(4) TESTERS WANTED: Cleveland Launcher HB & CBX Irons

Tell the truth: it’s good to have Cleveland back as a full-line golf equipment company, isn’t it?

After a brief hiatus as a short-game only brand, Cleveland rejoined the irons & woods world last fall with GI/SGI equipment aimed at the big ol’ meaty part of the golfing public. And they used an iconic Cleveland name to do it.

Call it the Launcher relaunch.

Cleveland CBX Irons - 16-0826

TESTERS WANTED:

Cleveland says if you want distance, feel and control – the Launcher CBX irons might be what you’re looking for. And if you’re a higher handicapper looking for maximum forgiveness, the hollow-bodied Launcher HB’s should be on your must-demo list.

Last December Cleveland hosted a couple of MyGolfSpy Community Forum members at their Huntington Beach, CA facility for a full-bag fitting, featuring the new Launcher CBX and HB irons. Our guys found both irons to be plenty long and plenty easy to hit and came home totally impressed.

That’s what they said; now we want to know what you say.

Cleveland HB Irons - 1-0839

We’re looking for four golfers: two of you to test, review and keep a set of Cleveland Launcher CBX irons, and two more to do the same with the Launcher HB irons.

This one is going to be fun!

This review opportunity is open to any avid and motivated golfer from the U.S. or Canada.

How To Apply:

As you know, MyGolfSpy takes its product testing very seriously. All of our member reviews are published in our Community Forum (click here to check them out). We expect a lot from our reviewers – writing a thorough, detailed and honest review is a two-month commitment, requiring extensive on-course evaluation as well as participation in the Forum itself to answer questions and discuss product performance with other golfers.

That means to be a potential reviewer you must be a registered member of the MyGolfSpy Community Forum, where you’ll find thousands of like-minded golfers from all over the world anxious to talk about golf equipment.

To apply to test, review and keep a set of Cleveland Launcher HB or CBX irons, here’s what you have to do:

– First, sign up for the MyGolfSpy Forum (click here to register).

– Second, apply ONLY in the Official Cleveland Launcher CBX/HB Irons Review Application Thread in the MyGolfSpy Forum (click here).

Cleveland CBX Irons - 6-0793

We’ll be announcing the selected testers in the MyGolfSpy Forum next week, so be sure to check back there to see if you’ve been chosen.

Good luck!

I have been interested in club texting for some time but it always seemed to be like winning a lottery. I have been a part of a few other forums but this would be a great opportunity for me to check out the new Cleveland CBX irons. I have been playing game improvement/oversize irons for the past twenty plus years and have been a big Taylormade/Adams fan. While I still have my Adams/Taylormade irons I have recently tried out the Cobra brand – Baffler XL irons, and the Bio Cell irons with decent results playing the Bio Cell irons. So I have been able to open my eyes to see that I can play any top name brand iron in the game improvement market! I would love to be a tester and would love to be able to see both sides of the coin – with a neutral position as I objectively play and see how these Cleveland irons prove themselves as forgiving and yet are very workable. I still remember the VAS irons and realized then that Cleveland Golf was on the cutting edge with their irons. I just never had a chance to try out their models. All the best to the team at MyGolfSpy and I want to wish those who are selected with this prestigious honor to take up the challenge and not take this opportunity too lightly. Glad to be a part of this group and I still refer to reviews of past irons such as my Bio Cell and my Adams A7 irons (yes they have stood the test of time going on ten years and three times I came back to these irons. With a birthday coming up…putting me in pre-senior form – this would be an ideal time to celebrate that birthday with being a part of the club testing team!

I have recently purchased the Cleveland CBX irons and really like them. I am a 21 HCP and it is going higher with all the rain and high rough in Western PA. I do think the CBX irons launch the ball higher than my previous irons—Cobra Baffler and I like the appearance of the clubs. They don’t look like mallets like the old Cleveland Luanchers did.

My first set of clubs were Cleveland VAS irons. Second was VAS+, graphite. Then TA2. Then I had a choice to make. Nike & Cleveland both had a Combo set. 588 MB/CB Combo VS Nike VRPro Combo. I got lucky & got the Nike set with upgraded PX graphite shafts for cheaper than the Cleveland stock. Years later I added the 588 Altitude 6 – 3 instead of the Nike long irons(replaces 5 – 2 iron, same lofts!) Still playing them. I expect these new CBX irons are great! Hoping I get a chance to try them.

I would be happy to test out the CBX irons. I am a retired 7 handicap player, play 3 times a week. Currently use Mizuno JPX800 irons. I would like 5 – D (gap) set, regular flex. Current set is wearing out, so I am ready for a new set. Thanks.

In one post on the MyGolfSpy blog, a member asked why it was so difficult to apply for one of the many contests you run for club and equipment testers. The MGS (MyGolfSpy) response was that if you are a member of the blog then you are in the contest. However, this disregards the plain rules of each contest which require the bloggers to identify their equipment and reasons why they should be selected.

So, with that in mind I would like to be considered for the Cleveland Launcher Clubs contest. While I carry a 19 handicap, some of those high scores can be blamed on such things as very inclement weather (two weeks ago it was blowing 60 mph and it was difficult to stand up yet alone hit the ball on the tee as if the ball would even stay on a tee or the rain storm a week before that which required all carts to be on the path and I actually had to walk a lot of the course which was difficult as I am disabled with a serious back injury inflicted during my military service 50 years ago. Or perhaps it is the basic lack of great skill although I practice five days a week and play two 9’s weekly one of which is in the Senior Men’s League where pin placements are always in the toughest part of the green. So far this year I have shot two 45s for nine and two 62s with most rounds in the low 50s.

