Whether you call it rain gear or waterproofs, it’s likely an oft-overlooked item in your golfing arsenal. Whether you’re in the middle of a round with friends, in a tournament or on a bucket-list golf adventure, the last thing you want is to be unprepared for inclement weather.
As with most things, top-tier is expensive. When it comes to price, you’re paying for research and development, testing and high-performance fabrics. While more expensive initially, premium products tend to last longer and save you money in the long run. The performance and fit of less expensive garments will often render the user wet, cold and miserable.
Good rain gear should be waterproof, windproof, breathable, durable, quiet and fit well. We tested a bunch so you could choose the right product for you and your budget.

Other top performers
There is a vast variety of rain gear to choose from so narrowing it down to the top few performers in this year’s best rain gear of 2024 was a tall task. That said, there is still plenty of rain gear outside of our top five that deserve recognition and may suit you just as well.
While most rain gear has pants that complement their respective jackets, there is no reason you cannot mix and match to your liking. A perennial favorite and this year’s best rain pants are the KJUS Dexter II 2.5L Pants. The featherweight, packable Dexter II 2.5L with extra-long side zippers make them easy to slip on when the need arises.
Buying rain gear can be difficult because of the wide gap between the best and the worst. We’ve narrowed it down to the most important features to make your decision as easy as can be.
Not only do we want to make it easy but we want you to get what you pay for. Rain gear is one of those items with variations in performance of waterproofing, breathability, comfort and fit. Our recommendation is to buy the absolute best your budget allows for.
Here’s what you should look for when you’re exploring your rain gear options.
Waterproofing
“Water-resistant” is not “waterproof”! When considering a waterproof garment, look for sealed/taped seams, fabrics treated with durable water repellent (DWR), coated zippers and/or zipper covers and design features/fit meant to deter water entry.
Breathability in waterproofs is literally a game-changer. REI experts state breathability is to “provide an escape route for perspiration vapor to keep clothing dry and to help you maintain a comfortable body temperature during exertion in any conditions.” The worst suits in terms of breathability feel like wearing a black trash can liner.
While many refer to GORE-TEX when talking about waterproof/breathable (WPB) fabrics, be mindful that there are dozens of other WPB textiles. These WPB membranes not only block rain but help evaporating sweat move from through them. During exertion and without this transfer of moisture from inside to outside, you’re likely to get soaked from the inside.
Comfort is a multi-faceted element that takes into account environmental, physical and perceptual factors. These factors alone don’t fully contribute to a person’s level of discomfort. One must also take into account fit, feel, design, etc., in their evaluation of comfort.
While playing in the rain, your rain gear cannot hinder your ability to play. Top performers feel as though there is almost nothing there. During the swing or while walking, there is nothing like the “swishing” sound of some suits to remind you of its presence and to contribute to auditory distraction.
Fit often takes a backseat to a rain suit’s waterproof and breathable properties. While most would be satisfied with just being dry, you don’t have to give up fit for the sake of staying dry.
Waterproofs generally are worn over other clothes so, adjustability and tailoring cannot be overlooked. When evaluating a particular piece, ask yourself a few questions. How well do the pants fit around the ankle, legs and midsection? Can the jacket’s neck opening, midsection, cuffs, etc., be adjusted?
Rain gear is tested by our expert staff in our state-of-the-art facility and on the course. It undergoes a series of rigorous tests using strict protocols to ensure each one meets our standard before receiving a final score.
Rain gear is scored based on the following criteria:
Waterproofing: Since the goal of rain gear is to keep water out, we have deemed waterproofing to be the most important metric. Suits are evaluated to see how easily water seeps in or if water beads off easily. Furthermore, the design is examined to see if tapering around the wrist, ankles and neck keep water out of the suit. A properly designed neck and wrist cuffs help keep rain from wicking through the openings.
Breathability: According to industry experts, breathability is far more important than most realize. WPB fabrics and vent-like technology, help move moisture and heat from the inside of the suit to the outside. During the swing and under exertion, waterproofs are explored to see how effectively they keep you dry and cool.
Comfort: Questioning for the this category was done while walking and swinging . Score is based upon flaws noted in the suit’s design or construction that hindered the golfer’s ability to play.
Fit: Poorly fitting rain gear will hang on you and affect your ability to swing. Rain gear is ranked on its adjustability in regards to neck, waist and wrist openings. Furthermore, how well pants taper around the ankle, legs and midsection were examined. The best-fitting rain gear not only assists with keeping rain out but doesn’t constantly remind you that you’re wearing it.
Rain gear tips and tricks
Dry your rain gear thoroughly after use. Don’t just roll it up and stuff it back into the bottom of your golf bag unless you like mold and that musty smell the next time you need it.
Learn how to reactivate and/or renew your gear’s durable water-repellent (DWR) finish. Waterlogged outer shells will negatively affect the performance of your waterproof/breathable membrane leading you to believe the gear is not working properly.
Anticipating rain and cooler temperatures on your next golf outing? Avoid cotton clothing as it retains moisture and will leave you feeling cold and uncomfortable.
