Would You Watch a LIV Versus PGA Tour Ryder Cup?

We’re starting to see pro golfers embrace new formats beyond traditional stroke-play events.

Could a LIV-PGA Tour Ryder Cup-style match be next?

At at time when golf’s TV ratings are struggling and fan apathy is climbing, the pro golf world is desperately searching for answers to re-engage its audience.

Tonight we are getting a PGA Tour versus LIV match called The Showdown as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy take on Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka. You can watch that at 6 p.m. ET on TNT.

In a few weeks, TGL will embark on its inaugural season as a simulator league. Next year, a reimagined version of the old Thanksgiving “Skins Game” is going to be produced by Full Swing producer Chad Mumm.

And, earlier this year, we saw the Creator Classic leading into the Tour Championship, signaling a willingness by the Tour to experiment with YouTube golf.

This is progress—golf has been dying for buzz-worthy formats as the Tour and LIV toil in watered-down 72-hole tournaments struggling to drum up interest.

I am cautiously optimistic that TGL could be a hit, although there are certainly reasons for skepticism (understandably, we’re all a little scarred by golf’s decision-makers). As for silly season one-offs like The Showdown and the Skins Game, I am fully in support of those. They can’t hurt—as long as we aren’t scraping the bottom of the barrel with ideas.

Now a new (but also kind of old) idea is apparently on the table: LIV versus the Tour in a Ryder Cup-style match.

Would this match still hold weight?

The concept of LIV’s 12 best players going up against the Tour’s 12 best has been floated for more than two years.

At the beginning, the idea was more tongue-in-cheek than serious. The two sides were at war so coming together for an event against each other wasn’t exactly on the table. This is back in the period where McIlroy was claiming he “still hates LIV” and public opinion of LIV players like DeChambeau remained sour.

It was a “good guys versus bad guys” vibe. Real animosity. Of course, we would watch that!

As we are about to head into 2025, that animosity has cooled off into numbness. It looks like a deal between the Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is imminent but we’ve been saying that for about 18 months. LIV, which appeared to be on life support after the June 6 framework agreement, now appears to be staying long-term.

But as golf tries to branch out into new formats, it appears there could finally be enough support for a big match between the two leagues. Koepka and DeChambeau signaled as much prior to their match against Scheffler and McIlroy.

“Let’s be real, wouldn’t you want to see a LIV versus PGA Tour Ryder Cup-style thing? That is what it is,” Koepka told reporters on a conference call for The Showdown. “This is growing into a big thing. That’s what will draw the fans.”

However, I’m wondering whether a LIV versus Tour match still holds enough weight for people to care.

I’m feeling conflicted on this one

On one hand, I applaud the desire for these guys to get together against each other in a fun format. You could argue something like this would easily surpass the Presidents Cup, a one-sided affair that struggles to draw an audience.

At least there is a top tier of a dozen LIV guys who could compete against the Tour. The Tour has a way deeper talent pool but LIV has enough world-class dudes to make it competitive. DeChambeau’s involvement would also be a huge boost given how he’s now the most popular active player on the planet.

On the other hand, who is rooting for either of these teams?

In the actual Ryder Cup, it’s the U.S. against the Europeans. It’s pretty obvious why you would root for either side. Think about the Europeans winning at Bethpage next year, spraying champagne all over angry New Yorkers. The thought of that makes my blood boil in a “sports hate” kind of way. I don’t want to see those guys win on American turf.

I don’t get the sense that there are a lot of diehard LIV fans out in the world. Are there people who enjoy going to LIV events like I did this past summer? Absolutely. Are there fans of specific players like DeChambeau? Definitely. But are people going to war for the league? (Other than the bots.) I don’t think so.

And while the Tour had some passionate support back in 2022—the place where “real golf” is played—I don’t think that same support is alive today.

The vast majority of reasonable people are just mad that golf has been spilt. We’re angry at both of these leagues. We’re angry at pro golf as whole.

LIV took some of the Tour’s villains but it doesn’t feel like some of these guys are villains anymore. DeChambeau has worked his way out of that category. I have no memory of Patrick Reed hitting a golf shot in the past 18 months. Dustin Johnson is more worried about spending time on his boat with Paulina. Phil Mickelson is too old and more invested in YouTube golf at this point. Cameron Smith is not even a top 50 player in the world anymore.

And the Tour is brimming with vanilla personalities. I am very impressed watching Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay play golf but I’m not emotionally invested in them as people.

If you asked me who I would want to win the LIV-Tour match, I’m not sure I have a response.

I enjoy watching world-class golfers compete against each other in a match-play format. I would watch. It’s better than not having a match.