I am from Michigan, land of many beautiful golf courses. I generally play on a home town public course that is as nice as many private ones albeit no valet service or free shoe shining. My golf bag is a mixture of clubs with a Callaway Series V Driver as well as the matching three and five woods. My irons are Adam’s Ideas (6-9, GW, and PW). Other wedges include a PowerBuilt 54 degree and Callaway 60 degree MacDaddy and a 64 degree Sure Out. I also carry Adams hybrids in 4-6 (they came with the set) and use a TaylorMade Spider putter (my secret weapon).

My major weakness is my inability to hit a long drive (165-180 yards is around max although 200 on occasion) or a long fairway wood (consistent 165 yards from the Series V 5 wood). Perhaps this is because I am a disabled veteran with, inter alia, a fused lumbar spine. Skill is seen in short approach shots and putting.

I spend on average 6 hours a week practicing at the range and around the wedge-play practice green. I play at least two 9s a week. I can be strongly opinionated once the fact have been revealed. I suppose I learned this in my attending law school.

I am a bit more interested in the Cleveland CBX irons as the HB irons seem to me to carry those problems inherent with hybrids such as difficulties experienced in extracting from the rough. Of course, I do have considerable experience with Adams hybrids and could certainly offer a better opinion of them than the CBX irons as I have no history with the low irons but the more I play the more i realize that irons well played are superior in most instances over hybrids. Of course, the HB irons could be the secret difference. Indeed, Cleveland may well be onto something by presenting an entire shelf of hybrid irons. I am open minded on this point.

Lastly, you can consider me a professional writer of legal briefs having spent four decades as a federal trial and appeals attorney. Lawyers are trained to cut to the chase and to recognize the nuances of evidence. I believe this mastery of examination can be applied to the balancing of the pros and cons of golf clubs. Now that I am retired and a year past 70, my main recreational time is spent on golf for the most part. Thus, if selected, you will receive a full two months of testing as desired as well as an unbiased opinion.

      Sincerely,

      DickA

At 74 I need some increased help to achieve added height of my iron shots- a blended set of cbx and hybrids just might solve the issues. Would love to try these and see if I can get my 10.1 back to the 5-7 I’m used to.

I’m a 75 year old, recently retired, play in the mid-nineties and Golf is now my full time passion. Currently playing Cleveland forged 588’s with Grafalloy Pfc it series shafts and Cleveland Smart Sole Wedges. Work out, physically, on a Golf specific program and try and practice 60 – 90 minutes at least five times per week, play, team 3 times per week, and on course practice three times per week. Use various training tools and take a lesson about once every other week.
During my wood and iron practice sessions use a swing caddie sc200. While I started playing golf late in life am totally committed to becoming a better player.
As a side I play KZG Woods. Would love to compare the new Launcher HB’s. Appreciate the consideration and hopefully the opportunity.

Just a update – use the Garmin approach 60 on the course. The Swing Caddie keeps Club by club information for that particular practice session. Includes: carry distance; swing speed; ball speed; and smash factor.
Didn’t know how to update my original entry so I hope this will suffice.

The first set of clubs I ever had properly fit to me were Cleveland Launchers. I have used many sets of clubs since that first set but often wish I had the first Cleveland’s in my bag. Like most golfers I still rely on Cleveland wedges. I am now a senior player with a 12 handicap (just on the cusp of scoring lower.)

After playing with a set of hand me down of forged irons, I decided to invest in a set of Cleveland’s to hope for game improvement. The Cleveland’s were amazing and I continue to own them thought I’ve gone through several types of irons. I am still a high handicap playing mostly on the weekends but would like to be considered for a tester of the Cleveland Launchers.

I own the launcher HB irons. I’m unashamedly a high handicapper. These are great clubs. The longer irons are excellent, but the shorter the club the more I prefer my cavity back d200’s. The 4-6 irons on the HBs are a godsend, but the PW seems go to nowhere. Also the standard “stiff” steel shafts feel a lot like a regular shaft for other clubs, presumably to the higher weight of the club head. I can’t wait to read the reviews from other folks on these. I think they’re great clubs to make the game of golf easier for higher handicaps.

I have been curious about these type irons for quite a while now. Being a senior golfer and playing fun golf these days, fun clubs seem like the right thing to game. I don’t need a players club. What I need is a forgiving club that makes this hard game a bit less agitating . :o) I’m thinking Cleveland may have hit a home run with these irons.

Maybe it was time for MyGolfSpy – which I care a lot – with a correspondent or two who could keep the finger on the pulse of European golfing. And maybe also a test or two from this part of the world.

I wonder why that is – don’t the manufacturers think us ‘outsiders’ can play golf??? I’m 68 years young, play off a 12 HC and only play once a week and am a designer of golf accessories to help golfers play better golf……. with an analytical golf mind would have thought I would be the ‘perfect’ candidate……. ah well that is how the cookie crumbles – tell them I like their irons, look like they are design to help…… not too sure about the Launcher HB’s though…. but probably would work. Cheers guys have a good weekend and keep it on the short green stuff…..!!!
