Best Golf Irons For Beginners 2024 (Tested and Reviewed)

When we do our golf iron testing, we break it into four categories. The categories are player’s irons, player’s distance irons, game-improvement irons, and super game-improvement irons. For beginner golfers, there are plenty of great choices in the game-improvement and super game-improvement categories. If you are new to golf and want to invest in clubs built with your skill level in mind, these are the irons to try.

Best golf irons for beginners (Quick picks)

We’ve highlighted some of the best options below but if you need a quick answer as to which of the best golf irons for beginners you should try, here are a few:

Tommy Armour 845+ (Best overall super game-improvement)

Tommy Armour 845+ iron

Who Is It For?

✅ Golfers who want more forgiveness: The Tommy Armour 845+ is the best super game-improvement iron for forgiveness thanks to its consistent ball speed and dispersion.

Players who also want accuracy. The Tommy Armour 845+ earned second place for accuracy.

Who Is It Not For?

You prioritize distance: Although it has a strong performance in accuracy and forgiveness, the Tommy Armour 845+ is not the best for distance.

Why Buy

We love to see a golf iron perform well and still be offered at a budget-friendly price point. The Tommy Armour 845+ is a club that most testers said they would have never considered yet it was a top performer in forgiveness and accuracy.

If you’re a beginner looking to shoot lower scores, forgiveness and accuracy are the categories where you’ll want to focus your purchasing decisions. The only real knock against the Tommy Armour 845+ is its distance capability—it finished in the bottom half of the testing results.

The Tommy Armour 845+ irons surprised the testers who commented that they were a good-looking club. For $399, the Tommy Armour 845+ should be on your list of clubs to test.

Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal HL (Runner-Up super game-improvement)

Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal HL Irons Review

Who Is It For?

Players who need accuracy. We measure accuracy using Strokes Gained and the Mizuno JPX 923 is one of the best irons for accuracy.

Anyone looking for reliability. Second overall for forgiveness, the Mizuno JPX 923 HL is a reliable golf iron.

Who Is It Not For?

Golfers who need more distance: The only category where the Mizuno JPX 923 HL struggled was distance, placing 10th overall.

Why Buy

There are a few things that stand out about the Mizuno JPX 923 HL but the most obvious is that it doesn’t look like a traditional super game-improvement iron built for beginners. Testers loved the look of the JPX 923 HL but they were also happy with its accuracy and forgiveness.

The JPX 923 HL struggled with distance. It is a higher-lofted iron set designed to help players gain height and extra control on their shots. Because of this, you’ll give up a few yards.

The JPX 923 HL has been one of our top performers in the super game-improvement category for the last few years and it almost won again in 2024. It’s a great golf iron for beginners.

Score: 8.9

Tour Edge Exotics E723 (Best game-improvement)

Tour Edge Exotics E723 game improvement iron

Who Is It For?

Golfers who want consistency. The Tour Edge Exotics E723 is the best game-improvement iron for forgiveness in 2024.

Anyone looking for more accuracy. The E723 offers playable accuracy and would likely get even better with a proper fitting for the right shaft.

Who Is It Not For?

Anyone looking for extra distance: Although the E723 offers solid distance potential, it can’t compete with the best game-improvement irons for distance.

Why Buy

The Tour Edge Exotics E723 is the best game-improvement iron of 2024. It’s forgiving, consistent, accurate and budget-friendly, all of the most important features a beginner should look for in an iron set.

When we test golf irons, we focus on performance over subjective appeal but we do collect information from testers about feel, look, sound, etc. The E723 does not perform well in subjective feedback scores.

It isn’t the most aesthetically appealing game-improvement iron but when it comes to performance, no other iron could beat it. As a beginner, when choosing the best golf irons for your needs, you’ll have to decide at some point if subjective appeal or performance matters more.

Titleist T-350

Titleist T-350 iron review

Who Is It For?

Players who want accuracy. The T-350 is the second-best game-improvement iron for accuracy in 2024.

Golfers looking for forgiveness. Reliability and consistency go hand in hand and the Titleist T-350 does a decent job with both.

Who Is It Not For?

Golfers looking for extra distance: The T-350 is average regarding distance performance. It’s difficult to find extra yards in an iron that also offers forgiveness and accuracy.

Why Buy

In the game-improvement category, golfers are looking for ease of use. The T-350 is a reliable and easy-to-use game-improvement iron. One tester said, “Great feeling and one of the easier game-improvement irons to hit.”

The Titleist T-350 has a good mix of accuracy and forgiveness. However, it struggles a bit with distance, finishing eighth overall.

Score: 9.2

I’m being a broken record here but the reason why none of them ranked in the top end for distance is because none of them are “loft jacked”. They are all 2-3 degrees weaker than most of the longer irons in their categories. Example the Ping G730 7 iron is 28 degrees. All but the Tour Edge are 30 or 31 degrees.

Vito, I have noticed this too. The testing criteria seems to reward the higher lofted irons as more accurate and forgiving, which Physics would certainly give an advantage to, and when they all get listed in one article, and each of the winning irons has their biggest “con” is “not the best for distance” it is obvious. Not as strong of a loft… more forgiving and shorter distance but more accurate. No surprise with that.

I’m increasingly intrigued by the 845+.

Maybe I should treat myself over the holidays.