But two years ago, I would have been wanting to see the LIV guys get crushed. It would be the “serious golfers” against the “exhibition golfers”—and seeing the serious golfers win would be satisfying.

Now, I’m too numb to genuinely care about the result. I would trade this match for one cohesive global tour in a nanosecond.

I think the ratings for this match would be solid but not spectacular. I’m interested in different formats and this could be a gateway to more creative ideas.

I’m not against it but I’m caught in the middle.

How excited would you be for this match?

You’ve heard enough from me.

What do you think?

Would a LIV versus Tour Ryder Cup draw massive ratings? Would you watch it?

If the match does happen, what kind of format would you like to see? Should it be exactly like the Ryder Cup or would you like to see a reimagined version of it?

Let me know below in the comments.

Absolutely I would watch. It’s a shame just how little of professional golf is match play.

Though what I would rather see the PGA Tour do is let the LIV guys have their tour cards back. If they can meet their PGA Tour 20-tournament minimum, I don’t see why the PGA Tour should care what they’re doing on the other weeks. Nobody is watching LIV anyway, so the PGA Tour is just shooting themselves in the foot by banning the top guys from their fields.

Men’s PGA and LIV Golf is dead to me other than the majors.. Paying Ryder Cup players ended any real interest in that as well… My golf consumption now is primarily Womens golf and select YouTubers, and I’m fine with that…Golf as an entertainment product on TV sucks.. PS “the showdown” last night was just plain awful…..I’d much rather watch a random 4 some of 20 handicappers.

Last night was awful for sure. I would rather see a Pro take an average Joe and play alternate shot. None of these plus handicappers either. Must be at least an 8 or higher handicap. Can you imagine see a Pro pipe one 300+ center cut fairway only to watch Joe hit it fat, shank it, or hit it OB? Or the Pro hit an amazing shot into the green leaving an “easy” 3-footer only to see Joe blow it 8 feet past the cup? I would watch that all day long.

There’s no shortage of talented players to replace anyone that chooses to leave and it’s my belief there are plenty that have both talent and character.

Some of the Aussie guys come home to play but not very often. The Liv players do so that is why Liv has gained support from us here.
In all honesty the whole industry needs to get over themselves and let the players do what they do best, Play Golf. It’s the office boys, Thats you Jay Monohan that have stuffed it up for everyone. The Ryder Cup style event would be great on the other hand. Cheers

All it would do is stir back up the animosity between the players. In the Ryder and President’s Cups, they’re playing for national pride…what are they playing for here – Jay Monahan and MBS’ reputation?? I have no problem with a silly season event with a few select players, such as the one tonight in Las Vegas. I miss some of the silly season events from years past (e.g. Skins Game, Shark Shootout, etc.)

LIV was Greg Norman’s vengeance on the PGA and Finchem for shooting down his proposal to have a champions competition and then instituting one itself. He’s still in the sandbox pouting. I don’t begrudge anyone the right to support his or her family; but how much is enough? Rahm, Koepka, Johnson, Mickelson, et. al. were all millionaires before leaving! They elevated on the Tour and then bailed. Loyalty? Appreciation? Nothing better than 18 being the finishing hole and the tension or excitement. Nick Taylor Canadian Open, for example. To quote George Washington: “Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder.” Myself, I prefer the scrappy, sports-loving women in the LPGA and WNBA. ‘Nuf said.

My take on those who jumped to that “league” for the money are about the same as those who work for organized crime. They justify to themselves that it’s OK because they aren’t the ones doing the crimes, but they support and allow the semblance of legitimacy of those who tend to kill people they find inconvenient.

GREED is all that was. Fine. But don’t ask for the legacy and history of the PGAT on top of that. And if the PGA merges with LIV, then the game of golf and all its history is no more. Absolutely NOT. We already have one too many contrived “Ryder-style” events (the Pres. Cup). You can’t replicate almost 100 yrs of tradition just because some TV executive or Oil Sheikdom wants it. And in any case why would anyone want to legitimize the LIV b.s. by giving them an even bigger platform ?

I agree with Tony re the plethora of made up events) I disagree with many of the other comments. LIV is fine, just a very different format and I am not stuck for 4 hrs watching a tournament. (And the TV focusing on only the few “names”)

PGA vs LIV in a Ryder Cup format would absolutely be compelling. It would be a bridge to reuniting the tours. It would play very much like the original Super Bowl where competing football leagues (NFL / AFL) would play for bragging rights.

LIV was created out of rampant greed and sportswashing. I have no desire to engage with it.
The PGA tour had the high ground but instead of taking the chance to be more inclusive, more eco friendly, and properly charitable the tour and it’s players have just grabbed whatever money they can. So I no longer want to engage with that.
A ‘Ryder Cup’ between the two (or the much mooted unification of the two) would twice as bad as either on their own!

