John Daly WITB 2026

We don’t see John Daly as much anymore. But when his bag surfaces, it’s still worth a look. The biggest thing that stands out to me are the hybrids. The man loves those PING G430s and so did amateurs in hybrid testing.

The bag below has 15 clubs and it’s pretty clear from looking at it he chooses which hybrid configuration to leave in the bag when he plays. Here’s a look at the clubs in John Daly’s golf bag.

John Daly WITB 2026

The Sub 70 connection isn’t new

Daly isn’t under contract with Sub 70. He’s said publicly that he doesn’t get paid to play the clubs.

That’s part of what makes this interesting.

He’s chosen to put Sub 70 irons and wedges in the bag because he likes them and they work for him. For a player who has had access to just about every major OEM in the game, that decision stands out.

From a MyGolfSpy testing standpoint, his decision isn’t out of left field. In our testing cycles, Sub 70 irons have shown solid consistency and competitive dispersion numbers, especially relative to price.

Strong loft up top, flexibility in the middle

The driver is 7.5 degrees. That’s Daly, always has been.

The more interesting piece to me is the hybrid setup: four G430 hybrids listed and no long irons. The longest iron he has in the bag is a 6-iron.

That doesn’t mean all four hybrids are in play every round. But if a course demands a specific carry window or landing angle, he can adjust the top end without forcing a long iron into the mix. For a guy who was known as a power player, it’s a move towards forgiveness and consistency.

What changed from previous WITBs

I looked at previous setups from Daly to see what has changed in the last few years.

He moved away from the Sub 70 driver and into the Krank Formula Fire Pro. The 3-wood flipped from TaylorMade to Sub 70. The irons transitioned from 658 CB to 669 MB. He added a 50-degree wedge and changed putter models within Bettinardi.

WITB for JD. probably a carton of cigs, (nasty), a pint of booze and a defibrillator for when his health really takes a turn for the worse.

I’m always somewhat “annoyed” (too strong of a word, but I couldn’t think of a better one) when pros don’t use clubs that they endorse. As a previous commenter noted, Sub 70 has a signature John Daly driver that he’s not using. I’ve also come across several Instagram ads recently where Daly’s promoting Northwestern clubs and what great value they represent (who among us didn’t have some Northwestern clubs when we started out?). This carries over to WITB’s when the clubs represented on the outside of the bag often don’t make it anywhere inside the bag (I’m thinking of Ernie Els and his XXIO endorsement, when he’s not playing a single one of their clubs). OK – that’s my rant for the day! ;-)

First set for me was Northwestern “ Ultimate “ purchased in the late 70’s with caddying money. Blades of course no cavity back around. Their factory was right here in Chicago

Sub 70 does offer a Jon Daly edition driver, the 859 JD, so he probably gets some money from them. It is a little odd that they have a JD driver, and he doesn’t play it.

He’s an endlessly interesting guy to me. A man of immense hitting power and raw talent, but unfortunately has had a lot of personal struggles. Even with his wins, I still think of him as a “what if?” in pro golf. I wish him well in his health struggles, too.

Yeah I wondered this too. Maybe he got some money in a single payout, but he isn’t under contract and doesn’t get any recurring money, hence why he can say isn’t under contract and doesn’t get paid to play them. Or he was paid to play them for X months, and that’s over. 🤷‍♂️
