I Own 75 Pairs of Golf Shoes. I Can’t Stop Reaching For These

Yes, that number is accurate.

And, yes, it’s (mostly) a blessing. But, sometimes, a curse.

Because no matter how hard I try, each time I get rid of a pair it feels like three more pairs spawn in its place.

I’m not complaining. But my wife sure is. And she’ll hold it over my head like a ACME-branded anvil for the rest of time.

Here’s the thing. My job over the last four years, among other things, has been to wear, test and write about golf shoes. It’s not uncommon for me to bring two or three pairs each time I play and play a few holes in each.

The only downside is that very rarely do I get to wear what I really want to wear. Because there’s always something new to try, something different to test.

As I said, a blessing and a curse. And, yes, I acknowledge that my “problem” is indeed someone else’s dream. I’m not complaining.

What I am saying is that when I do get a chance to play golf that isn’t really part of work or my job, I’ve noticed that I keep going back to one pair.

No matter how many pairs I collect, test and give away, the one that I find myself wearing over and over again is the adidas MC80.

To me, it’s the perfect golf shoe.

I’ll say that again, with a little more emphasis on the first part.

To me, it’s the pefect golf shoe.

Not for you. Not for the masses.

It’s somewhere between good and very good in that regard, according to our Most Wanted testing.

A year ago, I would have answered differently.

But as the saying goes, “absence makes the heart grow fonder” and my time away from the MC80 and subsequent reunion over the past few months has reminded me just how joyous a golf shoe can feel.

It’s got a tumbled leather upper. A full-length BOOST midsole. Classic styling that can be dressed up or dressed down.

They were just as comfortable last week when I was out burying a few birdie putts as they were three years ago when I walked Royal Dornoch in the howling winds.

And when this pair finally gives up the ghost, I’ll give them the old 21-putt salute and pillage the bargain bins for another.