I wouldn’t sell my soul to a killer, ra…., and I’m poor compared to those guys that left the PGA. I wouldn’t work for a company whose boss thinks my mom, wife, sister, or daughter were property.

Certainly a lot of comments. Mostly negative. I just looked at the LIV roster to refresh my brain. A few worthy like Rahm and BDC. You can add Hatton and Neimann. Koepka? DJ? After that a few MIGHT make a Prez Cup like Leishman or C. Smith but the rest are has-been or never was. I think it would be more one-sided than the Prez Cup.

What is actually needed, is LIV vs The Other World Tours Combined.
That means that there would be 2 or 3 PGA Tour players in the World Team, which would include players from the Euro Tour (yes, some LIV member are in the Euro Tour also but they would just play for LIV which would give other Euro Tour players of choice to play in it), Sunshine Tour, Japan Tour, Korea Tour, Australasia Tour.
But when can they do it? It would have to be in December in the Southern Hemisphere, obviously, since the rest of the calendar is sort of a bit busy for the Northern guys, and it is the silly season to do such things

The greed of the Golf OEMs, elite golfers and their Associations (PGA, LPGA, USGA, LIV, etc…) knows no boundaries. It all involves around money. Another format like the TGL seems to prove the cliche; there are the filthy rich and the filthy poor. Most of our Western civilizations are losing their middle classes to the determent of democracy. My grandmother was a sage, wise, hardworking woman, (I am 70 years old) once told a long time ago that “when plumbers wages surpassed those of nurses then values in society were going down the drain.” My wife and I enjoy playing golf but watch little to none of the various half-baked events cooked-up over the last decade. We cannot relate to their concocted versions relative to the game we play. So, this is a long winded NO from the both of us. Lower prices for golf equipment, etc… for the NON- PROFESSIONALS by the Greedy Culprits, which I mentioned in the first sentence of my comments, and I believe that the support for game of golf would grow exponentially. HAVE A NICE DAY!

On one other note. Too much division in this world. Let’s bring them all together. If you disagree, it is ok to find another solution, to enjoy your profession more or another means to increase your earnings. If you in your corporate world had the opportunity to move over to a rival, same product, to increase opportunities you would. Same difference. It is a business and you have to look out for yourself and your family’s future.

Yes. Golf is golf and would be a great match up. PGA commish responsible for the top names and lessers going to the LIV. Guaranteed paydays. Golfers are independent employees and if they do not qualify they do not get paid.
I do understand both opinions but feel there is a place for both. Ratings are down and there is a need to brings more fans to the game. The rounger generation, we are losing. Just remember at one time they were struggling to get people to watch golf and it was a hard sell. Sponsors are getting harder to find. Think folks are tired of all the drama that is attached to the game. Think about the game, why the players are in the business. The money the other leagues are paying tops stars, NFL, NBA, MLB. Those guys get hefty annual salaries and guarantees plus retirement at young ages.

Being a competitive kind of guy, seeing some competition between the rivals would get me engaged again. Remember, back in the 60’s, there were rival football leagues: AFL and NFL. They eventually coalesced into what we have today with the Super Bowl as the end result. I’m not thrilled with the Saudi money, but I miss some of the guys that used to play on the PGA tour. I realize that they ran away for the money, among other reasons, but I would love to see the PGA guys whomp the LIV mavericks.

No, wouldn’t be interested. Note also that the PGA Tour is much deeper than LIV tour. The LIV tour has 3-4 elite players (Rahm, DeChambeau, Koepka, Gooch) but after that you start falling off pretty quickly (especially since many top DP Tour players have PGA Tour cards). Just take a look at datagolf.com rankings. So it’d be pretty one-sided.

Personally, the bickering needs to stop and let’s get back to some semblance of what golf was like a few years ago. I hope sane heads will eventually pervade and I feel with Norman out of the picture there exists a real possibility that all this infighting might be a non factor in the future.

I’m torn on this. I’ll admit that the LIV experience is confusing and not something I want to watch regularly (although I have watched and even have been to one event). At the same time, the PGA experience has gotten very vanilla (thanks to Sean for helping me find the right word for what I feel) and I find that I don’t watch it very much either. The days of Sheffler, Johnson, McIlroy, DeChambeau, Koepka, Mickelson, Tiger and other “big” names competing against one another seem to be gone forever. I look at the leaderboard of the Tour events and I find that I don’t know anyone in the top 10. It’s hard to be excited about the events of either now.

If nothing else, a one-time event that pits the best of the two tours against one another would be something I would watch even if it’s only for nostalgia reasons. Once that happened, we could all determine if this event would draw us back for another try.
