Q: What’s the most shocking thing you’ve seen inside of a golf ball?

Good question. We’ve seen some pretty crazy things. So when we first started testing golf balls and started cutting them open to see what was on the inside, it was shocking.

When you bought a dozen golf balls, the assumption was that all the golf balls were the same.

We found things like ground up rubber tires inside of golf balls. We found steel wires inside of a golf ball. Incredibly off center cores, and just bad quality control from ball to ball.

Most people don’t know this, but there were companies just copying golf balls from the manufacturer and just stamping a different logo on it.

We found golf ball boxes where you bought a dozen and there were three or four different cores of the ball. Um, we found manufacturers that were all identical, meaning you bought four or five different balls with a different logo on it, but on the inside they were the exact same ball.

Golf balls have gotten a lot better, but we still find the occasional bad ball, which is why we put golf balls through their paces in our comprehensive Ball Lab.

How about doing some more Ball Labs? It’s been months since the last one, and there have only been about a handful all year. There are too many new balls from the major OEMs announced this year that need to go through the Ball Lab.

I’d much rather see a bunch more ball lab tests instead of the every-other-day-$80 Polo & $110 shorts articles.

Base on the number of clothing articles lately, MGS seemingly cares more about what you’re wearing vs what equipment you’re playing. I couldn’t care less about the pricey clothing articles, none of them will help me lower my index.

The old rubber wound balata balls were fun to unravel when you his a shot so poorly you cut right through the cover or if you happened be be near the practice range when Andy Bean bit the cover off of a ball after a bet between Lee Trevino and a spectator (true story).

My brother and I used to put them in the vice and cut them open with a hacksaw.

My dad was not really impressed with this level of curiosity.

I thought i was the only kid doing that…..rubber bands popping out…..some of them had some kind of liquid in them as well

I used to do the same thing but with my Boy Scout knife. It was amazing watching the ball spontaneously unravel. One cut and a dozen rubber bands would snap and if you were lucky, another dozed would join in the carnage. It was a chain reaction. In some cases the ball just laid there, but if you cut deep enough it would be quite energetic. The goal – to get to the tiny hard rubber ball in the middle. It would be about 1/2″ in diameter and was super bouncy.

That was truly an amazing sight to see. It just kept going on and on, like there was something “living” inside!
I wonder where all those ball winding machines have gone? Must have been loads of them, and they had to be pretty sophisticated mechanically. Probably more so than the molding machines that make the balls today. I can just imagine MGS testing those wound balls today for roundness, compression, etc.

I remember when I got my first job and bought a box of Titleist Tour Balata 90’s because I “had money.” I played a round with my Dad, and after I lost 3, cut 2, and scuffed 3 others – he asked me if I realized that I would have to work a full day just to replace them.

Top Flite XL2000’s were just fine for me after that.

MGS has done more to improve golf balls, since starting these lab tests, than some manufacturers (looking at you, Callaway) had done for themselves in the previous 10 years.

I wish you would have identified the balls that were manufactured so poorly. The headline encourages a further read but no content.
