Our testers for the Sub 70 TAIII wedges felt similarly when they received their wedges. From the personal notes included in the boxes to some finer details, it all added to the overall experience.

Tester CB Lobo 4 LIfe: “I think this is the most beautiful golf club I have certainly ever played but also ever seen. Sub 70 has knocked it out of the park with this one.” 

Others like DonnieGolfs were also very impressed: “I received my 52- and 58-degree Sub 70 wedges, and they are as good or better looking than any top brand wedges on the market.”

Tester ZMendle10 could hardly wait to get his box opened and found a few nice surprises:  “It was then time to open the box and see what waits inside and boy was I excited. Upon opening I discovered a spec sheet, shaft stickers, a Sub 70 sticker, Jason Hiland’s business card, a $200 offer for a short game academy, and a handwritten note. I’m not sure who the note was written by but I would imagine it was either Jason Hiland or the builder themselves. It was a very nice touch and wasn’t unappreciated.”

The Sub 70 TAIII Wedges On The Course

With the wedges unboxed, plastic taken off and for some testers’ grips installed (a few requested wedges without grips), it was time to get to the course and see how they played. 

We love seeing reviews with lots of data and stats to back up findings and our testers were able to provide this in abundance with tester MaxEntropy comparing the Sub 70s to his Cleveland wedges and tester ZMendle10 putting the Sub 70 TAIII wedges against his Vokeys. 

On the course, the new wedges were proving their worth to ZMendle10.

“On the course these wedges have been nothing but good to me. I have not had anywhere near as much confidence in my short game since putting these in the bag. Around the green I feel I can control these wedges to roll out and land exactly where I need them to.

I’m not sure if this is because of the fresh grooves or if it’s the sole design but they are working for me so far. Around the green has been my biggest weakness and I have been consistently getting up and down more often to where it’s noticeable for me.“

For tester CB Lobo 4 Life, it was the practice that translated to on-course play that impressed him. 

“What I love about playing these wedges on the course was that when I practiced with them the confidence carried over wonderfully. Additionally, Sub 70 boasts the ability to play a plethora of different shots, and I can confirm that this is definitely the case.

Need to hit a high shot over some hazards? Check. Knockdown wedge shot with a high spin to slop and zip back? Check. Short check-up chip from the fringe to get within the gimme range? Check. All these things I have accomplished with these wedges.“ 

In his comparison, tester MaxEntropy noticed the following:

“The main observations I take away from this table are: 1) the Sub 70’s generally have higher spin (perhaps not as much more as I was expecting) and 2) I tended to hit the Clevelands a little more solidly.”

Sub 70 TAIII Sound and Feel

While the looks were great and on-course performance seemed to be there, our testers did have feedback on the sound and feel of these wedges. 

Zmendle10 described the feel of the wedges as such:

“I’m not sure if it’s the milling, forging , or the combo of both but they are amazing out the middle. However, when not out of the middle these wedges let you know to start shaping up. It’s not bad like a thinned iron early in the morning but it’s jarring for sure. You know where you missed it and you know to do better moving forward. But, that doesn’t mean the performance has been affected.”

MaxEntropy found very similar results with his wedges.

“In terms of the sound and feel, the Sub 70s are very satisfying with good contact – a solid, but muted, “click” and you can barely feel the ball, which I love. Off-center contact results in a bit more obnoxious “clang” that feels about as bad as it sounds.“

The Final Verdict

When testing was all wrapped up, the Sub 70 TAIII wedges received a low score of 82/100 and high score of 92/100. 

All in all, a very solid outing from a wedge that costs $135 and is available with a variety of options. Testers really enjoyed the looks, performance and feel on good strikes with the TAIII wedges. While the feel on miss-hits left something to be desired, they didn’t see much performance loss. The final improvement testers suggested more grind options. 

Three of the four testers will be gaming these wedges moving forward. However, for MaxEntropy it wasn’t a landslide victory over his previous set. 

“I am very happy with the TAIII wedges and really like the product. They may not have earned an exclusive place in my bag just yet, but I will be keeping them and will continue to do some periodic side-by-side comparisons.”

While ZMendle10 will look to play them even though he does miss the versatility with his Vokey 60.

“For now I’m gonna play these wedges for the rest of the season. I’m really playing well around the greens with them and I’m gonna ride that wave for as long as I can.”

Tester CB Lobo 4 Life did have some concerns about the durability. However, it isn’t stopping him from gaming these moving forward. 

“This is a play-it club for me because it has been an absolute joy to be able to play these clubs. Between the performance of the clubs and the shot-making you can do with them, they are definitely worth getting-I certainly loved these clubs so much that I did go ahead and purchase a 50-degree to complete the set”
