I Tried Bryson Dechambeau’s Golf Shoes (Well, Sorta)

Reebok is riding the shmedium sleeves of bulked-up Bryson “Biceps” Dechambeau to a successful return to the golf course. The brawny bomber has been rocking their gear for a little bit now, including the all-new Nano Golf.

I’ve often been told by coworkers that I resemble Dechambeau, (minus the cankles…. he wishes), so it’s only right that I give his golf shoes a proper test.

Before we dive right in, it’s worth noting that Dechambeau wears a custom pair, complete with spikes. The retail pair is spikeless, so take that for what it is.

Let’s dive right in.

Why Nano?

Nano is, at least in this decade, the most successful shoe Reebok has put out. Nano is a CrossFit icon, the shoe worn by some of the fittest athletes in the world.

Which is why it’s the perfect fit for a terrible golfer like myself.

Jokes aside, Nano fits in well with who Dechambeau is as a golfer and athlete …. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was his workout shoe of choice BEFORE signing with ‘Bok.

The Nano has been retooled slightly for the golf course. Spikeless traction lugs in an interesting wave pattern, a more robust cushion and some water-resistance.

Can the most well-known performance CrossFit shoe make a difference on the golf course?

The Tech Specs

  • FlexWeave Upper (stiff, yet comfortable)
  • Floatride foam (uber-bouncy)
  • TPU shank plate
  • Rubber spikeless outsole

What I liked:

Cushion

If you’ve never experienced Floatride before, it’s a must-try. It is one of the more responsive, bouncy foams that I’ve ever worn. If you’re looking for a shoe that adds a little “pep” to your step while you walk the course, the Nano Golf is a solid, solid option.

Will you enjoy playing in the Nano Golf? Depends on your preference. If you’re looking for ooey-gooey pillowy goodness, you won’t find that here. Instead, you’ll find a balance, bouncy and firmer cushion that works well for a good swath of golfers.

Traction

I was pleasantly surprised by how well the traction worked. The wave-like pattern gave me pause at first, but after hitting a few shots in this pair, my worries quickly melted away. It’s one of the better spikeless patterns I’ve tried in a while.

Something about the way they laid it out provides a great multidirectional grip.

Stability

The TPU shank plate provided some much-needed rigidity and torsional support to an otherwise flexible shoe. As a bigger fella myself, having some twist resistance is key to keeping my lower extremities fully intact.

Shoes with rubber soles generally need some extra support, so I’m glad it was included here.

What I didn’t like:

Durability

My biggest complaint with the Nano golf? Durability. It’s my only complaint with the shoe. After only wearing them a few times, the woven upper has started to pill quite a bit, particularly around the tongue and collar.

For a shoe that costs $130, I’d expect better construction. Sure, it’s only cosmetic right now, but who’s to say that the FlexWeave upper won’t rip in other places as well? I don’t know that this pair will last as long as, say, something with a synthetic leather or real leather upper.

Wrapping Up

For $130, there’s a lot to like about Bryson DeChambeau’s new Reebok kicks. No, they aren’t just for the meatheads. The everyday golfer like you and me will get plenty of enjoyment out of this pair, provided you stay out of the brush where the less-than-stellar upper material can take a beating.
