What is a Sunday bag, you ask?
In simplest terms, a Sunday bag is a pared-down carry bag meant to hold a few essentials and a handful of clubs for a loop around the links, a short course or a quick trip to the range.
However, as golf equipment continues to advance, so to do the Sunday bag’s monikers and ever-evolving forms. Whether called a pencil, weekender, carry or Sunday bag, they’re all marketed for a similar purpose. That is, to allow you to take a few clubs, balls and other essentials to the course or range with minimal footprint and heft. However, this is where the similarities end as the designs and looks of the various Sunday bags are in no way united.
The history of the Sunday bag dates back to the game’s roots in Scotland and the religious decree to “keep the Sabbath holy” meaning “thou shalt not do any work” on Sundays. The limiting factor with these bags is that they aren’t designed to carry much more than a few clubs.

First and foremost, a Sunday bag should be comfortable and functional while walking. We refer to this as “walkability.” (Don’t look for that one in the dictionary. It’s not there.)

Vessel’s ‘Sunday’ bags have been one of the biggest disappointments from the brand in recent years. When they announced they were doing a ‘Sunday’ line, I was psyched to see something compact but with the build quality they are known for. Then we got what amounts to just another stand bag with smaller pockets…
If I have to use two hands to manage it, it’s not a Sunday bag. If it weighs event remotely close to my lightweight walking bag, it’s not a Sunday bag. If it can hold a pair of shoes, it’s probably not a Sunday bag…

If a Sunday Bag has dual shoulder straps…it’s NOT a Sunday Bag. Good grief. I had a Sunday Bag years ago, and it could essentially do what the Wicked Witch of the West did when she was splashed with water. It was collapsible, in a sense, maybe 2 pounds, probably not even. These things are the antithesis of a Sunday Bag, IMO. They’re carry bags. I want my old Sun Mountain TRUE Sunday Bag, one that could’ve been crammed to fit inside a bowling bag. And NFW am I spending that kind of money on an occasional bag for trips to the range. I think my Sun Mountain SB was < $100.

What Ping Moonlite bag did you test? I bought mine last year and it has a 4-way divider and 2 shoulder straps. It also doesn’t need “stand/legs” because Ping waterproofed the bottom and came up with an ingenious trick to make the main shoulder strap stand up when the bag is laying on the ground.
The Moonlite is my 3rd Sunday bag (fwiw: I use one 50+ rounds a year). It is by far the best. The quality is typical Ping level (especially when compared to my Titleist drop bag). fwiw: I bought the Vessel but sent it back because it isn’t a Sunday bag.
I only carry 9 or so clubs (it is a Sunday bad after all) but with standard sized grips you could put 14 in it. So the club to weight ratio is pretty impressive. And it comes in a variety of colour schemes.
Also, here in Canada it regularly goes on sale so I paid $80 for mine.

If Sun Mountain decides to rebadge their C-130 to “Sunday Special,” are you going to include it in next year’s survey of “Sunday” bags? Because most of these aren’t. Also, dinging a bag with limited storage is silly because the whole point of a Sunday bag is to *carry less stuff*.

During the off-season (November 1-March 31) I carry just 7 clubs. Had the original Sun Mountain Swift (two-way divider) but now mostly use a Sunday El Camino. Love the quality and strap system of the Sun Mountain bags, and the extra room and features of the El Camino. Can’t go wrong woth either!