Golf rain gear comes in many forms. Many companies will offer vests, short-sleeved or quarter-zip options in addition to the standard full-zip jacket. While not for everyone, there are jackets with an optional hood for added protection. Finding the best golf rain jacket for you may depend on some of these options.
Golf rain gear is not only jackets and pants. Golfers who often play in the rain should consider waterproof golf bags, rain gloves and look at our guide for the best golf umbrella to complement your existing rain gear.
You’ve bought the finest rain gear to keep you dry so complement it with appropriate waterproof footwear.
Consider the pockets in your rain gear. Some offer zippered waterproof pockets to keep your essentials dry.
Best rain gear of 2024 – Four key findings
1. Not all rain gear is created equal.
For the most part, proper rain gear will shed water. However, some manufacturers take design and function to the next level. When in the market for new rain gear, some things to look for include adjustable drawstring neck and bottom hems, wrist closures that adjust or fit snugly, tailored fit, waterproof/breathable fabrics, etc.
2. Price points vary significantly.
We get it. Top-quality rain gear is expensive but so is the $600-plus driver you just had to have to replace the one you bought last year. Buy quality rain gear once and you can use it on and off the course. Rain gear doesn’t have to be relegated to your golf bag.
Are you on a budget and looking for a set of rain pants to use in cool, windy and rainy conditions? The FootJoy DryJoys Tour LTS Rain Pants are designed to deliver. Their waterproof, breathable protection is there to get you through your round and into the clubhouse.
Rain gear/waterproofs have traditionally come in sizes of small , medium, large, extra-large and XXL. Some companies, however, now offer pants and jackets in various waist sizes, leg lengths and chest sizes for a more tailored, custom fit. Now there’s no need for ill-fitting rain gear that won’t keep you dry and will affect your swing.
4. Waterproof and breathable fabrics abound.
Although GORE-TEX is often used to describe all waterproof/breathable (WPB) fabrics, be mindful that there are dozens of other membranes with similar properties and performance that go by different trade names. Don’t shy away from a comfortable, well-fitting suit just because it doesn’t have GORE-TEX on the label.
Best rain gear: FAQs
Are rain gear and/or waterproofs maintenance free?
No. Periodic care is necessary to maintain peak performance. The build-up of dirt and oils can reduce the effectiveness of a garment’s durable water repellent (DWR) performance. Follow the care instructions that came with the garment and/or from the manufacturer’s website to maintain peak performance.
How do I know if my rain gear’s durable water repellent (DWR) is still working properly?
According to GORE-TEX, “To test your jacket’s DWR, sprinkle on some water. If the water beads up, your DWR is in good shape. If the water soaks in and obvious darker areas appear, it is time to restore your DWR. Be sure to test your jacket all over, as soaking can occur from any breach.”
Is the best waterproof rain gear only made with GORE-TEX?
No. GORE-TEX is the trade name of a membrane designed to be windproof, waterproof and breathable that was introduced in the ’70’s. It and dozens of other membranes with similar properties have evolved and/or been developed since then that are designed to keep you dry and comfortable.
Is rain gear only made for men?
Some companies recognize the differences in women’s sizes and style preferences and make rain gear accordingly.

Tee Shots Falling Short? 8 Tips to Fix The Problem
Why do you guys always review products that the average golfer would never buy because they are way too expensive. There are a lot of good brands out there Puma , Under Armour that have gold rain jackets at less that half.
Lol. Several hundred $ for a rain jacket. In addition to being ridiculously, extortionately expensive, it would be totally wasted on me: if it starts raining, I go home.
For the price of the top jacket, I was able to buy Galway Bay top-spec Jacket, pants, and a base layer shirt. They often have sales, and I would recommend getting on their email list to take advantage of them.
I played the plantation course on Maui it cost me close to five bills. It rained three times during the round and I’m telling you no mater what rain gear you would have had on when it rains sideways it’s not going to help. That’s just life!
I hope the tour pros and CEOs read this because they’re the only ones who would afford a budget option rain jacket at 300 per or 550 for the top pick. It’s nice getting gear for free so the general public can pick up the tab via overpriced offerings. Lmao. Come down from the clouds boys and girls.
I have had Sunice rain gear for over 10 years and it still looks and performs great. The Zephal fabric is very water repellent, the fit is trim but fits over my other clothing including a 1/4 zip layer, and their products are more reasonably priced. I just bought a short sleeve jacket for use in Florida. Could not be happier with their rain gear.
How about renaming the article: The Best Rain Gear Most Golfers will Never Consider.
Most of us want a basic rain suit if we’re caught in rain storm. Not looking for expensive designer rainwear.
Sure, the golf jackets you reviewed were terrific, and if I were a member of Augusta, the Country Club, Pine Valley, or some swanky club, I’d definitely buy one.
Unfortunately, I’m like most golfers who have memberships at “working man’s clubs” or play day golf.
An article on the Best Affordable Rain Suits $100 – 250 would be more useful for most of the MGS readers.
